Living Windows
Dozens of downtown storefronts will come to life during the 19th annual Living Windows celebration on Thursday, December 14 from 6 to 8 PM. The event includes ice sculpting, carolers, puppet shows, treats, marshmallow roasting with the Burlington Fire Department, crafts, the festival of trees at the Burlington Apartments, storytellers, free horse drawn trolley rides, and much more. Visitors can stop by Santa's Cottage in Nancy Neafie Park, sample some holiday goodies, and do some shopping, too. Thanks to presenting sponsor Pritchard Broadcasting for making the Downtown Partners holiday events possible.
Holiday Shop Hops Continue
Every Thursday evening until Christmas, many downtown merchants will be open late to fit customers' busy schedules. The great majority of retail shopping takes place after 5 PM. Happily, we are seeing more businesses embrace evening and weekend hours (which also plays off the restaurant traffic), making downtown even more of a destination.
Here Comes Santa Claus!
The jolly old elf himself will be greeting visitors in downtown Burlington at Nancy Neafie Park on the corner of Sixth and Jefferson. Santa will be at his cottage during the Holiday Shop Hops on December 7 and 21 from 6 to 8 PM, as well as during Living Windows. There is no cost, and cameras are welcome. Creating fond memories of downtown for families today helps build support for downtown tomorrow! Many thanks to Carl A. Nelson & Co., Travis and Hillaurie Fritz-Bonar, Jerry Johnson, and Andy Bentley for their assistance with Santa's Cottage.
DPI Board Nominations
For those of you who own commercial property in the downtown Self Supported Municipal Improvement District, the ballot has been sent for DPI board nominations. This year we have emailed many of you a link to an anonymous online survey for the process, which considerably reduces time and expense. Whether using the online survey or paper, please return your ballots by December 15.

  • We're very pleased that DPI has received a $75,000 Main Street Challenge Grant for work at the historic depot to refinish the waiting room floor and prepare the diner area for reuse. Stay tuned!
  • Is your business interested in presenting a 5 & V outdoor movie next summer? We have one sponsorship opportunity remaining; contact Steve Frevert for details.
  • Thanks to the handful of volunteers, sponsor Pritchard Broadcasting, the Des Moines Co. CERT team, and all the participants who made the Lighted Holiday Parade such a big success. It was great to have so many people enjoying family time downtown!
  • In addition, we're grateful for the revamped 200 block of Jefferson, with 13 new parking spaces. This really helps the businesses in that block - and doesn't it look great?
  • As you consider your year end giving, please think of the nonprofit Capitol Theater. This key downtown anchor and community amenity cannot survive on ticket sales and concessions alone; it requires sustained financial support to stay open. For more information or to contribute, contact Tammy McCoy at 319-754-8069. Your tax-deductible donation is vitally important and deeply appreciated.
