Contra dancing is the older cousin to the square dance. With no fancy footwork, dances are led by a caller; and the music is always live and lively. Bob Holt will be 100 in December
In answer to the standard question -- "to what do you attribute your longevity?" -- Bob says, "breathe in, breathe out" to which he adds "good genes." It is likely, too, that his extensive engagement in many pursuits throughout his long life has had a lot to do with it. Most of his working career was as a Professor of Clinical Psychology, teaching, doing research, and writing papers and books. He grew up in Jacksonville, FL, but abhorred the segregation that prevailed in the South and left it for good when he started college. Besides his intellectual professional work -- for which he received a federal life-time career award during the Kennedy administration -- he participated actively in peace and justice causes and directed a peace-studies program at New York University. He worked for an international ban of nuclear weapons; and, following the accident at Three Mile Island, he actively opposed nuclear energy. He was a devoted environmentalist. When he retired and moved to Truro he stayed active well into his nineties -- gardening, swimming, and singing in the Outer Cape Chorale. He chaired the Truro Recycling Committee for many years, and was a member of several other town committees, including the Human Services Committee, the Board of Health, and the Energy Committee. Deeply concerned about climate change, he has covered his roof with solar panels. He hopes that all Truro residents will find ways to reduce their "carbon footprint" so the world's children will have a livable planet. These days, he is slowing down, but maintains a sunny disposition, freely exchanging affection with family and friends, reading and listening to music. He never ceases to be concerned about what lies ahead for future generations. He is heartened by the new wave of activism among young people and urges them on. Happy Birthday, Bob.
