Meet Our Staff: Lisa Oliver

Lisa Oliver is the latest addition to the Good Earth Plant Company team of Eco-Warriors. Talk about a career change: Lisa has gone from pavement to plants! She spent 12 years working in the parking industry, providing hospitality industry and residential services. This included special events like Comic-Con and the All-Star Game.
Lisa is a self-taught green thumb who loves plants. A client told her about an opening for a technician at Good Earth, and now she is putting her horticultural skills together with her customer service talent for our clients.
A native San Diegan and alumna of Mt. Miguel High, Lisa lives in Lemon Grove with her three teenage children, but says she spends more time with her dogs because they're always on the go.

When she's not at work. Lisa loves to bake. Her specialties: apple pie and her Thanksgiving stuffing. Yum! Her all-time favorite: custom made Sesame Street character cupcakes.

Letter from the President: It's All Thanks to You
Jim Mumford

I'm still processing my amazement over officially celebrating the 40th anniversary of Good Earth Plant Company on November 1.

On the anniversary date, our company Facebook page featured a photo every hour from our historic archives, and I wrote a blog post with highlights from our history as I remember them.

Of course the minute it was published, I thought of so many MORE milestones: becoming an ambassador for our industry, finding my voice as a public speaker and advocate, so many memorable conferences, projects all over the United States, even a trip to Amsterdam for training on a new living wall system.

I was blown away by all the well-wishes and the positive reaction to our look back. Thank you for making it a fun day.

I spent the day with my new partners making a presentation for a potential new business venture which will send us off into an exciting new direction. No time for champagne, we're already working hard on the next 40 years!

Our anniversary date shares a month with the Thanksgiving holiday. It reminds me despite the ups and downs any of us have in business or personally, overall I have so much to be thankful for and so many people who deserve thanks for helping make our success possible. If you are reading this, count yourself as one of them.

Team Real or Team Fake: Which Christmas Tree Is Best?

tree_in_cart.jpg The San Diego Press Club gave our blog post "Team Real or Team Fake: The Great Christmas Tree Smackdown is Back" Second Place for Public Service/Consumer Story at its annual Journalism Awards Competition on October 24. We won in head to head competition with professional journalists. We're happy the judges found our information useful.

It can be a tough decision whether an artificial tree is better than a cut living tree, or vice versa. We present the pros and cons, and then it's up to you and your circumstances.

Read our advice here, and happy tree shopping!

Featured Project: Johnson & Jennings Moss Logo
The formula for a cool moss wall display at your business or organization:

1. Start with a plain black wall.
2. Add styrofoam.
3. Add moss in several layers.
4. Add faux plants.

5. Voila! The logo for Johnson & Jennings General Contractors in San Diego appears. Thanks Johnson & Jennings for bringing us in to create this display, and to our team for bringing it to life.

Get in touch with us at 858-576-9300 if we can create something for you.

Featured Project: American Assets Living Wall

We created a living wall at the Torrey Plaza office complex in Del Mar Heights. It was designed by landscape architect: Brian Frederick of MLASD (David McCullough) working with architect Darrel Fullbright and Diana Ozakcay at Gensler.

GreenScaped Buildings Project Manager Aaron LeGrow and assistant Roman Swank supervised installation. It was done in a day-plus, using plant modules grown for two months. We prefer three months, but we made it work.

The wall consists of 600 individual plants including spider plants, coppertone, crassula radican, crassula argentea, senecio serpens, graptopetalum paraguayensis
and 'Pinwheel' aeonium haworthii.

The client is thrilled with the results and we are, too. American Assets Senior Operations Administrator Cathy Gojuangco told us how happy she is to have this new addition outside their office for everyone to enjoy: "LOVE how the green wall came out in our patio area and look forward to sitting out there and enjoy it ... in my spare time, LOL!" Cathy, you've got to take lunch breaks outside to get your dose of Vitamin N!
