MITCHELL, Donald Grant (Ik Marvel) [1822-1908]

Donald Grant Mitchell, pseudonym Ik Marvel, was an American essayist and novelist known for nostalgic, sentimental books on American life. He is particularly known for his essay collection, Reveries of a Bachelor, which focuses on the dream-like lives of mid-nineteenth-century Americans.

Kate Douglas Wiggin was the author of numerous children's books, notably, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm; she also founded the first free kindergarten in San Francisco, and devoted much of her working life to children's welfare and charities.

TOLAND, John Willard [1912-2004]nce)

 John Willard Toland (1912-2004) was an American writer and historian, best known for his best-selling biography of Adolf Hitler. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1971 for his history of World War II-era Japan entitled The Rising Sun.

This collection includes approximately 400 pp. of annotated tss. of stories and novellas, 1 ms. notebook (60 pp.), 60 letters, 50 b&w photos (army related, amateur shows and skits), and 4 programs.
The collection pertains to the early period of his career 1936 to 1950's when he desperately aspired to be a playwright, short story writer, and novelist.

STUART, Ruth McEnery [1849-1917]
 
Ruth McEnery Stuart,  (American novelist and short story writer). Stuart became prominent among writers of dialect stories, by an originality and charm which offset the disadvantages of her being a late comer in a well-worked field. She has been considered the "leading writer of Negro dialects". In 1915 she was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Tulane University.

BATES, Arlo [1850-1918]

Arlo Bates was an American author, educator and newspaperman. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1876. In 1880 Bates became the editor of the Boston Sunday Courier (1880-1893) and afterward became professor of English at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This collection includes 8 Autographed Signed Letters (ASL), 1 note (signed) and two books (one signed and one with Bates bookplate) dating from 1883 to 1897.

ATHERTON, Gertrude Franklin Horn [1857-1948]

Gertrude Atherton was a prominent and prolific American author. In addition to novels, she wrote short stories, essays, and articles for magazines and newspapers on such issues as feminism, politics, and war. Atherton was an early feminist well acquainted with the plight of women.

BALDWIN, Faith [1893-1978]

Faith Baldwin was a U.S. author of romance and fiction, publishing some 100 novels, often concentrating on women. The New York Times wrote that her books had "never a pretense at literary significance" and were popular because they "enabled lonely working people, young and old, to identify with her glamorous and wealthy characters.

FRY, Christopher [Arthur Hammond Harris] [1907-2005]

Christopher Hammond Fry was an English poet and playwright. He is best known for his verse dramas, notably The Lady's Not for Burning, which made him a major force in theatre in the 1940s and 1950s.

Bert Leston Taylor was a journalist, doggerel poet, and humorist. He became a journalist at seventeen, a librettist at twenty-one, and a successfully published author at thirty-five. At the height of his literary career, he was a central literary figure of the early 20th century Chicago renaissance as well as one of the most celebrated columnists in the United States.

The Stewart's immigrated from Ireland to settle on the Otonabee River in Douro Township in 1822. The Stewarts were among the first European families to settle in the Peterborough-Lakefield region in the first half of the nineteenth century and to make a go of it; their neighbours included the Traills, Moodies, and Stricklands.

Ephemera included:
1) Two family photographs pasted to front pastedown dated  Christmas 1914 (perhaps descendants of Frances Stewart?). Signed July 31, 1902 letter written by E.S. Dunlop  (née Stewart), daughter of Frances and editor of this book.
2) Letter thanks the unknown person sent to for a gift and hopes the book (Our Forest Home) helps with the person tracing her family. Letter on tissue has old tape marks, now flat and in good condition.

Dated (on the Rhine 20th May 1833.
9-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches. Autograph letter signed. Two pages, Two pages, 4to. With postscript on verso by his wife Margaret, also a writer. To his wife's mother, Lady Hunter. Basil Hall's letter reads in part: "My dear Lady Hunter, I write merely to report of myself and to mention that here we are safe and sound and all happy and merry with our journey....
Margaret Hall adds: 'That is to say you may desire Jane to send the book to Mr. Dollard. We at present plan going on either tomorrow or the following day from Coblentz to Mayence also by Steam Boat, a...

Basil Hall was a British naval officer from Scotland, a traveller, and an author. Following Basil Hall's  retirement from the navy in 1823, Hall was married on 1 March 1825 to Margaret Congalton (d. 1876), the youngest daughter of Sir John Hunter, Consul-General in Spain by his spouse Elizabeth Barbara, sister to Sir William Arbuthnot, 1st Baronet.

EARLE, John Charles (1850-1903)         
 
 John Charles Earle was a barrister (called to the bar in 1876), however he was a gifted writer of hymns and sonnets. Earle wrote, amongst other texts: English premiers from Sir Robert Walpole to Sir Robert Peel.

Various sizes and condition varies. 19 items including 6 Autographed Letters SIgned (ALS), 10 pages of proofs and 3 pages of text.  The archive of manuscript poems and letters by Earle and others. Some content includes:

George Ramsay, ninth Earl of Dalhousie, served as Lieutenant- Governor of Nova Scotia (1816-1820), then as Governor-in-Chief of British North America (1820-1828). He served twelve years in Canada. Dalhousie is considered the first patron of the arts in Canada. 
 
