ACTION NEEDED:
Call your US Representative and both of our US Senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, to support HR4477 (in the House) and S.2135 (in the Senate) to Fix NICS, National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
This legislation will improve and enforce reporting to NICS.
To find your legislators:
WHY IT MATTERS:
- More than 20 people were killed at a mass shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The gunman, a former member of the US Air Force, was imprisoned for domestic abuse but the Air Force didn't relay that history to NICS, which should have prevented him from buying the guns he used.
- This legislation will make it easier to legally prevent individuals from buying a firearm if they have previous felonies, indictments and other crimes which include domestic assaults.
- The Senate Bill provides financial incentives for states and federal agencies to increase the frequency of reporting offenses that would legally prohibit an individual from purchasing a gun.
- There is rare bipartisan support for this legislation.
