Lutheran Disaster Response Relief Efforts
During a time of an unprecedented number of disasters around the globe, our church is answering God's call to love others as ourselves. Here is a sample of what Lutheran Disaster Response is actively working on:
  • In California, where LDR, through the Sierra Pacific Synod and Lutheran Social Services of Northern California, will be responding to address the overwhelming needs of those affected by wildfires.
  • In Texas, where Hurricane Harvey caused destruction, we're hiring a disaster response coordinator to work with our partners and affiliates to connect volunteers and donations to where they're needed most.
  • In Florida, where Hurricane Irma caused damage, we're helping Lutheran Services Florida with relief for their most impacted staff.
  • In Haiti, we're supporting 100 female-headed households and 100 farmers whose gardens and livestock were lost to the hurricane.
  • In Cuba, we're supporting the distribution of items like cookware, dishes and blankets to help families get back to normal life.
  • In Mexico, where three major earthquakes struck within weeks, we're supporting our local partner as they distribute food, water and other basic necessities to those who have lost their homes.
  • In Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Hurricane Maria left devastation, we're coordinating the delivery of critical items including dry food, generators and solar-powered phones.

Recovery from these disasters will take years. Please continue to pray for and donate towards our neighbors impacted by disasters around the world. Stay up to date: http://www.elca.org/disaster and http://facebook.com/ELCALDR.

From the Presiding Bishop - "Living in a Broken World"
We hear about natural disasters and shootings, and we try to make sense out of the incomprehensible. In her November column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton says the joy found in Jesus allows us to live in hope and believe in life amid despair and death.

New Tools for Extending Your Christmas Invitation

Advent and Christmas are right around the corner and can be a very busy time in the life of this church. To support your communication needs, the ELCA has prepared a number of invitational tools created specifically for congregations. Many people will look for a place to worship this Christmas. Extend a welcoming invitation to your neighbors and community by sharing your worship times and location!

The Christmas collection is available in English and Spanish and offers customizable posters, post cards, doorhangers and social media. "Let us be your home for the holidays," "This Christmas, there is a place for you here" and more - all concepts include a welcoming invitation for others to come and experience worship at your congregation. Select the creative design that will work best for your congregation.

Thank you for the work you do each day in your congregation and in your community. Visit ELCA.org/CongTools often and find links to a variety of tools to help with your communication needs, and continue to send suggestions for other tools that might be good resources for congregations.
Resourceful Servants - Congregational Certification Program
We often speak of the many dimensions of wellness in our lives - spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social and physical, for instance. Financial well-being is another vital component in our endeavor to live well. In the months and years ahead, the ELCA will focus on this concept as we embark on "Resourceful Servants," an initiative to encourage habits that strengthen and sustain individual and congregational financial wellness and growth.

Through the Congregational Certificate Program, your congregation has the opportunity to follow a road map to greater financial stability, using healthy behaviors which focus on five key areas: Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Risk Management and Stewardship.

Each module contains resources related to healthy financial behaviors. Ultimately, by implementing and maintaining a set of financially healthy behaviors, and tracking them through this website, your congregations will receive a certificate, indicating your focus on financial health.

More information about this initiative, go to https://resourcefulservants.org/.

Celebrating Ministry Together!
You're Invited - Installation of Julie Kelly - December 10
We are pleased to share that the congregation of Hope Lutheran in Riverside, has called Julie A. Kelly, Approved Candidate for Ministry of Word and Sacrament, to be their pastor. All are invited to attend her installation on Sunday, December 10th at 3:00 p.m. at Hope Lutheran, 2882 Arlington Avenue, Riverside.

Julie is beginning her first call after graduating the Luther Seminary Distributed Learning Program for MDiv's in 2016.  She completed her CPE at Los Angles County Hospital and her Internship in Santa Monica while living in San Fernando Valley and SWCA Synod.  She is married to Lance and they have 4 adult children together. She has strong military ties due to Lance's service in the US Army (recently retired) and is an advocate to help prevent the rising tide of military and Veteran suicides.  Her undergraduate degree from Ft. Hays State in Hay, KS is in Organizational Leadership with emphasis on Organizational Change and Human Services.  She loves using art to prepare sermons and her favorite topic that raises eyebrows is how Christians can reclaim healthy sexuality.  Her pink streak of hair is her statement of faith that trusts that others can see past exterior assumptions to the value of the human underneath.
ELCA Youth Leadership Summit
The ELCA Youth Leadership Summit is an annual gathering for high school youth identified as leaders and adult representatives from each synod from across The ELCA. This summit focuses on leadership development through engaging speakers and thought leaders in key areas at the intersection of leadership and faith in daily life AND faith formation and building connections for high school youth in the ELCA. Youth are challenged to take home what they have learned to inspire action in their own synods and youth groups.

This year's Summit took place November 2-5, 2017 in Houston, Texas. Two youth from our Pacifica Synod Youth Team attended the Summit along with Synod Youth Team adult advisor, Terri Robertson. Sydnie Brown is our Synod Youth Team President and Gabrielle Mark is the Saddleback Conference Rep on the Synod Youth Team. Both share their experience below:

Sydnie Brown, Carlton Hills, Santee
Hello! My name is Sydnie Brown and I am the current president of the Pacifica Youth Synod Team. I went on a trip to Houston, Texas for the ELCA Youth Leadership Event where every Synod was invited to select two teens from their team to go and learn more about leading others. I learned many valuable lessons about myself, how we can work together to be the best people we can be. On that note, that was the theme of that weekend, "Me, We, Be". Which means in context, it all starts with me and how I can change for the better to make up a better we. And we can work together to be the change we want to see in the world. My favorite part of the weekend was learning about myself more, how I make decisions, where I go from here, how I problem solve, etc. I found this the most helpful because being a senior I am faced with decisions, work and conflicts everyday and this weekend helped me learn to take a step back and take it all in and just open my arms up to faith and grace and leave fear and worry behind me.

Gabriella Mark, Mission Lutheran, Laguna Niguel
I was given the amazing opportunity to go to the Youth Leadership Summit in Houston and am so thankful I got to go. During this weekend, I learned so much about how I can improve my leadership skills. I got to listen to some of the current leaders of the ELCA and hear how they came to follow the call for God to be a part of the ELCA. Listening to their stories was so empowering and uplifting. I also got to see other youth take on leadership roles and learn from how they led. There was youth from all over the country there and I thought it was so cool to learn the similarities in our churches and how they lead in their congregation. I do think seeing so many youth from different states was my favorite part of the trip because it really showed how the Lutheran Church is connected all though the country. I feel that this experience has helped me grow in my leadership skills and I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to attend this amazing event.

Middle School Youth Gathering 2018 - Anaheim
This past weekend, over 200 middle school youth and their adult leaders gathered at the Sheraton Park Hotel in Anaheim for the 2018 Middle School Youth Gathering sponsored by Lutheran Retreats, Camps and Conferences. The theme of the weekend was "Instagood".  Bishop Andy Taylor brought a greeting and shared a message on Saturday morning. In addition to speakers, the gathering featured various workshops and a trip to Disneyland.
