Fern Hill Road gate installation

Flood gates installed on Susbauer and Fern Hill roads
Permanent, manual-locking flood gates have been installed on Susbauer and Fern Hill roads ahead of winter weather to allow for more efficient closure of the roads during high water.
The Susbauer Road gates are south of Hornecker Road and north of Long Road. The Fern Hill Road gates are south of Taylor Way and north of Geiger Road.
Both roads frequently flood during periods of heavy rainfall. Unlike portable barricades, the gates lock in place, preventing motorists from driving into floodwaters. Last February there were two confirmed cases of motorists who moved/drove around barricades and had to be rescued. Forest Grove Fire & Rescue charged each driver $516 for the rescues. Both drivers were also fined $260 for moving/driving around barricades, which is against the law.
Public asked to share flood experiences with Cedar Mill, North Johnson creeks
Property owners impacted by flooding in Cedar Mill Creek/North Johnson Creek watershed are asked to  share information about their experiences through the Cedar Mill Creek Flood Remediation Collaborative website: cedarmillcreek.org.
The   Collaborative  is a partnership of agencies, businesses, organizations and community members who are working together to address flooding in the watershed, which stretches from the West Hills to the Tualatin Hills Nature Park in Beaverton. Gov. Kate Brown designated this effort as an Oregon Solutions project in June.
Homes, businesses, parks and roads are impacted by flooding in the 5,300-acre watershed, especially in lower elevations during heavy rains. The goal of the Collaborative is to improve the natural functions of the Cedar Mill Creek and North Johnson Creek corridors to reduce the flooding impact on flood-prone residential and commercial properties.
Public comments will be accepted on the website through mid-December. Collaborative members will then identify current projects and collaborative and regulatory opportunities before exploring potential funding and governance options. A Declaration of Cooperation - an agreement establishing a roadmap to help reduce flooding impacts over time - is expected to be signed in summer. Implementation is expected to begin in fall.
To find out more about the Cedar Mill Creek Flood Remediation Collaborative, visit cedarmillcreek.org. In addition to the survey, the site includes an interactive map for locating properties within the watershed area.

Snow zones implemented in Washington County
Three areas in Washington County have been designated as " snow zones" - portions of roads where motorists are required by law to have studded tires, traction tires or tire chains on or in vehicles when traveling in severe weather.
The snow zone areas are:
  • 175th Avenue, between Scholls Ferry and Rigert roads
  • Barnes Road, from 118th Avenue east to the County line, adjacent to a city of Portland snow zone
  • Cornell Road, from Cedar Hills Boulevard east to the County line
These areas have high elevations and steep grades. During icy and snowy weather conditions, vehicles without traction devices are more likely to be involved in crashes or have difficulty driving on slick surfaces. One vehicle can easily cause multiple crashes when not equipped for winter-weather travel.
