Walk the Line
Scripture
By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.
Hebrews 11:3 (NASB)

For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what was promised.
Hebrews 10:36 (NASB)

And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.   Hebrews 11:39,40 (NASB)

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world - our faith.
1 John 5:4 (NASB)

Walk the Line

"We are all travelers in this world.  From the sweet grass to the packing house, birth till death, we travel between the eternities." - Bill Crowder, quoting TV cowboy Prentice Ritter, Our Daily Bread, February 21, 2008.

Our experience of eternity past started in the heart and mind of God.  Isaiah 44:2: "I am your Creator, you were in my care even before you were born."

Our walk on earth, in eternity past, began some 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago, give or take a few, for most of us!

The average time we have here on earth is 70+ years, then we move on to eternity future.

Our time is indeed short on the timeline between eternities - eternity past and eternity future.

James writes, "What is your life?  You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes" James 4:4 (NIV).

We use the phrase, "Time marches on."  The question, as time quickly passes, is how are we walking on the line?

Dear friends, let us covenant before man and God that our "time on the line" will follow this paraphrase of Titus 2:7, 8: "Be an example by doing good deeds.  Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Let your teaching be correct."

Let us learn much from those in the past.

Noah built an ark to save the human race and animals from complete destruction.

Abraham left his home seeking his inheritance from God.  He provided the chosen seed through whom the Messiah would be born.

David was promised by God "I will establish your line forever" Psalm 89:4a.

If there is a word or deed we need to do while we still are on the line between eternities, let us do so now.

Spurgeon states in Morning and Evening, "You may but speak a word to a child, and in that child there may be slumbering a noble heart which shall stir the Christian church in years to come" (101).

Hebrews 11 serves as our textbook on the journey of life.  One day faith will turn to sight and we will step off "the line" into our heavenly home with our heavenly Father.  Let us be preparing for that time in eternity future with the way in which we live as we walk the line in eternity present.

   Q uotes

The Beatles released their album
Rubber Soul in December 1965 and sang out their existentialism with compelling power for my generation.  Perhaps it was clearest in John Lennon's "Nowhere Man."

He's a real nowhere man
Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans
For nobody
Doesn't have a point of view
Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Don't Waste Your Life by John Piper

But whom does God use to accomplish his plans and purposes?  The last time I read the Bible, God did not use perfect people.  Aside from Jesus, not one perfect person appears in all of Scripture.  God worked with common, ordinary people.  He worked with those who had blown it-those who could not cope or manage their lives on their own, those who depended totally on him for the competence and wherewithal to survive, those who were weak and looking to God for strength.  God did not use self-righteous religious leaders.  He used the broken, the hurting, and the humble.  He raised them up and gave them all they needed to succeed.  And he is doing the same thing with us today.

In Every Pew Sits A Broken Heart by Ruth Graham

An old theologian once said, "Who chides a servant for taking away the first course of a feast when the second consists of far greater delicacies?"  Who then can regret that this present world passes away when he sees that an eternal world of joy is coming?  The first course is race, but the second is glory, and that is as much better as the fruit is better than the blossom.

Heaven
by Randy Alcorn

So, Father, open our minds, enlarge our minds,
fill our minds, transform our minds,
so that we think Your thoughts after You.
Incline our hearts to Your word,
and not to getting gain.
Have mercy on us in our
foolish addictions to things
that dull us to the delights
of knowing You in Your Word.
You have multiplied, O LORD our God,
Your wondrous thoughts toward us.
Your thoughts are very deep!
All praise and honor to You!
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Prayer: Lord, I am living by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Sing with me,
My Faith Has Found a Resting Place :

My faith has found a resting place, Not in device or creed;
I trust the Everliving One, His wounds for me shall plead.

Enough for me that Jesus saves, This ends my fear and doubt;
A sinful soul, I come to Him, He'll never cast me out.

My heart is leaning on the Word, The written Word of God,
Salvation by my Savior's name, Salvation through His blood.

My great Physician heals the sick, The lost He came to save;
For me His precious blood He shed, For me His life He gave.
Refrain
I need no other argument, I need no other plea,
It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me.
Faith in Jesus,
