Sock It To Em Sock Campaign 2017
Did you know that socks are the number one clothing need of the homeless, as they wear out faster than any other article of clothing, and are rarely donated? To address this issue, a campaign to raise awareness and collect socks was started in Denver in 2011 and has spread to other cities across the country. Our community’s support of this initiative
|
|
began when Mayors throughout the Metro Denver area signed a proclamation designating December 10, 2014 as Sock It To Em Workday, a day for residents to forego wearing their socks as a show of support for the homeless, and to recognize the great need among the homeless for warm socks. Last year 127,000 pairs of socks were delivered to over 90 shelters, services, agencies, events and schools in the Metro area.
The
Town of Superior, along with other area communities, continues to strongly support this effort, and we encourage residents to participate this year to raise awareness and help by donating a new pair socks for the homeless. The Town will host a
donation collection point in the lobby of
Superior's Town Hall during the whole month of December. EVERY pair matters, so please stop by Town Hall to help make a difference today.

Energy Saving Tips From EnergySmart
|
1) Americans create 25% more trash during the holidays; consider buying a used gift or making homemade presents. Make a pledge to not to buy gifts that use electricity or batteries, but if necessary, invest in rechargeable batteries!
2) LED holiday lights use 90% less electricity than regular light strings, and can be purchased anywhere for around $10 a strand.
3) Lighten up for the New Year by recycling your extra fridge or freezer. These are much less efficient than new Energy Star rated units and if they end up in the garage, they will work extremely hard in the summer. Recycling this would drop electricity bills immediately, and
Xcel Energy offers a free recycling service and a $50 rebate for doing so.

Pilot Project to Help Calm Traffic in Original Town
|
After a series of serious and significant complaints and subsequent community dialog with the Town’s Transportation and Safety Committee, along with multiple traffic and speed monitoring studies, the Town Board has determined cut-through traffic in Original Town has become a major issue for the residents who call this part of our community home. For this reason, the Board has decided to initiate a
public awareness campaign emphasizing the use of McCaslin Blvd. and Marshall Road to access the Superior Marketplace. Guide signs are now installed on McCaslin directing traffic headed to the Marketplace to use Marshall Road exclusively, instead of cutting through the Original Town neighborhood on Coal Creek Drive. In addition, a new pilot project will restrict traffic patterns and discourage drivers from cutting through Original Town. The new lane configuration has been installed at 4th Avenue & Sycamore Street, requiring northbound 4th Avenue drivers to turn right at Sycamore Street. The Board will be reviewing feedback regarding this project over the course of the next several weeks, so please email your thoughts to Public Works Director
Alex Ariniello at
alexa@superiorcolorado.gov.

|
McCaslin Boulevard Roundabout
|
|
The
roundabout at McCaslin Boulevard and Main Street is open to traffic on the northern, eastern, and southern approaches. This double lane roundabout will serve through traffic on McCaslin Boulevard, Downtown Superior on the outer lane, and U-turns on the inner lane.
The advised speed through the roundabout is 20 mph.
|
|
McCaslin BRT to Coal Creek Trail
|
The 10-ft multiuse path connecting the Coal Creek Trail with the McCaslin Boulevard BRT (bus rapid transit) station is substantially complete. This trail is open to bicyclists and pedestrians wishing to connect from the US 36 Bikeway, Downtown Superior and the Coal Creek Trail to the McCaslin BRT and Superior Marketplace, Original Town, Sagamore, and Coal Creek Crossing.

|
Improvements to the drainage system
in the Town-owned open space south of Snowmass Circle and east of McCaslin Boulevard began last month. Improvements include installing a series of culverts, regrading existing swales, installing rip rap, installing a concrete pan and restoring a portion of crusher fines trail in an effort to improve the flow of water that accumulates in the area. Noraa Concrete Construction was selected as the low bidder for this project.

Everywhere you look
holiday lights are popping up on houses and trees. Please when you string the lights ensure you follow a few safety rules to keep them burning cool and bright. Only use outdoor lights outside, do not string more lights together than recommended by the label, and only use outdoor rated extension cords outside. Turn off lights and blow out candles before leaving the house or going to bed. If you are tripping breakers it is a great sign that you are overloading your outlets. Reduce the number of lights you have strung into each outlet and check each strand for damage and replace as needed.
Are you dreaming of a nice warm fire this holiday season? Quick easy steps will help you keep that fire in the
fireplace and prevent it from extending to your house. Please keep all combustibles a safe distance from fireplaces. Do not push furniture against gas fireplaces, even ones that are off. Turn off your fireplace before leaving the house or going to sleep for the night. Have your gas fireplace checked and serviced by a qualified technician to ensure safe and efficient burning. If you have a wood fireplace do not light up that first fire without have the chimney cleaned and inspected and be certain the fire is out before leaving the house or going to sleep. Be sure your Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are functioning properly and the batteries are changed.
Keep your live Christmas tree watered and visit

Wishing all our residents a safe and happy holiday season!
