Giving Tuesday Update
Giving Tuesday 2017 was a success! Because of you, we exceeded our goal of $5,000 and raised $8,700 from 78 ACPE members and friends to support innovative research and programs. I offer a special thank you to ACPE President Carlos Bell who led our effort with a generous match for Giving Tuesday gifts. Congratulations on a job well done! I remain grateful for our work together to ensure ACPE thrives as the leader in spiritual care & education.
Resource for Contract Supervision
Many of you have asked about a template for Contract Supervisors. We have one that includes the expectations of the Accreditation Commission and provides for membership dues. Please let us know if you have questions. You can access the document here.
#MeToo and ACPE
ACPE is not immune from the shift in cultural attitudes towards those accused of sexual assault and/or sexual harassment. Clinical pastoral education often raises important questions about sexuality, boundaries and personal histories with people who can be very vulnerable. The AAUW has created a helpful resource for people with questions about this timely topic. You can read more here.
A Poem for Reflection
It's that time of year, where the hustle and bustle, the memories and memory-making, the comings and goings collide in ways that can leave us thrilled, despondent, energized and exhausted. In light of all of this, my prayer is that we all experience happiness with the depth offered by Jane Kenyon.
"Happiness" by Jane Kenyon

There's just no accounting for happiness,
or the way it turns up like a prodigal
who comes back to the dust at your feet
having squandered a fortune far away.
And how can you not forgive?
You make a feast in honor of what
was lost, and take from its place the finest
garment, which you saved for an occasion
you could not imagine, and you weep night and day
to know that you were not abandoned,
that happiness saved its most extreme form
for you alone.

No, happiness is the uncle you never
knew about, who flies a single-engine plane
onto the grassy landing strip, hitchhikes
into town, and inquires at every door
until he finds you asleep midafternoon
as you so often are during the unmerciful
hours of your despair.

It comes to the monk in his cell.

It comes to the woman sweeping the street
with a birch broom, to the child
whose mother has passed out from drink.

It comes to the lover, to the dog chewing
a sock, to the pusher, to the basketmaker,
and to the clerk stacking cans of carrots
in the night.

It even comes to the boulder
in the perpetual shade of pine barrens,
to rain falling on the open sea,
to the wineglass, weary of holding wine.
Something Extra
Okay, so some of us are still recovering from the bounty of the Thanksgiving table, and in most cases I'm referring to the conversations, not the food. So as you look to a season filled with social gatherings, I offer the following list as a way to strike up meaningful conversations, even with those with whom such conversations might be a little more than difficult (i.e. laden with years of family drama - you know the kinds....) |  100 questions to spark conversation & connection.
Something Else Extra:

The following came from ACPE Certified Educator Yoke-Lye Kwong:
Under the rushing waters I go,
Deeper, deeper, deeper,
What is yet to be revealed is yet to unfold,
Deeper, deeper, deeper,
From unconscious to conscious,
Deeper, deeper, deeper,
The pressure is building,
As I go deeper, deeper, deeper,
A beautiful pearl awaits me in a shell,
Deeper, deeper, deeper,
Am I willing to take the risk?
To go deeper, deeper, deeper,
I have found a pearl, it is quite large in size,
Who would have known?
Who would have thought?
The gifts my peers share,
without at times knowing,
Has given me the treasure I seek.
The pearl.
