The Farm Credit Youth Livestock Showmanship Circuit Banquet will be held on Friday night, November 17 th in Raeford, NC at 7:00pm.  This is an opportunity for youth livestock showmen and their families to "close out" the 2017 show season by enjoying an evening of good food and award presentations.

Peak season soil sampling testing fees go into effect December 1, 2017 and will continue through April 1, 2018. During this time period, the cost of soil testing is $4 per sample. Outside of the peak season, soil testing is free to growers. Samples with completed soil sample information forms must be delivered and received by the Agronomic Services Division prior to Dec. 1  to avoid the fee. MONTHLY AGRICULTURE RECAP:

Cattlemen's Association Meetings
The Montgomery County Cattlemen's Association met on October 10 th .  There were 66 in attendance to hear representatives from Southern States (cattle mineral programs), DOW AgroSciences (new herbicides for pasture weeds) and Boehringer Ingelheim (new cattle vaccinations).  President, Archie Smith made the announcements about the 2 major cattle sales that we had coming up in the county.  McNeill Farms in Seagrove hosted their annual sale in October and
C-Cross Cattle Company had theirs in November.  Blue Q Ranch will be hosting a sale in early 2018.  The Cattlemen also met for their last meeting of 2017 on November 14 th .  Attendance was high as usual.  The crowd this time gathered to hear Sergeant Branden Jones with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.  Sergeant Jones discussed the laws associated with hunting, fishing and trapping in Montgomery County and what landowners can do to prevent poaching and trespassing.

2017 NC State Fair Youth Market Turkey Show

Six members of the Montgomery County 4-H Livestock Club traveled to Raleigh on Friday, October 13 th to show the turkeys that they had been caring for since June. The NC State Fair Youth Market Turkey Show had over 300 competitors registered this year and the competition was tough. Out of all the birds being shown, Montgomery County did well and brought home two 9 th place finishes, one 10 th , an 11 th , a 12 th place and one 14 th place. Showmen this year were Elijah Farlow, Joel Farlow, Ethan Helms, Hunter Helms, Caroline Johnson and Bryson Johnson. These young people put a lot of hard work and dedication into raising their turkeys for this show. We appreciate how well they represented Montgomery County at the fair.

Family and Consumer Science Happenings in Montgomery County
from Rhonda Peters
Family & Consumer Science Agent
Sequoia Hill, Nutrition Educator
Jennifer Morgan, Nutrition Educator

The Family and Consumer Sciences program  was  very active during the
month of   October, participating in community events, providing education to the public, completing various training and honing skills to enhance future programming.

We started the month hosting the South Central District regional meeting for Family and Consumer Sciences Agents.  Our entire staff worked together to plan and prepare a delightful meal with locally sourced food provided from C-Cross Cattle, White Oak Farm, West Montgomery High School FFA, and Ken Chappell.  The meeting focused on planning for future directions with Family and Consumer Sciences as a region, with exciting new ideas that we look forward to implementing here in Montgomery County.

On Wednesday, October 11, Family and Consumer Science Agent Rhonda Peters and a youth volunteer participated in the Senior Fun Day at the James Garner Center.  The pair educated seniors about the importance of nutrition and physical activity as we age, and highlighted ways to maximize a food budget with the "More in My Basket" program.

The FCS Program was honored to receive donations from Master Gardener, Mr. Richard Persin, as well as from White Oak Farm.  Jamie Warner (Livestock Agent) collaborated with Rhonda to develop canning skills that Rhonda will then share with the community in upcoming classes.  The pair successfully canned various pickles, peppers, tomatoes and tomato soup, which will be used in upcoming FCS and Extension programs.  We send heartfelt thanks to Mr. Persin and White Oak Farm for their generous contribution!!!!

Jamie, Rhonda, and Sequoia Hill (Nutrition Educator) collaborated to offer a food demonstration at the final Montgomery County Farmers' Market of 2017.  Pumpkin and Ricotta Stuffed Shells were a definite hit, drawing a total of 86 people to the market. Food for this recipe was donated by White Oak Farms, and was used to help draw customers to the market and increase revenue for the merchants, as well as show families how to incorporate healthy, seasonal fruits and vegetables (like pumpkin and kale) into their diet to improve overall health and nutrition.

Rhonda and Molly have completed refresher training for the Safe Plates curriculum offered through NC State University.  This is a Food Safety Manager Certification program that will meet the NC Food Code requirement component of the food establishment's inspection.  Plans are being made to offer the program in January 2018.  More information about class details and registration information will be available soon on the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension website.  Stay tuned!

For the month of October, Sequoia Hill, Nutrition Educator, started her nutrition program with all pre-K students at Troy, Green Ridge, Candor, Mt. Gilead, and Star Elementary schools. The pre-K curriculum is called Go Glow Grow and it is past of the Try Healthy program that focuses on physical activity as well as healthy nutrition recommendations that are age appropriate. Each of my lessons last about 30-45 minutes and the children learned about healthy foods (USDA based recommendations), had a physical game, and ate a healthy snack that was easy to make at home. The program began at the beginning of October and she finished the first week if November.
