During the first week of November, Archbishop McNicholas High School joined the nationwide celebration of vocations. Please visit the
McNicholas Website for a listing of alumni in religious life. In this edition of Connecting the Dots, we get a look at the connection between McNicholas and the Athenaeum. For many years Fr. Ed Smith '74, and a former member of the faculty at McNicholas and currently serves on the Board of Limited Jurisdiction. During his days at the Atheneaum, Father Ed served as
Director of Formation and a faculty member at the seminary from 2000-2004. He was named Rector/President from 2004-2011. Today he is back at Christ the King in Mt. Lookout. Since this is Connecting the Dots, I would not be able to forgive myself if I did not mention, he grew up with my sister Chris '74, they took piano lessons together, and (save the best for last)- he presided at my wedding.
At the present, Fr. Dave Sunberg '84 is the Assistant Spiritual Director at the Seminary. Each seminarian is assigned to a spiritual director with whom they meet at least once a month to discuss, their spiritual life in regards to prayer and their vocation. It is helpful to have someone to talk to and listen and see how God is calling them to the priesthood. In this role, he works with Anthony Marcelli. His parents Jimmy and Mary were also both graduates of the Class of '82, as well as his sisters Kristina '06, and Amanda '09. Since this is Connecting the Dots, I would feel bad if I did not mention that both girls babysat for my kids many years ago! Anthony assisted Fr. Dave when the Class of '82 held a Mass in the Convent as part of there reunion weekend.

If it has not arrived yet, the 2017-2018 Annual Fund Mailer will be delivered to you during the next week. A successful Annual Fund is a critical to the financial health of McNicholas High School. Last year, the alumni of McNicholas High School contributed 83% of the total for the Annual Fund. We need the support of all McNicholas alumni this year in order to keep the great alumni momentum "rolling." Just in the last three years, the percentage of alumni providing financial gifts has tripled. We cannot thank you enough for your help.
Throughout this past school year, as I have attended many of the reunions, I have been able to witness the tremendous sense of pride that all of you have for McNicholas. Many of you have told me that your experiences here served as a tremendous foundation throughout your life. Your support through the Annual Fund helps us in our mission to provide this great life foundation for all current and future Rockets.

McNicholas hosts medal ceremony for WWII POW for Veteran's Day
Archbishop McNicholas High School hosted a special Veteran's Day celebration this year on Friday, November 10. U.S Representative and U.S Army Reserves Colonel Brad Wenstrup presented the French Legion of Honor Medal to World War II veteran Frank "Bud" Buschmeier. The French Legion of Honor Medal is the highest merit for military and civil merits. It was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.
Frank "Bud" Buschmeier was born February 28, 1923, and at age 19, he was drafted in the Army Air Corps, now the Air Force. He graduated from Terrace Park High School and began basic training on January 20,1943. After basic training, he went to armament school and advanced armament gunnery school. Buschmeier flew in B-17's as the left waist gunner with the 350
th squadron of the 100
th Bomb Group also known as the Bloody Hundredth.
On July 29, 1944, Buschemeier was on his 34
th mission headed to an oil plant in Meresburg, Germany, when hit. The right waist gunner was shot, eight of the crew bailed out, of which three were shot and hung, and four including Buschmeier became prisoners of war for nine months until the war's end. Buschmeier served honorably from January 20,1943 to October 29,1945.
The morning also included a thank you from the Brad Giesting family for the school's participation in the recent Random Acts of Kindness Day as well as a presentation to McNicholas for its participation in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. Tracy Butts from the Veteran's Administration recognized the nearly 170 volunteers who helped with the games this past July.
Following the program, McNicholas students hosted family members who are active military or veterans for a breakfast. A number of McNicholas alumni who are military veterans joined them.
In addition, thanks to the work of Phil Crane '55, the McNicholas Military Memorial has been registered on the memorials list maintained by the American Legion.

