I hope this week's issue finds your December off to a fantastic start! We are now down to only 14 school days remaining in the second quarter. The students' Winter Break begins on Friday, December 22.

As I mentioned in our last community update just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, both November and December have a number of special events planned including sporting events, holiday concerts, and PTSA spirit nights to name a few.

I would like to thank our school community for stepping forward at Thanksgiving to help some of our families in real need. Our SGA did a marvelous job of coordinating the Thanksgiving Holiday Food Drive and just shared the name of the 1st period class that led the school in terms of total donations (story below). I never cease to be amazed at the kindness and generousity of the Lake Nona community; especially as the year-end holidays approach.

Enjoy your week and again, please take a close look at the calendar below as it is packed with quite a few exciting activities that your whole family might enjoy.

Good luck Knights in the volleyball playoffs!

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

DIT students earn Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications to prepare for College & Career

We are pleased to announce 26 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications in PowerPoint 2013, an industry-recognized, standards-based credential for validating Microsoft Office skills, were earned on November 14, 2017.

The MOS certification is recognized globally by academia and business as the premier credential for individuals seeking to validate their knowledge, skills and abilities related to the Microsoft Office applications. LNMS began offering the MOS certification in the 2016-2017 school year to students in 8th Grade DIT (Digital Information Technology, a High School Credit Course) through their partnership with Certiport, a Pearson VUE business.

"We are pleased Lake Nona Middle School has successfully implemented the Microsoft Imagine Academy program and is awarding these valuable MOS certifications which help so many students prepare for further education and build their resume," said Mrs. Jackson, Principal.

The DIT course focuses on helping students achieve a "bundle" of three certifications in PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. The next certification exam date will be offered on December 19.

Knight Music

Twas the weeks before Christmas, when all thro' the LN Country Club,
The 6th Grade Chorus was singing, before the guests chowed down on grub.
The children were nestled all snug on the stairs, as the tree was now lit by the stairwell with care.
The chorus children had antlers on the top of their heads, and soon would be settled down in their Lake Nona beds.
Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer, and Vixen!
On! Comet! on Cupid! on Donder and Blitzen!
But I heard them exclaim, ere they drove out of sight,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!

Knight Art
This week's snapshot of "rigor in the classroom" from around the campus . . .

Complementary Color Scheme Watercolors
Students recently did drawings of art tools that are used regularly in art class. All of the students practiced drawing eight different art tools and then selected three that they wanted in their final artwork.

Initially, the students measured their paper into three equal sections and then did a contour line drawing of each selected object. Students then added patterns or other designs for the background of each section of their artwork and then painted with watercolors in three complementary color schemes. Students used one complementary color scheme on each of the three sections of the artwork.

The three complementary color schemes that students were able to use for this art composition are: red & green; blue & orange; yellow & violet.

Student Government Association Community Update

Over the past month, members of our SGA have been busy. From meeting with authors and members of the school board, sitting on a technological panel about screen usage, and collecting food for our community in the Thanksgiving Food Drive, students have been representing our school with great honor!

clapping Speaking of the Holiday Food Drive, SGA would like to announce that Ms. Royer's 1st period class donated the most items. SGA is working with them to cater a breakfast for the students before the break! Congratulations to Ms. Royer and her students.

Lake Nona Holiday Toy Drive
December 4th to December 20th . . . THANK YOU!

Overview
As you know, the holiday season is upon us and, with that, the giving spirit. SGA is announcing one more drive to end the year. SGA would like to welcome you to the 4th Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Ever since the hurricane, our community has needed our help more and more. The Lake Nona Middle School SGA has teamed up with Three Points Elementary School to help out many of those in need. Three Points Elementary School, which is located near Lee Vista and Goldenrod, is categorized as a Title 1 School.

Sixty Children in Dire Need (Christmas morning is now just 21 days away)
Not only having students already there needing help, Three Points has received many kids from surrounding counties and countries, like Puerto Rico. This toy drive is to help those kids in need and others at that school that are less fortunate. Three Points Elementary has given us a list of about sixty (60) kids that are considered homeless or really have nothing for the holidays. SGA would like to ask for your help in giving them the holiday they never have expected!

Collection Period
The Toy Drive will be held from Monday, December 4th through Wednesday, December 20th, 2017. The Toy Drive will go through all 1st period classes. 1st period classes will collect items, and SGA will collect the items every Tuesday after school. For collection on Tuesdays, all you need to do is place your items outside your door.

First Period Challenge!
To make this more interesting, and to help more of the community, all first period classes will be in competition with each other! The winning class will receive a gourmet breakfast, donated by SGA.
Points will be awarded per item. Weekly updates will be sent out to notify first period classes of their standing. Any first period class can participate, no matter the number of students!

Below is a list of items that can be donated . . .

SSYRA Book of the Week
Terror at Bottle Creek by Watt Key (Review from Goodreads.com)
In this gritty, realistic wilderness adventure, thirteen-year-old Cort is caught in a battle against a Gulf Coast hurricane. Cort's father is a local expert on hunting and swamp lore in lower Alabama who has been teaching his son everything he knows. But when a deadly Category 3 storm makes landfall, Cort must unexpectedly put his all skills-and bravery-to the test. One catastrophe seems to lead to another, leaving Cort and two neighbor girls to face the storm as best they can. Amid miles of storm-thrashed wetlands filled with dangerous, desperate wild animals, it's up to Cort to win-or lose-the fight for their lives.
