Cultivating Gratitude for Health & Happiness
December  2017

We just celebrated the heartwarming holiday of Thanksgiving. This holiday brings us into the season of reflection, joy, happiness and gratitude.

While I was working on my book, "Happiness through Meditation," I became aware of the idea that "we are not grateful because are happy, we are happy because we are grateful."

Interestingly, social science research reveals that practicing gratitude not only helps us feel happier and more fulfilled in life, but it also has powerful healing benefits for our emotional and physical.

Dr. Robert Emmons, author of, " Thanks: How Practicing Gratitude Can Make You Happier" has found that people who choose to cultivate gratitude also experience less stress symptoms, get sick less often, are more optimistic about the future, sleep better, are more resilient when facing tough times, have more energy and enthusiasm and are more likely to be compassionate and support others.

It is also possible to practice gratitude during difficult times. In choosing to find the positive and viewing the glass half-full, gratitude and happiness are a choice in the moment that can be exercised regardless of external circumstances.

Cultivating gratitude takes practice. Like building muscles when weightlifting - the more we do it, the stronger and more resilient we become. Gratitude brings us into the now... the present moment, where life and happiness can be found.

Here are 3 very simple gratitude practices which can deliver many positive benefits described above.
  1. Keep a gratitude journal. Write down at least 3 things that you are grateful for every day.

  2. Write a thank you letter to someone who impacted your life, if possible deliver it in person

  3. Take a gratitude walk to reflect on all you have to be thankful for

I am grateful for the opportunity to be of support and service to others as I continue my life's work and passion.  I am also grateful for all those who have supported and guided me along the way.  Expressing my gratitude brings me happiness and joy.

I wish you a wonderful conclusion to 2017. As we approach a new year... m ay you be grateful and happy.
