New Organization to be Formed to Promote Local Farm Fresh Products in York Region.farmfresh

Finding local food in York Region will become easier in the months and years ahead.  Farmers and farmers' markets in York Region made the decision to form a new organization called York Farm Fresh and held its inaugural meeting on November 27.  "York Farm Fresh will connect customers and the community to York Region grown local food, beverages and products at farms, farmers markets and farm experiences," says Chris Conzelmann, the newly elected Chair of the organization.

The members will work together to produce joint marketing such as social media campaigns, a map and brochure initiative that are supported by the Region and Municipalities in East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King and Whitchurch-Stouffville. Promotions and educational initiatives for the members are all part of the future plans for the new organization.

Two membership categories will exist Full Members and Associate Members.  Full Members are farms and farmers' markets that market their products directly.  The second membership category will be Associate members and they will have a vested interest in promoting agricultural products produced or processed in York Region.  Membership forms may be requested by contacting at www.facebook.com/yorkfarmfresh or Twitter @YorkFarmFresh.

Congratulations to the new Board of Directors including Chris Conzelmann (King Cole Ducks), Nikki Simpson (Simpson Family Farm), Chloe Romeril (Pine Farms Orchard), Nancy Defilippis (19th Avenue Farmers Market), Judi Zajac (AE Natural Meats) and Pat White (Homestead Farm).  In attached picture left to right (Judi, Chloe, Pat, Nikki, Chris, absent - Nancy).

New Transient Accommodation Tax Regulations Released.accommodationtax

In response to the requests from the municipal sector, the 2017 Provincial Budget granted municipalities the authority to implement a tax on transient accommodations, should they choose to do so. The legislative changes came into effect on Dec. 1st, 2017.

The new regulations will provide municipalities with the flexibility to determine the design, administration and collection of the tax. The regulations also recognize the importance of tourism in Ontario communities by maintaining funding to existing tourism organizations that have benefited from Destination Marketing Fees (DMF) in the past.

At this time Town of Georgina staff has not reviewed this new legislation and its applicability for Georgina.
