Winter Principal's Newsletter

Dr. Peter Monaghan, Principal
Glenbard West Community -

November represents the month of gratitude at Glenbard West. Throughout this time, there are many activities involving students and staff designed to highlight gratitude.  I can tell you in all honesty that every day, we are grateful for the students who attend Glenbard West.  The pages of this Newsletter attest to the amazing accomplishments of our Hilltoppers not only within academics but athletics and activities as well.  Last week, our students took a moment to write "Thank You" letters to the teachers and support staff of Glenbard West.  This is a great way to inject some energy into the school as we round mid-November.  For our seniors applying for college, many of them are grateful to the teachers and counselors who have written recommendation letters for them. Incredible as it sounds, this year our teachers wrote 545 letters of recommendation in total while our counselors (there are 8 at West) wrote 242.  That is a total of 787 recommendation letters.  To me, this is just one example of the commitment and dedication of our educators.  I feel lucky to be among them.

Something else that I am grateful for is the Glenbard Parent Series that District 87 sponsors with the help of Student and Community Projects Coordinator, Gilda Ross. Just this past week, Jessica Lahey, author of The Gift of Failure spoke here in the auditorium at Glenbard West.  Those of you who were there heard Ms. Lahey talk about the important role that "failure" plays in the development of our young people.  I know that the word itself feels like the antithesis to everything we stand for as a school.  However, the message for teachers, parents and students is a crucial one. Lahey spoke about the importance of building competence within our young people and how so much of that means that as parents we need to let go just a little bit.  I could have used her advice when my own kids were in high school! Those of you who have experienced our Glenbard Parent Series know that these experts have great insights for educators and parents alike.  Lahey reminds us that the final destination of our young people is independence - be it at college, the workplace or adulthood in general. You can check out her webpage here.

As we move into the holiday season, I hope that all of us can appreciate how lucky we are to be in the Glenbard West community.  Thanks so much for the support you give us.

The AP Studio Art students were invited by Glen Ellyn heARTfelt Gallery owner, Lucy Dallman, to participate in an art show entitled "Community" at her studio on Main Street. Each of the 19 students chose a "staple" in the downtown Glen Ellyn community from which to be inspired.  These included The Glen Arts Theatre, Lake Ellyn, Stacy's Tavern, and of course Glenbard West among others.  Each student artist invited a representative from their point of inspiration to the opening.  As a result, the show was a wonderful success, attended by many members of the community who don't usually see our student's artwork.  By the shows conclusion, 70% of the artworks sold with proceeds not only going to the heARTfelt Gallery and the student artist, but also to The Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center.  Student artists were: Kellyn Powers, Esmeralda Olivares, Mica Castaldo, Sebastian Pratt, Maria Spengel, Sophie Schaffer, Grace Kneifel, Lauren Pones, David Schumacher, Kristin Graham, Morgan Vergo, Emily Pones, Eileen Billings, Tu Ha, Legnaliz Alequin, Bryn Lilly, Drew Orr, Sophia Bruun and Desiree Gawle.
Glenbard West Theatre is proud to have four students chosen from our program to participate in this year's All-State show, Big Fish.  Brennan Dougherty, Katie Laird, and Robbie Matthew are all part of the All-State cast and Avery Williamson is on the Light Crew. West is one of the only schools in the state to have this many students involved in the All-State production.  Congratulations to this talented group!

News from School Counseling

Seniors - We know you are feeling some relief as the bulk of the college application deadlines have passed.  We empathize with you, using Halloween as some catharsis for the stressful start to the year (see Halloween pic below).  There are still applications being submitted for December and January deadlines, but we've currently had 2,422 applications submitted by 422 students!  Make sure to remind your seniors to send a thank you note to all the teachers that took the extra time to write their letters of recommendation.  We are excited to report we had 190 college reps visit Glenbard West in the Fall to talk to our students!  Just another reminder, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened up in October.  If you haven't done so already, make sure you follow the link on your senior's Naviance account to get the FAFSA completed, not only for consideration of financial aid, but also scholarships from colleges.  Speaking of scholarships, Local Scholarship applications will become available in February on Naviance.  More to follow in subsequent newsletters.

Juniors
- Free SAT test prep is being offered by our District.  To sign up and get more details follow this link - https://goo.gl/forms/VAiLRtKrw4qfEYI32.  There is also free test prep through Khan Academy by logging into your College Board account.  Be sure to follow up on our September presentations by continuing your college research and developing your activity resume in Naviance.  Although the bulk of our college rep visits have taken place, there will be more in the Spring!  Make sure you are checking your Colleges tab on Naviance to sign up for these visits.

Sophomores
- Counselors will be visiting your English classrooms the first week of December to talk about enrolling in your classes next year and reviewing your options.  It is never to early to start talking to your teachers about recommendations for what you should take.  In Spring, we'll be coming to English classes to walk you through a personality test on Naviance and begin exploring some potential careers, college majors, and developing an activity resume.

