What happened to Winter? We've been running our air conditioner on full blast, just so we can feel some cold air! But, no complaining ....when it comes to weather, you just have to take it as it comes. Enjoy this awesome "Florida" winter. Next year could be a totally different story.
The sap is rising in the trees and pushing out leaves 21 days early, according to
Daily Spring Index Leaf Anomaly. There's a scientific study for everything these days!
This means we'll likely be bringing in flowering plants earlier this year. So get out there in this beautiful weather, and get your beds and containers ready!

Ask Zach
It looks like something has chewed around the hole of my Nest Box. What's going on?
- It's probable that Gray Squirrels or Flying Squirrels have made their home in your Nest Box. To deter them, purchase a metal portal protector that goes around the entry hole of the Nest Box and prevents animals from widening the hole. It can be installed on new boxes or ones that already have damage.

Shake the winter blues off and head out to the garden for some pre-spring clean-up.
February is a great time to ...
- Cut back your liriope.
- Cut ornamental grasses, such as Miscanthus, Pampas, or Muhly Grass, back to 6-12 inches.
- Prune your roses. Shrub roses, such as Knockouts, can be cut back to 2 feet tall and wide.
- Rake up the leaves you ignored in the Fall and apply fresh pine straw or other mulch.
- Prune Spring flowering shrubs after they bloom (Forsythia, Loropetalum).
- Prune your crape myrtles, but don't commit "crape murder."
- Prune peach and plum trees, apples and pears if necessary.
- Prune tree branches that cross or rub other branches.
- Use Horticulture Oil Spray on any plant that tends to get insect or fungus problems in the Spring/Summer... Gardenias, Azaleas, Magnolias, Palms, Crape Myrtles, Indian Hawthorne, Roses, etc .
- Clear extra leaves and pine straw around emerging bulbs to allow them to grow.
- Plan your Spring projects! Now is the time to request our landscape design services before our designer gets too busy. Call Delores at 803-359-9091 to get on the list.

Just In
Hellebores (also called Lenten Rose) - We just received a large supply of unusual varieties of hellebores, just in time for Lent. Commonly called Lenten Rose, this plant is so-named for the time of year that it blooms. An added bonus: the flowers will hang on the plant for months after Easter, drying in place and continuing to exhibit lovely hues into summer. This low-growing evergreen perennial requires light shade and fertile, well-drained soil containing lots of organic matter. The varieties pictured above are in the Winter Jewels series, specifically Black Diamond and Sparkling Diamond.
|
What's Blooming
- Lamium (also called Deadnettle) - The trailing plant in the container pictured above is lamium. It thrives in cooler weather and comes in varieties that bloom pink, purple or white.
- Candytuft - This is an evergreen ground cover whose white blooms are some of the earliest spring flowers in the garden. It is best grown in medium moisture, well-drained soils in full to partial sun. Our hot South Carolina summers can take a toll on these plants, so some protection from the sun in the summer is best. Candytuft is drought tolerant and an excellent edging for borders, paths or walkways. Use it in rock gardens, let it sprawl over a wall or make it your trailing plant in containers.
- Loropetalum - Those red-leaf shrubs that are blooming pink, fuschia or reddish right now are called loropetalum. And contrary to popular belief, they come in all sizes. Mature plants can be small, medium or large.
- Oxalis - Green or Purple (also called Shamrocks) - It's time to get your Blarney on! These plants provide a great pop of color in an early spring container.
|
Doesn't bloom, but looks beautiful!
- Bihou Japanese Maple Tree - These Japanese Maples look just as pretty without their leaves as they do with them. Sporting bright yellow/orange bark in the winter, they make quite a statement against a background of evergreen foliage. The limbs look like flames shooting up to the sky.
