The Wave
December 1, 2017
Welcome December!
We will be sending out Term One report cards to every family electronically next Friday. We are doing the final proofreading and getting everything attached and ready to send.  You will find the fall edition of the Currents, which is a publication that we spend much time on, sent to you in the mail in advance of the report cards. We hope that it gets to your home by Wednesday. This publication is to be used in conjunction with the report cards, helping you develop the large picture of what your kiddos have been up to throughout this first term. This was written by all of our teaching staff, helping to keep you informed of the curriculum and giving you a place to ask questions of your kids.  It would be a huge help on your end if you could take a moment to fill out the short survey on the report cards and the Currents that we will send along with the report cards. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Today, the Perspectives classes (all of them) will be studying a lesson on Giving.  Why do people give of their time and talents for the greater whole?  We have a toy drive in full swing and the toys are due by Thursday of this coming week.

Secret Snowman is here! We have included all of the details below. Please note, this is an optional activity.  If your kids want to join, there is a required parent signature.  Please monitor what is being sent to school. There should be a gift for each of 5 days. For the 1st - 4th days, there is a $1.00-2.00 limit.  On the 5th Day, the committee set a $10.00 limit.  Thoughtful gifts are so appreciated.  Hopefully, all families will take their kids under their wings and help them wrap and make this activity a very special one, if you choose to participate.

Electives for December started today! We have derby cars class, all about birds class, cooking baking & decorating class, Spanish for fun class, adirondack chair painting class, Origami class, and a coding class!  Our entire staff wanted to share their talents and have a fun way to end our Fridays in December.

Our school is such a fun place!

Staff Holiday Wishes
It is a wonderful time of  the year to wish our staff a lovely holiday!  We ask that you do NOT send in any gifts during this season.  We would much rather that you buy a toy and drop it in the Toy Drive in the name of the entire staff.  We know that we have so very much, we are absolutely thankful for that.  We hope that we can spread that cheer to the kids of the Community Transitional School.  Please help us with the toy drive - that is just enough!

TOY DRIVE -
11/27 - 12/7/17
The Community Tran-
sitional School is a K-8
School for homeless
kids!  On Christmas
Eve, volunteers deliver
toys to their homes or
hotels.  We want to help them and we have some very kind 8th grade leaders leading the charge!  Please bring a toy, unwrapped, to school.  They also need wrapping paper!  Hope you can help these kids have a wonderful holiday celebration.  Please do not wrap.  We will deliver on Friday December 8th.

TRCS Friendsgiving!
We wanted to take a moment to thank Karen Gault & Tawny Friedman with the very fun family event held right before Thanksgiving.  The food was so good, the games around the school worked great and best of all everyone had the chance to get together on an informal basis.

What a great community event! Thank you to everyone who had a hand in it!

And we hit the goal for the Food Drive!  The Oregon Food Bank thanks you.
We always work to make December a little bit different - variety is the spice of life. The teachers and several staff members have "elected" to share their talents with the kids.  This is way beyond their mad wild educational talent. These classes will be the last thing each of the three Fridays in December. Students were asked prior to Thanksgiving break to give us their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice in electives.  We can't wait to start! The cookies are baking, the derby cars are ready to carve, paper to fold, Spanish to celebrate, birds to feed, and chairs to paint.  We hope that each and every student has some fun ahead!

Secret Snowman!
All gifts are due December 7th - all 5 gifts must be marked M-F.
This optional activity is a secret giving activity.  The leadership students have sent an approval slip with any student that was interested.  These were due Thursday 11/30.  Parent permission required.  Five gifts need to be brought to school on Dec. 7th, wrapped and clearly labeled with Monday - Friday.

Mon -Thur limit: $1-$2
Friday limit: $10

Please be mindful and respectful of what your kids may have in mind.  We will secretly deliver during the day. It is all just for fun!!!
GINGERBREAD EVENT!
On Thursday December 7th after school, we will provide the supervision, pizza, drinks and the fun! Oh yeah, and the gingerbread houses and candy!  Your kids will come home the very next day with a completed and lovely gingerbread house.  We have the candy, the frosting and most importantly the teachers are going to make it a huge fun event!  We hope to see you there.  The cost is $25.00 for the entire package. Learn more.

Great fun!
Good friends!
Create a masterpiece!

This year's theme is Science Fiction. Kids can bring their own inedible supplies to decorate!
TRCS Snack Bar!
Our 7th and 8th grade leadership students have elected to open their own snack bar.  They have small items for sale for the month of December.  We will again offer a snack bar in April/May.  If you will help your kids manage how much they spend at the snack bar, we would so appreciate that.  We will have "specials" for sale a few times this month.  This is all for the interest and fun for the month of December.  We hope it does not cause a disruption to your daily routine.

TERM 1 CURRENTS SENT IN MAIL TUESDAY!
If you do not receive the Currents, please give us a call and we will send a copy home with your kids.  You will want to read about Term 1 curriculum.  Thank you so much for your interest in our curriculum

Scrip for the Holidays!
Each Tuesday by 10:00 am,  we need your Scrip order for the week.  What a huge way to support your outdoor school account, if you are in 6/7/8.  All you do is select what you need, we order and pick up and send home Thursday with your kids.  It is so easy and a few families have made quite a dent in their ODS fees! Please order Scrip, it really pays off!

Roller Skating
We want to wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday ahead.  We are planning a roller skating outing for our school December 15th to Oaks Park. We will be going from 10:00 - 12:00 PM.  Please make sure your kids wear clothes for the skating rink!

Happy Holidays ahead!
TERM 1 REPORT CARDS Coming!!!!
We will be sending home Term 1 report cards on December 8th. These cards will be electronic with a password. We have a short survey attached.  We hope that you take the time to invite your kids for hot cocoa and celebrate their huge successes!  We are proud of each and every student!  They all improved and feel great about the movement forward. Be watching your inbox!
