Observations from Seattle, Jeff Marcell on the Future of Amazon and the Economic Disruption of Online Retail
Without a doubt, the biggest buzz in economic development this fall is the Amazon HQ2 search. Yet, before Amazon made headlines with its landscape-altering public request for proposals, the company was making headlines as a disruptor in many other ways. Just a few weeks prior to Amazon’s HQ2 RFP announcement, Jeff Marcell was preparing to speak at TEDC’s Annual Conference in Houston, Texas. His topic? Online retail. Specifically, the upstream changes in the industry and opportunities for business recruitment, retention, and expansion. As one of the leaders reshaping the world of retail, Amazon was an obvious choice to illustrate these issues. While the HQ2 process may temporarily overshadow other conversations about Amazon, the company’s long-term impact on the retail industry and the economic development profession’s response will continue to be important discussions. Jeff is working to expand his analysis of online retail for future presentations. If the topic aligns with an upcoming event in your region, let us know how TIP can bring the discussion to you.

Client Communities Selected for Microsoft TechSpark

We are excited by the news that two recent TIP clients have been selected as Microsoft TechSpark communities. TechSpark is a national initiative announced in October 2017 that will partner Microsoft employees with leaders in six communities--one each in North Dakota, Wisconsin, Texas, Virgina, Washington, and Wyoming-- to understand how technology can help address critical economic challenges in smaller, less densely populated areas.

Fargo was the first to receive this designation. TechSpark aims to drive economic development in North Dakota by providing a statewide broadband network and establishing more high school computer science programs. Microsoft has also partnered with North Dakota State University’s 4-H Youth Development program.

The Green Bay Packers recently partnered with Microsoft as part of the Northeast Wisconsin TechSpark location. Click here to learn more about the recently announced TitletownTech initiative, which will house the TechSpark program in Green Bay.

North Louisiana Economic Partnership Recognized

Hats off the to the North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP) for receiving the Louisiana Association of Business & Industry 2017 Economic Development Partner of the Year Award. The award is intended to recognize “an economic development or business organization that demonstrates significant impact and outreach to the broader community, unique competitive advantages, and comprehensive plans for the next five or ten years.”

In 2014, NLEP adopted their five-year strategic plan, developed with the assistance of TIP Strategies. Since that time, the organization has worked diligently to fulfill that plan. In the press release announcing the award, NLEP Board Chair Jerry Allen states that it, “validates the work that NLEP has done developing and implementing a regional economic development strategic plan, developing certified sites in our region, establishing a nationally recognized workforce program, and becoming more engaged in economic development public policy.” Congratulations NLEP!
