Winter Parking Rules
Please observe campus parking rules for winter, which include the following:

University Holiday Parking
  • If the University is officially closed for a staff holiday, regular enforcement of permit and payment rules will be suspended until the next business day.
  • Regulations regarding no parking and safety zones, fire lanes, reserved spaces including MT and service spaces, and accessible parking spaces are never suspended; a vehicle parked in violation of these rules can be cited and towed.

Winter Overnight Parking
  • Overnight parking in commuter lots is restricted to designated areas from December 1–April 1, when it’s snowing, or snow is forecast, to facilitate plowing and snow removal. These specially-signed areas are open 5 p.m.–7:30 a.m. to all registered vehicles:

Caller ID Change for Cornell Calls to Off-Campus Numbers
Beginning Saturday, December 16, Cornell will change how its phone numbers work with caller ID. Instead of showing as a blocked or unknown call, the Cornell phone number will be shown. Depending on your phone service provider, the caller ID may also display “Cornell University.” This change is necessary to support the university’s new 911 system, launching January 8, 2018. Safety Information from Cornell Police
Crime Never Takes a Holiday It bears repeating: be sure to lock up all residences (including shutting windows!), offices and labs on your way out, even if you are only gone for a short time .

Please help us out  by making sure doors and windows are securely closed and locked. Take steps to create the illusion of occupancy.

And, if you ordered something and are expecting it to be delivered, be on the lookout and practice good  package theft prevention .

Also, be aware of online scams. And check with Cornell IT regarding possible fake emails .

Wishing everyone a safe holiday and a happy new year!

Retiree Parking Options
Cornell University retirees have several parking options . They can use their CU ID to ride TCAT buses; Cornell pays the fare. This privilege is in effect Monday – Friday in TCAT's zone one. Zone one includes the City of Ithaca, Cornell University, Ithaca College, Kendal, the hospital, the airport, and the malls on Triphammer Road.

Retirees are also eligible for either unlimited TCAT transit privileges ( OmniRide ), or a no-fee R or O annual parking permit. Retirees who return to work on campus have the same   permit options  as regular employees. Retirees who come to campus occasionally may want to consider using the TCAT bus system to park downtown and then ride up to campus. The #10 bus is especially convenient as it comes every ten minutes or so and it's free with the retiree ID card. The bus leaves downtown near the intersection of Seneca and Tioga Streets at the Seneca Street parking garage. Job Opportunities
Babysitters/Caregivers Needed During School Closings
Ithaca and the surrounding areas have blustery winter days that prompt K-12 schools (and some child care providers) to close. When school is closed, Cornell employees often struggle to find caregivers for their children so that they can get to work.

As a retiree, you may be interested in this occasional paid opportunity to provide child care on a majority of these days (either in your home or in an employee’s home). If so, please consider joining the Cornell Family Helper List by submitting an application, noting your availability and experience. Applicants are added to the directory online and contacted directly by the family. Rate of pay and terms of the arrangement are negotiated between the parent and the babysitter. For information, please go online or contact Work/Life .
Volunteer Opportunities
Bell Ringers Needed in Ithaca!
The Salvation Army needs volunteer bell ringers. Make this a special holiday season... Volunteer! One sign that the holiday season has truly begun is the sound of bells ringing as the Red Kettle Campaign gets underway. The Salvation Army bell ringers are out in full force, taking their place in front of many stores in the area. With their familiar red kettles, these folks volunteer their time to raise money for others. The Salvation Army is currently in need of volunteer bell ringers now until Christmas Eve. Sign up to ring the bell online or call 607-273-2400 . Anyone can be a bell ringer, individuals or groups. Many people sing Christmas carols while ringing the bell. Most people volunteer for two hours. There are many other volunteer opportunities at the Salvation Army this holiday season and year-round. Information online .

FISH Needs Phoners and Drivers
FISH (Friends In Service Helping), a United Way organization that helps older adults get to medical appointments is looking for volunteer phoners and drivers – and you can help out starting at one day per month! How does FISH work? When a client needs a ride, they phone the 211 help line or 1-877-211-8667 and provide the necessary information. FISH has a schedule of monthly telephoners and drivers. On their appointed day, the telephoner receives requests that have come into the 211 help line, and then contacts the scheduled driver. Drivers then contact the client to confirm times and make pick-up arrangements. Most drivers volunteer for 2-3 days during the month. Many are on the "substitute list." The driver will drive the client to the appointment and either wait for them to finish or return to pick them up at an agreed upon time.

Volunteers will be fully trained, and if you are a driver, you can get reimbursed for mileage. Contact Beth McKinney at 255-3703 with questions .
Tax Volunteers Needed
Tax season is quickly approaching! Volunteers are needed for the Lifelong Tax Preparation Clinics. Tax clinics are held at Lifelong on Thursday/Friday/ Saturday from late January until the tax deadline in April. If you are looking for a worthwhile service to contribute your time and skills to, the Lifelong tax preparation service is looking for you. Whether you are preparing taxes or greeting clients, you will be helping members of our community improve the quality of their lives. And it can take as little as 4.5 hrs a week.

Tax Preparers
Preparers use materials provided by the IRS plus a week- long training session delivered by experienced volunteers to pass the on-line exam required by the IRS. Tax Preparers generally work one to two 4 ½ hour sessions per week depending on their availability.

Tax Greeters
Greeters welcome taxpayers, respond to questions from taxpayers, monitor wait times, and insure taxpayers are matched with the right volunteer preparer for their particular return.  A minor amount of reading preparation from IRS supplied materials and passing a short certification exam is required. Greeters generally work one 4 ½ hours shift per week depending on their availability.

Interested? Please contact Mary Pat Dolan at 607-227-0755.