Alumni Gathering at a Basketball Game this January
Time to mark your calendars for an Alumni Basketball night. This game will be played on Friday, January 19. The varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m. Get together with your friends and come back to school to watch your Rockets take on the Chaminade Juliane Eagles. Tickets for alumni and family of alumni are only $5. All former Rocket basketball players will receive free admission, as long as they register prior to January 18.
After the game, alumni are encouraged to stick around for a reception in the new Cafe and Student Union; food and refreshments will be provided. To secure your discounted alumni ticket to the game (or free ticket if you are a former player) and a spot at the reception, please email Shawn Young. T

This picture was taken after running the Cincinnati Queen Bee Marathon. Over the last almost 35 years, this group of girls from the Class of '83 has really made a point of keeping in touch and getting together through milestones, good times, and some not so good times. This was their first race. Mary Dadosky, who works for Kroger, put this together for them. Kroger was a sponsor for the Queen Bee Marathon.
This group started getting together every month about 3 years ago when the first of them turned 50. Someone would host a get together for those girls who turned 50 that month. At the end of the year, about 15 of them went to Naples/Bonita beach for a week to cap off a wonderful year of celebrations. Mary Dadosky has been a real force making sure that they continue to get together. They now have a saying "Mary, make it happen!" Jackie Jones Grabareck has made a few trips down from Chicago to attend these get togethers, and the Cincinnati crew has made a couple trips to Chicago to see her. Sherry Robinson's daughter got married in Chicago, and about 10 of them attended the wedding. Like many classes they are amazed how great it is that they have maintained this friendship over 35 years.

St. Nick at McNick is returning this December
Before you know it, the Christmas season will be upon us. While many of us are not quite ready to start thinking about the season to come, the Alumni Association led by a dedicated group of alumni from the Class of '66 have dusted off their elf hats and are busy making plans.
We are asking for alumni support of our St. Nick at McNick effort.
St. Nick at McNick is an alumni service project championed by a team of alumni from the Class of '66. Its mission is to raise funds to gift and provide support to people in need during the holiday season. For some, St. Nick will provide gifts for Christmas. For others, the program will provide more basic necessities such as clothing, food and household items.
The number of people we are able to help will depend on the level of contributions. We hope that many of you will consider a contribution to the St. Nick at McNick effort. As McNick alumni, we are many in number, and even small contributions will add up..so give a little or give a lot. Together, we can be a mighty force.
We will be collecting contributions until December 5. A wrapping party is scheduled for Tuesday, December 12 in the McNicholas Café (the old Cafeteria). Start time 6:00 p.m...come when you can.

We will begin by supporting three organizations/efforts:
C.A.I.N. (Churches Active in Northside), an organization started and run by two McNick alums, Mimi Chamberlin and Cathy Graham both from the Class of '79. This is a wonderful agency that services people in need in one of the poorest zip codes in the city.
Beech Acres is a 'Parenting Center' which has over 165 years of strengthening Cincinnati's children and families. They serve 20,000 people each year.
Sammie's Bags of Hope is an effort of love. Teri Wellbrock '84, created this project with the goal of providing bags filled with "trinkets of hope" to the children she and Sammie work with. Sammie is Teri's therapy dog. The children have a P.T.S.D. diagnosis, trauma history and/or trauma-induced anxiety.

Reunions for 2018
Time to start planning
It is now time to set our sights on the next round of reunions. If your graduation year ends in a 3 or 8, you are up for a reunion next year. I will be sending an email to the reunion planning committees in the next couple of weeks. Some reunions are already starting to take shape, the classes of '58, '63, and '68 have already started having meetings. At this time, three reunion dates have already been selected. The Class of '58 and '63 have selected September 14 and 15. The Class of '68 will be celebrating their 50th reunion the weekend of October 5 and 6. As we move into 2018, please check our website to see as new reunion dates are announced.

plays soccer for Murray State University. During the first weekend in November they won the OVC Championship and then got to go to the Big Dance - the NCAA tournament! They played the University of Tennessee in the first round. Murray ended up being ranked 21
st
in the nation!

Sister Mary Urban Aranyos is celebrating 70 years of religious life. On Tuesday, November 28, she and her close friends will gather for Mass in the Convent Chapel. Fr. Steve Walter has agreed to celebrate liturgy.
