Roxbury Kids Pushed to Wonder: If Not Them, Then Who?
About 30 young people involved in school organizations affiliated with the Roxbury Rotary Club were urged Wednesday to ask themselves a big question: When help is needed, who should do it if not themselves?

The prod for self-reflection was made by Roxbury Rotarian Steve Alford at the beginning of the second annual "All Things Rotary Caring, Kindness and Giving Summit." The event took place in the Roxbury Senior Center.

Guided by Alford, the youngsters thought about, and talked about, generosity and community involvement. Represented at the session were kids from all four Roxbury Early Act Clubs as well as members of the Eisenhower Middle School Builders Club and the Roxbury High School Interact Club.

During the 2-hour-long "Summit," the youngsters engaged in group activities that helped them focus on the tenets of Rotary, including generosity and community service. Click here to read more about this volunteer summit from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Interact Club Hopes to Brighten Christmas for Some at Merry Heart
Thanks to the efforts of about 20 Roxbury High School students, who recently braved bitter cold and rain at an outdoor fundraiser, some seniors at the Merry Heart nursing home in Succasunna will receive miniature Christmas stockings and gifts.

The students, who are involved with the Roxbury High School Interact Club, braved nasty weather Nov. 18 to help the Roxbury Rotary Club sell and distribute fruit and pies outside the Roxbury Recreation Center at Horseshoe Lake Park. Despite the less-than-desirable weather, the students happily served customers while Christmas music and rock songs blared from a large speaker.

The estimated $400 raised on that day will be used to make mini-stockings and Christmas gifts for seniors at Merry Heart who do not have families with whom to celebrate the holiday. Click here to read more about this event from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Boy Digs Into Piggy Bank to Help the Hungry
Before 9-year-old Wyatt Glasser's grandfather died, he wrote a letter to the youngster urging him to embrace generosity. Last week, the boy followed that advice by tapping into his piggy bank to buy supplies for the Roxbury Social Services Food Pantry.

The Kennedy School fourth grader's mother, Liza Nechamkin Glasser, said her son not only spent $10 of his savings on groceries, but also took the time to help put the items on the Food Pantry's shelves.

Franklin Student Urges Roxbury to Donate Socks for the Homeless with 'Sox in a Box' Project
A Roxbury elementary school student with a big heart has launched a program to help the feet of the homeless.  Faith Hurtado, an 8-year-old who attends Franklin School in Succasunna, initiated the "Sox in a Box" program that is currently collecting new socks that will be given to homeless people in Morris County.

"Homeless people walk a lot because they do not have a place to stay and they often do not have a good pair of sox," says a poster promoting the effort. It notes that socks are "the most requested items in homeless shelters" but are the least likely to be donated.

Hurtado's goal is to give a new pair of socks to every homeless person in the county.  The socks are being collected in boxes at St. Therese Church in Succasunna and at the Roxbury Recreation Departmetn on Eyland Avenue. Additionally, people who want to donate new socks can write to Hurtado's mother, Damaris, and she will come to get them. The email address is srp.damaris@gmail.com. Roxbury Family Uses Holiday Light Show as Fundraiser for Boy with Brain Tumor
A Roxbury family is inviting everyone to come see their home's holiday light show and, if they do, to donate money for a local boy battling a brain tumor.

Rob and Melissa Katz, of 56 Parkview Drive in Succasunna, are collecting the donations on behalf of Matt Adonis, a Roxbury 4th-grader who was found in September to have a brain tumor. There have been several other fundraisers for the youngster and an  online GoFundMe page on his behalf has collected about $18,000 in donations.

Katz, a former police officer who now drives a Roxbury school bus, is close to the Adonis family having coached Matt in ice hockey for about five years. "I've seen other people with light displays take donations and I thought, `What a great way to raise a few dollars,'" he said. "I might make a few hundred bucks for them." Click here to read more about this from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Pitstop Likely for Next Lake Hopatcong Veteran Cruise
Roxbury was not one of the places on Lake Hopatcong where people could gather to cheer for veterans taking a special cruise last July. That's likely to change, said Roxbury Mayor Mark Crowley.

The annual "Salute to Veterans" tour, in which the 57-foot refurbished skipperliner "Miss Lotta" takes veterans around the lake, while folks on the shore cheer, should be able to make a stop in Landing this summer, said the mayor.
He said it appears the Landing Channel is deep enough to accommodate the Miss Lotta when it carries about two dozen veterans around the lake for the 2018 event. Crowley said the depth of the channel was recently tested and - unless the lake loses a lot of water before the next Salute to Veterans - it will be deep enough for the boat. He said the vessel needs about 60 inches of water. Click here to read more coverage of this voyage from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Waives 20-Year Residency Rule, Will Erect Street Sign for Slain Vietnam Soldier
A Roxbury man who died in the Vietnam War will be honored with a small street sign despite the fact that he didn't live in town long enough to meet a township policy regarding the so-called "street blades."

The Roxbury Mayor and Council on Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of installing a street blade on Thor Drive in Succasunna to honor deceased soldier James Ohlinger, who lived on the road before being killed in action Nov. 19, 1966 at 21 years old. Click here to read more about this from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Students Invited to Mountain Bike Team
A recently formed interscholastic mountain biking team based in Randolph is inviting sixth-grade to 12th-grade Roxbury students to participate.

The team, called the Randolph Revolution, fields riders that compete in mountain bike races in the  New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League (NJICL), a National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) sanctioned, statewide mountain biking league for youths, said Jeremy Klopper, one of the coaches. The Randolph Revolutions is a "composite" team that includes riders from Randolph, Roxbury, Mine Hill, Dover and Victory Gardens.

Klopper said the team was established "to provide area youth an opportunity to meet new friends and ride the local trails." The riding season runs from October through late June. Click here to read more information about this opportunity from Tap Into Roxbury.
