Progress Reports
On Friday we distributed Quarter 2 Progress Reports. If you have a student attending LNMS, please sit down with them as soon as possible and review their results. We have several options available for our Knights in the way of 1:1 tutoring so if your child is not quite where they should be at this point, please take advantage of the tutoring before final grades are issued.

Teach-In
In this week's update you will find some inspiring pictures from last week's Teach-In event. Thank you so much to our guests that carved out time from their busy schedules to speak with the students about their career and educational choices. I think you will find that the pictures below speak for themselves as the students were most captivated and the presentations will leave a lasting effect. We are greatly appreciative of everyone's time and effort. Thank you so very much.

Thanksgiving Break
While we do have school on Monday, November 20 due to Hurricane Irma in September, the campus will be closed November 21-24 for Thanksgiving break. At this special time of year, I would like to share with our teachers, support staff, administrative leaders, and the community how thankful I am to serve as your principal. In my position, I have to observe the larger picture and whether it is the at-home support from our parents, the district's investment in the latest technology, our seemingly tireless faculty that give it their best daily, business partners and a PTSO that raise their hands and say "count on us" or a support staff that keeps it all running smoothly, LNMS is a school community that has much to be grateful for.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

steam

If you are new to the idea of STEAM the acronym stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, and started as simply STEM, without the A for Art. STEM and STEAM based learning has become a huge educational movement in the US in recent years. It began because of the noticeable lack of candidates entering the fields of engineering and science here in the US compared to other countries. This year our event has grown from just a Science Event to one that includes our Technology, Art and Math Departments.

During the evening each department will showcase student work, present demonstrations and introduce activities to spotlight some of our curriculum we conduct in each department. We will have our science fair projects on display. Mr. Science (Mr. Neason) will be back this year with chemical reactions to stun and amaze. The art department will have a gallery of student work that is sure to put the Smithsonian exhibits to shame. Our math and science departments will sponsor activity stations that will show that these two subjects really can be fun! Our technology department will show us how they use the TV production station for morning announcements and we will again have informational sessions on Sun Games.

Please plan to join us to celebrate the first semester and all the work your children and their teachers have accomplished!

Civics with Mr. Rivera

rigor
Mr. Rivera's 7th grade Civics class was using real life scenarios last week to help students interpret the true meaning behind the Preamble of the Constitution. An example included the use of Dave's Killer Bread. Great job Mr. Rivera!

Orlando Science Center - Student Volunteer Opportunity

The Academy
The Academy is offered to students aged 13 through 17, and meets throughout the school year. Completion of the academy will allow for additional opportunities to apply for paid (stipend) summer internships and select employment positions here at Orlando Science Center. The Academy launches this spring and will meet every other Wednesday for 10 weeks. All workshops, Academy meetings, and internships will occur on-site at Orlando Science Center. Currently, we are offering introductory sessions on the 15th and 29th of November and the 13th of December. Sessions will run from 4:30pm to 6:30pm and count as volunteer service hours.

School Year Volunteers
Volunteers aged 13 to 17 (18 if still enrolled in high school) can participate in a progressive and exciting program that builds off time commitment. During the school year, first-time applicants are considered for the Youth Event & Exhibit Hall Team. Youth Volunteers have the chance to engage their curiosity by learning new science concepts while facilitating unique, fun, and hands-on learning opportunities for our community. Additional information and an application is found through the following URL: Click Here for School Year Volunteer Description!

SSYRA Book of the Week
War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley  (Review from Goodreads.com)

ssyra An exceptionally moving story of triumph against all odds set during World War 2, from the acclaimed author of Jefferson's Sons and for fans of Number the Stars.

Nine-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada's twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother Jamie is shipped out of London to escape the war, Ada doesn't waste a minute-she sneaks out to join him.

So begins a new adventure of Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read, and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan-and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother?

This masterful work of historical fiction is equal parts adventure and a moving tale of family and identity-a classic in the making

Author's Insight to our SSYRA Book of the Week . . .

Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of hearing Kimberly Brubaker Bradley (above on far left) speak during an author panel at the national school library conference I attended. One of the questions the moderator asked each of the authors was in regards to their research. Mrs. Bradley recalled driving in England with her daughter on a quite precarious two lane road, which wound up the steep hill, hugging against a cliff which dropped off to the sea on one side, and as they rounded the bend they came upon the open vista at the top . . . and that was Ada's lookout which she wrote about in the book. What an experience!

Knight Athletics
Volleyball Season concludes . . .  Knights bound for the playoffs December 4th (HOME)

Congratulations to both of our volleyball teams on advancing to playoffs! Our boys team finished the regular season as the Division Champions! They sealed the deal last week after defeating South Creek and a difficult opponent Freedom.

The Lady Knights ended their season with an outstanding record of 6-1 coming second in the Division! Way to go Knights and best of luck in playoffs! Both teams have been working extremely hard to reach this point and it has paid off!

* Please come out and support your Knights as we are fortunate to be hosting both games on Monday, December 4th starting at 5:30pm.
