Washroom Facility Installed at the Lions Park in Springhill

The Municipality is proud to have completed a capital project in Springhill which saw the installation of a washroom facility for the Lions Park in Springhill. This is a significant investment for park users that was graciously supported by Farm Credit Canada's AgiSpirit Fund, the All Saints Community Health Care Foundation, and the 2015 Christmas House Tour Committee.

Regional Tour Beginning in Truro to Launch New Fundy Connect Web Space
Cumberland, Colchester, Amherst, Millbrook First Nation, Oxford, Sipekne'katik, Stewiake, Bible Hill and Truro will soon be the latest regions to embark on a provincial initiative to better communicate information about all the things to do and places to see in Fundy.

The Municipality's Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee Bulletin 17-12
Just as there is a right tool for every job, there is a right extinguisher for every fire. The class of an extinguisher, identified on its nameplate, corresponds to the class or classes of fire extinguisher controls. On most construction jobs, we are concerned with Class A, B, and C. In most cases, a multi-purpose Class ABC extinguisher, which contains dry, powdered chemical under pressure, is best. In kitchens, a type K extinguisher is used.

Creative NS Awards Gala held November 18, 2017
This prestigious award is given annually to the community which best demonstrates a commitment to the integration of arts and culture into the fabric of everyday life. It will be presented at the Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala, Saturday November 18, 8:00-11:00 pm, at The Discovery Centre in Halifax. Norman Rafuse, District 13 Councillor for the Municipality of The County of Cumberland, will accept the award on behalf of Parrsboro. The Community Arts and Culture Recognition Award carries a cash value of $10,000, and the money will be used to further the connection between the arts and its community. Last year's winner - Lunenburg.
"This award is a testimony to the extraordinary amount of artistic involvement in this community", says Parrsboro Executive Director Robert More. "The number of people engaged in creative pursuits in Parrsboro is amazing, and the variety of arts and culture organizations is impressive." Among the many groups flourishing in Parrsboro are:
Ship's Company Theatre, Art Lab Studios & Gallery, two museums, Fundy Geological and Ottawa House, Classics By The Bay, contemporary art at Main & Station, and The Hall, a thriving cultural/entertainment hub always busy with art exhibitions, open mic nights, music classes, workshops, a feature film series, the Citizens Choir, theatrical presentations and more!

Springhill Outdoor Recreation & Multi-Sport Complex Design Open House Update

Open House held on November 16, 2017
The Municipality held an Open House in Springhill to discuss options for the proposed Springhill Outdoor Recreation & Multi-Sport Complex. At this preliminary meeting, a variety of recreation facility options were discussed that had a focus on trails, athletic fields, and special features.

Low Income Tax Exemption
The Municipality's Low Income Tax Exemption applications are now available. The Low Income Tax Exemption provides assistance to homeowners to help pay their residential property taxes. Qualified applicants will receive a credit which is applied directly to the tax account.
Application forms are available on our website or may be obtained by calling or visiting one of our services centres located in Upper Nappan, Springhill or Parrsboro.

Age-Friendly Communities Grant Program
The Age-friendly Communities Grant program, administered by the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors, supports community planning and collaborative, innovative projects that support the goals of promoting healthy, active living and enabling older Nova Scotians to age 'well' - in place, connected to community life.
The Department of Seniors is accepting grant applications under two categories:
- Age-friendly Community planning:Support for consultation and community planning initiatives that result in robust action plans and facilitate the creation of Age-friendly Communities. These planning initiatives must be in partnership with local government and include consultations and engagement of older adults, the broader community, and key stakeholders throughout the entire process.
- Community Projects:Collaborative, innovative projects to develop and implement programs, services, resources or events that support active, healthy living, help older adults to age 'well'-in place connected to community life and increase social interaction and community involvement among older adults (50+).

Community Development Grant
Available through Communities, Culture and Heritage the Community Development Grant is designed to support activities and initiatives which respond to the recreation and physical activity goals and priorities of communities and the Shared Strategy for Recreation in Nova Scotia: Active Living, Inclusion and Access, Connecting People and Nature, Supportive Environments, and Capacity Development.
Applications will be accepted between April 1st and
February 1 of a given fiscal year pending legislative approval of the budget.

Joggins Fossil Institute seeking new board member for fundraising
The Joggins Fossil Institute (JFI) Association is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that works in partnership with three levels of government, the private sector and the community to protect, present and promote the natural heritage values of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the award winning Joggins Fossil Centre. The Joggins Fossil Institute is led by a 12-member board comprised of federal, provincial, and municipal government representatives, residents of Cumberland County, members of the scientific community, and members at large. Members of the Board are appointed for a two-year term.
The Joggins Fossil Institute is currently seeking applications for a board member who has interest and experience in fundraising.
