Southport Marina has always felt a strong connection and commitment to supporting the NC Maritime Museum at Southport and its mission of preserving our local and regional maritime history for future generations to be inspired. The backbone and epicenter of this driving effort is- and has been- Mary Strickland, museum director. This month, Mary will be moving on to the next chapter of her life- RETIREMENT. We're happy for her and ever grateful for her service to our great little City and it's rich history! Congratulations on a meaningful career, and best of luck to you, Mary! Below is a picture of Mary and me at her last Board of Directors meeting with the Friends of the Museum. -- Hank

The "Maritimes", the magazine of the North Carolina Maritime Museums, in its Winter/Spring 2018, published a beautiful article about Mary. We've included a pdf copy below, reprinted by permission from the NC Maritime Museum at Southport, but you should also swing by the museum when you're in town next time and pick up a printed copy for yourself!

Classic Hot Buttered Rum

Hot Buttered Rum is  a favorite winter drink  because it is both sweet and warm, which is just the kind of comfort we want on the coldest days of the year. You will find that the Hot Buttered Rum is a cozy, creamy drink that is irresistible.
1 small slice soft butter
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 dash ground cinnamon
1 dash ground nutmeg
1 dash ground allspice
1 splash vanilla extract
2 ounces of dark rum
5 ounces of hot water

Place the butter, sugar, and spices into the bottom of an  Irish coffee glass or mug. Mix well or  muddle. Pour in the rum and top it with hot water.  Stir.
Make sure that your water is hot, but not boiling. If the water is too hot it can ruin the flavors of the drink. Think of it like making tea and heat your water as if you're brewing a cup of Earl Grey.
Adjust the spices to suit your taste. Some people prefer more cinnamon or nutmeg while others don't enjoy allspice, so be sure to customize it.
Not a fan of rum? If you prefer whiskey, then you can make the simple switch and mix up a Hot Buttered Whiskey.

Southport's  Holiday Events

The annual Southport Christmas Flotilla will be held Saturday December 9 at 7 pm immediately following the completion of the Southport Historical Society's Tour of Homes. The Flotilla is sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Downtown Southport, Inc. (DSI) and the Cape fear Yacht Club. All pleasure boaters, commercial fishing vessels and paddle vessels wishing to decorate their boats with colorful lights and designs are welcome and encouraged to participate in this community event as part of the Southport Winterfest. The Flotilla is free to all who enter. Southport Elementary School's fourth grade art class students compete in school art competitions to win the honor of judging the categories for first, second and third place winners for power, sailing and paddle vessels. They are highly competent judges and their decisions are final.
The Flotilla forms up at the entrance to the Old Yacht Basin and the Intracoastal Waterway near Old American Fish Company at approximately 6:30 pm. The parade of boats will start precisely at 7 pm with the firing of the Southport Historical Society's cannon, THOR. The Flotilla escorted by a USCG vessel cruises slowly by the Southport waterfront as close to shore as safely possible up-river to Kingsley Park and returns to the start point. The judges will be located at Waterfront Park in the general vicinity of the parking area closest to the river.
There are numerous great viewing spots all along the waterfront to include many Southport restaurants with outstanding views and great food as well. It is a good idea to claim your spot and make dinner reservations early. Bring your lawn chairs and possibly a jacket and blanket.
Immediately following the Flotilla and as soon as participants dock their vessels, there is an awards party for all participants at Old American Fish Company with the traditional Flotilla Chili provided by Frying Pan Restaurant.
Mother Nature makes no guarantees and sometimes there is rain, fog, fast currents and high winds, but for the majority of the Flotillas, Mother Nature smiles on Southport. The Flotilla will be conducted under the safest conditions possible for all participants. There is no makeup day for the Flotilla.
Come on out and see a fantastic display of lights and fun community event with all the decorated boats and their illuminated special designs. The City of Southport welcomes you as you enjoy our Winterfest activities and events.
Anyone interested in entering a vessel in the Flotilla may contact Randy Jones, Department of Tourism (910-477-1484), Peggy Popelars, DSI (910-279-4616) or Woody Wilson, Cape Fear Yacht Club (910-454-4327) email address: [email protected] .

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

Have any of you spotted the International Space Station flying past in the night sky lately??? Coastal NC had a great opportunity this past Monday, with clear skies and an almost 8 minute view of the station! Here's a picture of what one friend saw here Monday (look very closely at the sky above the tallest tree in the picture)! See when you might have the opportunity to see this at your location here.