Freshmen
- If your counselor hasn't met with you already, we will in the upcoming weeks. We're talking about your future plans and coming up with some potential classes you may want to take sophomore year and talking about your goals.  This will all be recorded in Naviance and can be referenced at home when you pick your own classes online through PowerSchool in the Winter.

2018-19 Course Enrollment

Beginning December 4th
School Counseling will begin the course enrollment process for the 2018-19 school year. Students will once again enter their course requests online in the student portal of PowerSchool.  During the week of December 4th, school counselors will visit Sophomore English and Junior U.S. History classes to discuss the online enrollment process and hand out course enrollment forms.  Freshmen met in small groups with their counselor to create their sophomore plan of courses, but you'll still need to transpose them into PowerSchool.

Students will be able to enter their course selections beginning December 4th and have until January 8th.  Students who have an IEP or who receive academic support within the ELL program will have access to view their course selections which will be chosen through a team process.  After the deadline, students will meet individually with their school counselors during the weeks of January 22nd through February 8th.  These dates can be found on the Glenbard West School Counseling public calendar.

The Course Selection Worksheet/Schedule and List of Courses can be reviewed and utilized as a tool to assist students/parents in selecting next year's courses.

For more detailed course descriptions, please refer to the Glenbard West homepage under "Parents" for the "Enrollment Handbook".

It is essential that your student give careful consideration to his/her course choices. Any changes after February 8 must be discussed with the student's school counselor prior to April 27.  Students may not change their mind after April 27.  Parents, we value your input in this process because you best understand your own student's interests and goals. You also see how the overall academic rigor of his or her schedule affects daily functioning.

SAT Test Prep Courses Offered at Glenbard West

As you no doubt are discovering, the junior year is a key year in the college application process.  One of the most important parts of that process is preparing for college entrance exams. Here in the Midwest that means preparing for the SAT. While we work hard to prepare all juniors to succeed on the exam, we are also offering a special test preparation program for Glenbard West juniors who are interested in additional preparation. Your student's SAT score is a critical factor in college admissions. Although the curricula in several junior courses include specific help for students taking the SAT, this program can provide additional opportunities for practice in the areas covered by the exam and build student confidence in test taking skills.

We are offering a free 9-week 87 SAT Prep+ course to juniors at all four of our high schools from January 29 - April 5, 2018. We believe this engaging course will help juniors reach their college and career goals. The classes will mix self-directed work through Khan Academy with practice tests, group collaboration and coaching to help juniors do their best on the April 10th SAT.

In addition to online resources, all participating juniors will receive test prep booklets that can be used for individual and group practice.

Did you know:
This course will give juniors at least 20 hours of Khan Academy support and much more time to improve with classmates and teachers.

We plan to offer three 87 SAT Prep+ sections at all of our schools.

Click here to choose one (1) of the following three course options:

1. Monday & Wednesday 2:45 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. (with snacks). Students can take the 5:45 p.m. activity bus home.

2. Tuesday & Thursday 2:45 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. (with snacks). Students can take the 5:45 p.m. activity bus home.

3. Monday & Wednesday 5:45 p.m. - 8:45 p.m. (with snacks). Students will provide their own transportation.

The course will run 9 weeks: January 29 - April 5. Note: No 87 SAT Prep+ during spring break week.

We encourage juniors interested in reaching their college goals by doing their best on the April 10th SAT to click here to sign up for the free 87 SAT Prep+.  Spots will be available first come, first served. We will notify students of acceptance in early December.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Dr. Rebecca Sulaver or Jamie Wilson at rebecca_sulaver@glenbard.org or jamie_wilson@glenbard.org .

Registering for AP Exams

Taking the Advanced Placement exams is an important part of all AP courses. Glenbard West High School desires that all students take AP exams for the AP classes that they have taken. Scoring well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a significant amount of tuition.  Starting a few years ago, all public Illinois universities and community colleges awarded credit to any student who received a 3 or higher on a 5-point scale.

For the 2018 AP exams, students at Glenbard West High School will be registering online. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access.

This year each AP exam costs $94.00 with exception to AP Seminar and AP Research which costs $142.00 per exam.  Glenbard West High School desires that every student be able to take their AP exams. Students requiring financial assistance should contact Dr. Rebecca Sulaver, rebecca_sulaver@glenbard.org , in the Glenbard West API Office to learn more.

Online Exam registration will begin on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 12:00 a.m. and end on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. In order to register, students should click on the link provided on the school website or visit www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/142075  to register. To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the .pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered.

Glenbard West High School is excited to offer families the convenience of paying exam fees online at the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card or debit card available before beginning registration. Paying online is a great way to make sure that payment has been made while avoiding the lines in the API Office.

Here are the important dates for the registration process:
  • Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 12:00 a.m. - Registration Begins
  • Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. - Registration Ends
Please contact Dr. Rebecca Sulaver, rebecca_sulaver@glenbard.org , if you would like to register for an exam not listed or have any questions.

