A Note From Pastor Jen
Thanksgiving this week just like every year is celebrated with families of all walks of life coming together around a meal. Joining around a table to give thanks and honor each other.
Thanksgiving is also probably the most misunderstood and shared stories in our US history. From a very young age we are taught about this nation's first thanksgiving being about "Pilgrims and Indians" working together and helping one another to survive the winter, which they were blessed with the immense amounts of chow, sharing farming tips and working together. The Pilgrims plowed the fields and harvested the crops, it ended up being a great first year. After all of that work, the Pilgrims invited the Indians to join them; this was the start as we know of a new tradition. We now celebrate having a beautiful feast filled with corn and turkey a plenty to go around. This is the narrative we have taught or maybe fooled ourselves into believing this is the only "totally historically accurate" account as one resource claimed
God challenges us to grow in our capacity to better understand one another's truth and guides us to change for the better. So, this year we take a step to educate ourselves, to be open to hearing another story, that of our Native siblings - the Original inhabitants of this land.
Did you know? Indigenous people have been completely restoried or cut out entirely of our shared US history. You see, it was actually
Abraham Lincoln who used the theme of "Pilgrims and Indians" eating happily together. He was trying to calm things down during the Civil War when people were divided. It was like a nice unity story. It's kind of genius, in a way, to get people to sit down and eat dinner together. We know this that food is an excellent way to bring down tensions and barriers.
This thanksgiving, we invite you to join us at 6:00pm in the Upper Commons for a conversation, an opportunity for us to consider and learn about one another.
Did you know?
In August of 2016 at the Churchwide Assembly, members of the ELCA passed a resolution to recognize and celebrate contributions of Native American/Alaska Natives into the life of the church and community and to reject explicitly and clearly the European-derived doctrine of discovery. The ELCA offers a statement of repentance and reconciliation to Native Nations in this country for damage done in the name of Christianity. The ELCA also affirms that this Church will eliminate the Doctrine of Discovery from its contemporary rhetoric and programs, to practice accompaniment with Native peoples instead of a missionary endeavor to them, allowing partnerships to mutually enrich Indigenous communities and ministries of the ELCA.
Come be in conversation.
Let us work together to understand why it is so important for us NOT to keep following the Doctrine of Discovery- the "Pilgrim and Indian" story of our first thanksgiving as mainstream media and schools teach. Let it also be a goal to not just meet the task at hand in word but also in deed.

On Saturday, December 2, Mattson Funeral Home & Creamation Service will be hosting a Service of Remembrance.This service is dedicated to honoring the memories of the loved ones who have died over this past year. During the service, your family will be invited to stand as your loved one's name is remembered. Each family will receive a memorial ornament bearing the name of your loved one. Christmas Festival

Every child is invited to join us in our annual Christmas Festival. The kids will be a part of an ensemble in the Children's Choir. We will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, November 8 during Faith Formation.

Adult volunteers are needed as Festival Guides and in between services. All children are expected to be at both services on the 17th. Road Trip to Atlanta!

Our congregations are engaging more and more in the difficult and necessary conversations about race, privilege and justice.
At the outset of 2018, a cohort of young adults from the synod are invited into deep learning together around these important topics. The cohort will invite participants to read & view media about racial justice and privilege in America, including foundational writings of black theology, contemporary films and essays from a variety of perspectives. The cohort culminates in a trip to Atlanta where we will meet with local faith and nonprofit leaders, visit landmarks of the civil rights movement, share communal meals, and wrestle with what it means to live in this time, and reflect on how God is calling us to work for racial justice.

Family Christmas Caroling - All Ages

Join us on December 3 from 11:45am to 3pm, lunch included. We will grab some lunch, warm up our voices and carpool over to Birchwood in Forest Lake and Ecumen Parmly in Lindstrom. We will carol around the facilities, offering joy, peace and love. All are welcome, parents must accompany children under the age of 10. Adults will be needed to help with carpooling. Cookie Baking Fundraiser

Sunday, December 17 before and after the Christmas Festival the Hosanna Youth will be hosting a cookie sale. All proceeds benefit the Youth Gathering Trip taking place this summer. You're invited to whip up your own dough, which yields 2-3 dozen cookies, to be rolled out, cut, baked and decorated by our Youth. We also accept pre-baked cookies as well!
