Salt & Light
Scripture
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.  2 Timothy 2:1 - 3 (NKJV)

I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.  I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
Psalm 16:7, 8 (NKJV)

"You are the earth's
salt.  But if the
salt should become tasteless, what can make it
salt again?  It is completely useless
and can only be thrown out of doors
and stamped under foot.  You are the world's
light -it is impossible to hide a town built on the top of a hill. Men do not
light a lamp
and put it under a bucket. They put it on a lamp-stand
and it gives
light  for everybody in the house."
Matthew 5:13 - 15 (Phillips)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual
forces  of wickedness in the heavenly
places.  Ephesians 6:12 (NASB)

SALT & LIGHT

Most of the people who read this article are not prepared or able to take up the "conventional weapons" of war.  However, God does clearly call us to take up "spiritual arms" (weapons of warfare).

Ephesians 6:13-17 lists how we can effectively participate.

The defensive armor for spiritual battle is the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.

The one offensive weapon is the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.

The modern and biblical nation of Israel offers a striking example of how dangerous and exhausting it is to drive the enemy out of occupied territory.

Unfortunately, our country now seems bent toward unrighteousness and evil.  False religions, moral decadence, corruption in government, disrespect for God, even His removal from our justice system are evident to those who study and are aware of current trends.

As Christians, we need to reclaim our position of being salt and light in a society that has lost the moral decency and spiritual moorings that traditionally lead to righteous living and love for God.

In the short blip of our existence in history, we need to take every opportunity to speak, live, do, give, go, teach, share, encourage and love others into the kingdom of God.  We need to meet the challenges of our country head on.  Be brave, be courteous, write that letter; get involved and speak the truth of your Christian convictions respectfully in love.

Most importantly, persist in prayer.  The prayers of a righteous, humble, trustworthy child of God release the power of Almighty God.

I place economy
among the first and most important virtues,
and public debt
as the greatest dangers to be feared. . . .
To preserve our independence,
we must not let our rulers load us
with perpetual profusion and servitude. . . .
If we run into such debts,
we must be taxed in our meat and drink,
in our necessities and our comforts,
in our labors and in our amusements. . . .
If we can prevent the Government
from wasting the labors of the people,
under the pretense of caring for them,
they will be happy.

Thoughts on Leadership: Thoughts and Reflections From History's Great Thinkers by Forbes Leadership Library

What's the point?  When God says, "My Spirit will not always be around to restrain sin," we had better take the clue!  God isn't going to keep holding this messy world together forever.
My mother used to say to me, "You are trying me, boy!"  Did your mother ever say that to you?  "You are trying my patience."  Sometimes my mother would just say, "Uh-huh, Uh-huh."  Or she would say, "Keep on. Just keep on."
I never knew when it was going to hit, but my mother had the fastest right hand in the world.  BAM!  What she was saying was, "Don't keep playing with me.  Don't keep messing with me."  Then judgment would fall.

The Promise by Tony Evans

We live in a contaminated moral environment.  We have fallen morally ill because we became used to saying one thing and thinking another.  We have learned not to believe in anything, to ignore each other, to care only about ourselves.  Notions such as love, friendship, compassion, humility, or forgiveness have lost their depth and dimensions; for many of us, they represent nothing more than the psychological idiosyncrasies, or appear to be some kind of relic from times past, rather comical in the era of computers and spaceships . . .
It is up to all of us, and only us, to do something about it.  We cannot blame the previous rulers for everything-not only because it would be untrue but also because it could weaken our sense of duty, our obligation to act independently, freely, sensibly, and quickly.  Let us not be mistaken: even the best government in the world, the best parliament, and the best president cannot do much on their own.  And in any case, it would be wrong to expect a cure-all from them alone.  Freedom and democracy, after all, require everyone to participate and thus to share responsibility.
