It's Membership Renewal Time: What Has MAFP Done for You Lately?
MAFP and the American Academy are encouraging you to renew your membership now. What have we done for you, our members, lately? We've been:
  • taking a stand on proposed rule changes by the State Board of Medical Licensure, and making sure board members heard our voice
  • gearing up for our messaging for next year's legislative session including issues on immunization, scope and Medicaid reimbursement
  • recruiting medical students to join family medicine by visiting medical schools and promoting the profession
  • notifying the family medicine community about important issues affecting the industry and encouraging involvement
  • helping members individually with CME reporting, Transition 2 Practice and other continuing educational needs
  • growing our Academy by conducting a membership drive
Remit your dues today by visiting the AAFP website, through Quick Pay, or by calling the AAFP at 800.274.2237. Your MAFP membership is truly appreciated!
Membership Directory to be Online;
Make Sure to Update Your Info
Members received e-mails and faxes this week about updating their information for the MAFP Membership Directory, scheduled to be released in January. Per the recommendation of the Public Awareness Committee, the publication will be offered ONLINE, with printed copies available for a fee.

Each member was sent a personalized message showing what membership and contact information is currently on file. Members are responsible for letting us know any changes that need to be made. Email Membership Director Claire Rome if you have any questions or missed the message from us. Deadline to respond is December 15.

Scope, Medicaid Expected Issues During State Legislative Session
The 2018 legislative session will begin January 2 at noon. This is the third year of the four-year term and is set to last 90 days. Sine Die is currently scheduled for Sunday, April 1.

The MAFP Legislative Committee remains committed to protecting your patients and your interests at the Capitol. Each year we review over a thousand bills and track hundreds that relate to healthcare issues. We expect to again see a push to expand various scopes of practice and to weaken Mississippi's immunization laws. In 2018, the legislature will also review what's known as the Medicaid technical amendments bill which dictates how Medicaid operates.

There will be several new faces in the legislature as a result of special elections held to replace Senate and House members who have retired or were elected to another public office. Prior to January, we encourage you to make contact with your Senator and Representative and let them know that you appreciate their commitment to protecting the public health of Mississippians.

Please make your plans now to attend the MAFP Capitol Day on March 7 and donate to the FAM DOC PAC. We are expecting a very busy 2018 session and will need your help to ensure the voice of family medicine is heard.

Think of MAFPF For Year-End Giving
It's year-end giving time. Please consider giving to the MAFP Foundation as part of your year-end giving. Your contribution goes to scholarships, outreach programs, and increasing awareness of family physicians statewide. We need your support. Donate today!

2018 Conference Dates Announced
MAFP's three big conferences for 2018 will visit three states in 2018, staying in Jackson for Spring, returning to Florida in July and making the trip north to Tennessee in September. Mark your calendars:
  • Spring Conference - April 20-22 in Jackson
  • Annual Meeting - July 21-25 at Baytowne Conference Center in Sandestin, FL
  • Fall Conference - September 21-23 at Pickwick Landing State Park in Pickwick, TN

Mississippi Groups Send Members of Congress Letters Regarding FDA
MAFP was one of 10 local organizations who sent U.S. Senate and House appropriations committee leaders requests for the upcoming budget year, including Mississippi's Sen. Thad Cochran, Appropriations Chair. AAFP also participated in sending a letter from national organizations.

The letters  specifically requested that two "policy riders" be left out of the omnibus deal when finalizing the budget. The  riders on the Food and Drug Administration appropriation would have exempted "large and premium cigars" from FDA oversight, and would have changed a "grandfather date" in order to exempt e-cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products from an important FDA product review requirement.  For more information on the requests, see the links below.

Increase Your Practice's Rate of
Teen Vaccination With New Materials
AAFP has updated its Highlight on Vaccinations 4 Teens Online Resource Kit with new materials. The kit was developed to help you educate teen patients and their families about the importance of receiving CDC-recommended vaccinations. On the site, you can access educational materials for your office staff and teen patients and their families, including videos, appointment reminders, personal testimonials and digital content. The program features a robust library, now updated with new 2016 statistics from the National Immunization Survey (NIS) - Teen data recently released.

Integrating Tobacco Cessation into Electronic Health Records
AAFP supports including a smoking cessation template that prompts providers to collect information on all areas of tobacco use. In fact, incentives are available to eligible professionals who adopt certified EHR technology, and can demonstrate that they are meaningful users of the technology. Click here to learn  more.