8th Grade Parent Night

On Tuesday, January 23, 2018, Glenbard West will hold an 8 th Grade Parent Night. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium.  Parents and students will have the opportunity to learn about the curriculum, summer school enrichment opportunities, and the registration and enrollment process.  Please plan on attending this very important and informational evening.  We are excited to meet and welcome the Class of 2022!

Student Services
As we wrap up first semester and begin preparing for final exams, it is a crucial time to remind our students to be self-aware of their stressors and find healthy ways to self-manage these feelings. The West Way theme for December of "Be Mindful" encompasess these skills. In our fast-paced and plugged-in culture, our students need, now more than ever, to learn ways to regulate and cope with everyday stresses.

Signs/Symptoms of Stress
Fight, flight, or freeze response
Rapid heart rate
Increased blood pressure
Tense Muscles
Sharpened senses
Slowed digestion (nausea/irritable bowel symptoms may occur)

So why practice mindfulness?
REDUCED rumination, stress, emotional reactivity
INCREASED working memory, focus, cognitive flexibility, self-control, classroom participation, respect for others, and relationship satisfaction AND students who practice mindfulness before tests, actually perform BETTER!
Other stress reduction activities:
Exercise
Practice Gratitude
Meditate
Deep breathing
Be Present
Unplug
Decompress
Journaling
Talk to a trusted friend/adult
Listen to or play music
Get artistic
Spend time in nature
Use fidgets
In response to what we are hearing from staff, students, and parents regarding stress, we assembled a mindfulness committee at Glenbard West. This team consists of staff and student leaders who are excited to create a space at West where students and staff can take a break, unplug, meditate, and learn what mindfulness can do for our mental and physical health.

The space is located on the 4th floor bridge in the new science wing; a beautiful, bright, and calming environment. We kicked off our new initiative with our first monthly event, a guided meditation and intention setting exercise. The space is also open on Mondays during lunches for people to utilize for "Mindful Mondays".
Freshman Leadership Conference

On November 7th, Glenbard West held the Freshman Leadership Conference.  This event looks to develop and refine the leadership skills of our freshman class.  Freshmen are nominated by staff who recognize their potential for greatness.  Deb and Dana Hult of Core Training are nationally renowned working with hundreds of schools across the United States teaching the power of positive peer relations within school.  Both Deb and Dana designed extremely interactive breakout sessions customized to fit the culture of Glenbard West and focused on the empowering students who make an impact on school and community.  Most students seldom receive formal training in basic leadership skills and our belief is this leadership training will help them become more meaningful and effective. Other breakout sessions are hosted by student leaders from the West Mawi club and teacher/coach Mr. Zander. The conference is a unique experience for students to interact and learn from experts as well as leaders within Glenbard West.

Matter of Pride
Matter of Pride is a recognition award given to students who demonstrate through their
actions, quality character that promotes Glenbard West.  Nominations come from
staff  members as well as individuals within our communities.  Ten nominees are
selected monthly and presented  with certificates and t-shirts.

Glenbard Parent Series provides practical tips, support for parents
As adults, we seek guidance and advice about financial planning, our health and more, but rarely do most adults seek advice about raising their children.

Parenting today is challenging and takes more courage than what was required in the past. We are fortunate to have the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS), which provides a wealth of free resources for parents. GPS shares parenting skills by engaging nationally acclaimed speakers, parents and school staff. Each month, we host free events during the afternoon, evening and on Saturdays. Topics range from teaching young people resilience to preparing for the new SAT to understanding anxiety, depression and addiction to managing stress and more.

In addition to hearing from national speakers, there's real power in networking with other parents at GPS events. These conversations are affirming - they make it normal to discuss challenges raising young people in today's world.

The Glenbard Parent Series is a great mechanism that brings our community together. There are approximately 25,000 students in our four high schools and the schools within our six sender school districts. The Glenbard Parent Series is for all of these families, as well as families who don't live within our boundaries. It's common to meet people from surrounding suburbs at GPS events. We welcome everyone.

I encourage you to attend the powerful Glenbard Parent Series programs offered throughout the year.

Here are just a few of the upcoming free events:
  • Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning: An Approach for Sailing the Rough Seas of Adolescence, Noon Nov. 30 at
Community Consolidated School District 93 Administration Center
  • Children Who Challenge Us: Effective Behavior Management at Home, 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Glenbard North
  • Find Your Future at College Night, 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at Marquardt School District 15 Administrative Center
Also, connect with GPS on Facebook at facebook.com/glenbardparentseries

In addition to the regular monthly programs, the GPS Saturday Series helps parents and students navigate the college application process. Free continental breakfast and childcare are provided. We also offer a GPS Spanish series of programs and events hosted by the Families United for Students Excellence (FUSE) African American Parent Committee, which is co-sponsored by the DuPage County Branch NAACP. Check out the schedule of GPS events at www.glenbardgps.org