Foolscap bifolium (Gater 1811 - Britannia watermark) Secretarial, marginal browning; signed by George Ramsay as 'Dalhousie'.  Dated Halifax 15. September 1819 and addressed to the Judge Advocate General, presumably Sir John Beckett.

Autograph Letter signed, dated Admiralty, 1st June [n.d.] (likely between 1836 when Parry was employed at the Admiralty, and 1839, when his wife, Bella, died) addressed to a friend, Sarah.
32 lines on two 8vo pages, approx. 5x7 inches, hinged on the left with linen onto a larger album page, very good condition.
A friendly letter:
"Dear Sarah, I am charged with Bella's letter to get franked, and I will not let it go without one line from myself to assure you how much we long to see you, and that we have this morning at breakfast, made a regular arrangement for your coming to see us, and we do hope that you will give us that pleasure. We are delightfully situated, close to the Zoological Gardens, and you shall sit up all night, if you like it, to hear the beasts roar & howl! But seriously,...

A line before post goes out to thank  you very heartily for your kind welcome to Dumfrieshire. I hope by persistent efforts, we may get your countrymen - or at least a sufficient number of them, to hear some reason as to the doings of the Grand old man...

Leopoldo Cicognara was born to a noble family in Ferrara, Italy. He was an Italian poet and an amateur artist, a patron of the arts, and one of the founding fathers of the discipline of Art History.
 
26cm x 20.5cm (10-1/4 x 8 inches), Handwritten letter in Italian, 2 sided, was folded to 8.7cm x 10.5cm (3 x 4-1/8 inches) now flat.  Letters from Leopoldo Cicognara do not often come to market and this 1830 letter to his friend  Zanetti will present more insight into Cicognara.  Some spotting and two right edge pieces of paper are missing affecting a couple of letter in the text, otherwise in good condition ...Click on for more information and photos;

Covers very worn with inside pages in good condition.  Early Handwritten ledger, to keep the accounts of a Dentist / Doctor, in earlier days of Nova Scotia. The ledger owner is considered Dr. Alfred Roscoe Andrews based on some of the pasted in notes found inside the diary.  
 
Entries include "To attend wife (night), extract tooth, set arm, to attend to wife comfort. With payments by cow, sheep, chicken, work on buggy, sleigh repair, by books, by cords of wood, etc. Bound in original marbled paper over boards with cloth backstrip.   NY, 15 Dec. 1774, DS, 2pp, 7.75 x 12.75 in., Johnstown, Tryon County, (Fifteenth year of the reign of King George the Third). Legal document regarding a debt, signed by Hendrick Frey, Judge.
Condition: Folds and toning as expected otherwise very good. All mounted on larger sheets with cut-outs so both sides visible.

The Hygeia was a steel Paddle steamer built in 1890 by Napier, Shanks & Bell in Yoker (Glasgow). The ship was built for Huddart, Parker & Company, Melbourne Australia. Her overall length was 300ft, her beam was 32ft and her draught was 11ft giving her a displacement weight of 986 tons. A comfortable Port Phillip Bay steamer, she could carry 1,600 passengers.

"Lord Stanley"  engraving London published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C.  Drawn by C.W. Walton. Paper size is 17-1/2" x 23-5/8". Plate mark size is 10 1/2" x 13". Image size is 5" x 7".
Signature Imprint:  Lord Stanley [facsimile signature], Stanley family motto, "Sans Changer" or without changing. Overall condition is near fine now.
 
In 1892, this Lord Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby gave  a treasured North American sports icon - the Stanley Cup to symbolize hockey Championship. It is the same Stanley Cup the National Hockey League competes for each year now. First edition. Circa 1857. Image: 39.2 x 26.2 cm (15.4" x 10.3") Currier & Ives hand-coloured lithograph  Titled: 'The Railroad Suspension Bridge, Near Niagara Falls; Length of Bridge 822 Feet, Height Above Water 240 Feet', 1856, John A. Roebling, Engineer (builder of the Brooklyn Bridge).  The image was printed from two lithographic stones: a tint stone, in light brown ink; and a key stone in black ink. Watercolour in greens, blues reds and browns was hand-applied over the printed image print and was professionally cleaned and washed along with filling of any paper losses and reinforcing with Japanese tissue, otherwise, very good condition.

The Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge was the world's first working railway suspension bridge Suspension bridge . Opening of the Suspension Bridge in 1855 (which stood from 1855 to 1877).

American "script" document allotting 40 acres of land to " War of 1812 " soldier Seth Willey, a corporal in Captain Wilson's Company, during the war of 1812.
It comes with affidavits attained to the reverse dealing with its ultimate use in South Dakota This is a very scarce item seen only infrequently on the market.  Very Good condition. 
 
Willey used this certificate to pay for the land. What is a big added bonus is that all the supporting paperwork where he redeemed it is attached. The only land script document  we know of with this amount of additional  supporting documents.
