Shopping online Safe(er) Online Shopping

Amazon, FedEx and UPS are bracing for the seasonal deluge as most of us are beginning to whittle down our holiday lists.  With the flurry of extra activity it becomes harder for consumers and retailers alike to keep our accounts secure.

However a little extra effort on our part can help a lot.

- When in doubt, don't click.  It is often difficult to discern legitimate offers from fraudulent ones in ads or emails.  Most major vendors will offer you the same deals when you log into their website with your account.  If not, it is quite possibly a scam.  If you are looking for a vendor, use your search engine, not a hyperlink in an email or a banner add.

- Review your statements often.  Purchase activity on bank and credit card accounts gets higher than usual this time of year.  More activity makes it easier for fraudulent purchases to be overlooked.  Keep an eye on your accounts, review and try to reconcile purchases.  If you notice any questionable activity, follow up with your merchant or financial institution immediately.

- Shop from a secure device.  If you are shopping online, your home is the safest place to do your shopping (not the coffee shop).  StaySafeOnline.org and Webroot remind us to make sure your device and security software is up to date before shopping, to be wary of public hot spots such as coffee shops and hotels, and to be wary of shopping from a tablet or phone. (Tablets and phones are exposed to many more networks than your home system since we carry our devices everywhere.)

- Use a reputable merchant.  If you are not using a well-known merchant like Amazon, take a few minutes to review the site and make sure it is not a scam.  The article here has good advice for recognizing a trustworthy vendor.

- Use an isolated email account.  When shopping online, use an email address that is not linked to your financial institutions or other legitimate accounts.  This makes it harder for criminals to use Social Engineering to gain access to your main accounts.  (I use a separate Gmail account for shopping.  It is free and Gmail will auto-forward anything I ask it to.)

- Think before responding to follow-up communication.  If you are contacted for follow-up information remember that it might be a phishing scam.  If you think you need to respond, look the business up on Google, go directly to the website and log in.  Do not use contact information provided in the email you received.

- Do not give out personal information until you are totally certain you know who you are responding to.  Never give out more personal information than required.

- Use traceable, protected payment options - a credit card is the safest way to shop online.  It does not give thieves potential access to your bank account and credit cards have the most protection for shoppers.

Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season!!!

Everyone  on  Your List

For Stockings

For the fashion conscious giftee on your list. This is a stylish leather tassel with a hidden iPhone/iPad charging cable. The tassel can be attached to a handbag or keyring so you always have a charging cable with you.

Speaking of phone chargers, check out these festive LED Christmas light charger cables.

My headphones are always getting tangled in the bottom of my work bag. For the music enthusiast or podcast listener in your life, an earphone organizer might be a really useful and inexpensive gift.

For Kids
Give your kids an intro to learning how circuits and electricity work with a fun board game. The goal is to arrange the pieces to form a path and light up the beacons on the challenge card.

This toy won the 2016 award for Innovative Toy of the Year. The MeccaNoid is a personal robot that your child can build, program and play with. When assembled, the robot is 4 feet tall and has thousands of pre-programmed phrases and voice recognition.

Kids can create their own clothing designs and share with an app. The kit comes with a 62-page design book, colored pencils, markers and a case. Complete challenges, earn rewards and unlock new features in the app.

For Teens

Teens are notoriously sleepy and sometimes hard to get out of bed in the morning. Try Clocky, an alarm clock that rolls away from you as the alarm goes off and continues to beep until caught, forcing the user to get out of bed to turn off the alarm. Clocky can also jump from a 3-foot tall nightstand.

For Adults

Electric toothbrushes have been around for a while, but this Bluetooth brush is able to connect with a smartphone app to give you feedback on your brushing habits, like if you are brushing too hard. It also tracks when you brush and motivates you with achievements you can earn within the app by brushing frequently.

By lighting this camp stove, the heat generates a small amount of electricity, which allows you to charge or power a USB device. A rechargeable battery stores excess energy for charging things later.

From their website, "This smart shower head lights up the water spray with different colors depending on the amount of water used," changing from green to red when you are using beyond 10.5 gallons. Of course, no smart device would be complete without its own app to adjust the colors, threshold, and monitor how much money you are saving by conserving water.

If there is one downside to being able to take and store endless photos on our smartphones, it is the hassle of having to get to a computer or store and print them out. The Fujifilm Instax camera is great for those who want to have a hard copy of a photo, instantly, without the fuss. Just like a digital version of the old Polaroid cameras that were once quite popular.

The air tends to be quite dry in the wintertime, leaving many of us with stuffy noses or dry skin. Humidifiers can be an essential item to have on hand, and this USB model allows you to take it on the go, use at your computer or even in your car.

For Pets

Load the Furbo with dog treats and use an app on your smartphone to have the Furbo release a treat. The device also has a barking sensor to alert you via the app when it senses your dog barking. The app allows you to transmit your voice through the Furbo's built in speakers.
