In Mark 6, after preaching to the multitudes, Jesus was told that the people were hungry and His response was, "You give them something to eat". In Matthew 25, Jesus tells us that when we take care of the needs of the least, then we have done it for Him. Scripture instructs us to help those in need. It is important that we put our faith into practice in concrete ways. Anyone in need deserves our compassion, if for no other reason than the Lord being compassionate to us. God blesses us so we can help others. True faith in Christ will result in good deeds.

I am so grateful for all of the volunteers that step-up each year to make Operation Turkey happen. For the 23rd year in a row, members of Saxe Gotha have come together to provide Thanksgiving Day meals to people in our community that might not otherwise have a nice meal that day. During the fall of 2017, I estimate that there has been around 200 people that have worked together to make this ministry a success. Many of you have gathered together in groups to cook turkeys or have cooked them by yourself at home. Others have come to the church kitchen area to prepare food, put the food on plates and get them ready to be delivered. Some of you will be driving the roads on Thanksgiving morning to deliver the meals to those in need. Your financial gifts have been used to make all of this possible. Through these efforts, over 1325 people will receive a nice meal on Thanksgiving Day. God is working through Operation Turkey to provide meals, but He is also giving His followers a concrete way to serve Him and to build relationships with fellow believers as we work and fellowship together.

I encourage you to be intentionally observant, and you will see God at work in the world around you. Ephesians 1:18 tells us to ask God to open the eyes of our heart so that we may see and understand the things of God and follow in His ways. I urge you to look around you and find tangible ways that you can join God in spreading the message of hope and salvation to all peoples of the world. That hope and salvation can only be found in Jesus Christ. We are created to live each day to glorify God and to encourage others to do the same.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Eve Barker

Operation Turkey needs volunteers willing to be trained to be the leaders of this important missions outreach for 2018. We are looking for people to shadow the current volunteer leaders during our 2017 Operation Turkey event in preparation for leading the 2018 Operation Turkey. We will train you and support you so that you are fully ready for this position. Without strong volunteers, Operation Turkey could not happen. If you have questions, please talk to Eve Barker. If you are interested and willing to give this a try, please email [email protected].
