Book Reviews
Strong to the Bone
By Jon Land
Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz
It doesn't get any better than this. A strong female protagonist, a Texas Ranger, an outlaw-turned- good- guy, flash-backs to World War II-era, complete with Nazi war criminals and a ghost thrown in for good measure! Jon Land's books are informative, entertaining and suspenseful. And Strong to the Bone holds true to that description.
In 1944, Texas Ranger Jim Strong investigates an escaped prisoner and the triple murder left behind inside a Nazi POW camp in Texas.
Present day:  His daughter, fifth generation Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong, pursues the killer her father never caught and a conspiracy reaching from that Nazi POW camp to a modern-day neo-Nazi gang.
Armand Fisker has taken over an abandoned town where he is building an army of neo-Nazis, robot terrorists and a deadly bio-weapon. Caitlin and her lover, former outlaw Cort Wesley Masters, enter into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse as they hunt down Fisker and his gang.
Meanwhile, Caitlin investigates a rape case, bringing back horrible memories of the time she was raped at a college party. The rapist was never found - until now.
Jon Land shows his unique talent as he takes us on an adventure back through time, blending past and present into a blockbuster of a story!

Two Kinds of Truth
By Michael Connelly
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Harry Bosch, retired from the LAPD, is unofficially working at the tiny San Fernando police department.   He investigates cold cases from an unused jail cell and occasionally helps out on current cases. Two Kinds of Truth opens with Harry riding along on a robbery/murder case in a family-owned pharmacy. The case opens the door to an organized painkiller crime ring. Harry goes undercover to penetrate the operation.
At the same time, an old case from Harry's past at the LAPD returns to haunt him. Harry was the lead detective on a case that put the murderer behind bars for life. The convict is now claiming that Harry planted evidence and framed him for the murder. Harry knows that he did not plant the evidence, but proving it will be difficult.
Harry is mostly on his own. He has no official access to the old and new case materials. Unofficial access is limited since given his stormy departure, he has few friends left at the LAPD who are willing to help him. If indeed a "frame" is proven, every case that Harry worked will be questioned. It is crucial for Harry to reconfirm the conviction and clear his name.
Two Kinds of Truth is #20 in the Harry Bosch series. Mr. Connelly's debut was the terrific
Black Echo in 1992, winner of the MWA Edgar for Best First. The Bosch series is one of the finest in the mystery/thriller genre. The books are well written, the stories interesting, the dialog, place and investigation techniques authentic.
The best part is the characters, led by Bosch and a cast of supporting characters. One would expect considerable character development in a series that spans 25 years. But Mr. Connelly delivers something more: the ability of the reader to view the story, actions and motivations through Harry Bosch's eyes. Harry is imperfect, but has a very definite moral line. With Two Kinds of Truth,  this reader finally realized that the magic is sharing the view from Harry's head.
Every book is a fresh story. All are highly recommended. And just in case you missed it this summer, check out Mr. Connelly's newest character, Renee Ballard in The Late Show.
