Moreno Valley Attracts International Athletes to Compete in Cyclocross

Cyclists from all over the world gathered in Moreno Valley to participate in a weekend-long extreme cycling competition. Moreno Valley's MoVal CX Challenge is one of only two Cyclocross events in California sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the international governing body of cycling.
Over 100 national and international athletes competed in the MoVal CX Challenge held on November 18th through 19th at March Field Park.
This is the first Moreno Valley Cyclocross that featured internationally-sanctioned races for the nation’s top junior and professional cyclists.
Cyclocross is a combination of mountain biking, road cycling, and steeplechase, as racers dismount and carry their bicycles through various obstacles. Competitors in this year's event displayed an unbelievable amount of strength and endurance as they embarked on a two-plus mile course that crossed grass, dirt, gravel, and pavement. This extreme sport challenged competitors from start to finish as athletes traversed obstacles including stairs, sand, hills, hurdles, pits, and ramps.
Elite Women, Elite Men, U23 (ages 19-22) and Junior Men competed for international ranking points. This year's UCI Winners are:
- National Champion Tobin Ortenblad (Santa Cruz, CA) - Elite Men,
- French National Champion Caroline Mani (Boulder, CO) - Elite Women,
- Mountain Bike National Champion Christopher Blevins (San Luis Obispo, CA)
This event was made possible through a collaborative effort between Parks and Community Services, Public Works, SoCalCross, and a major funding contribution from the Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG) BEYOND initiative.

Moreno Valley Fire Department Provides Holiday Tree Safety Tips
|
Many Moreno Valley residents celebrate the holiday season by bringing live trees into their homes. Keeping the community safe is the top priority of the Moreno Valley Fire Department.
Live trees tend to dry out over time and can become dangerous fire hazards. Between 2009-2013, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 210 home fires that started as a result of dry Christmas trees. These fires caused several deaths and injuries, as well as over $70 million in direct property damage.
The following tips are provided to ensure a safe holiday season:
- Properly water and care for your tree
- Keep trees securely upright in a stand to prevent tip over
- Keep your tree away from all heat sources including candles, electrical outlets, radiators, heaters, and fireplaces
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections
- Connect no more than three strands of string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs
- Read manufacturer’s instructions when connecting LED strands
- Unplug tree lights before leaving your home or before going to bed
- Ensure that artificial trees are labeled “fire retardant”
- Dispose of your tree promptly after the holiday season with your waste care provider or at an appropriate recycling center

Office of Emergency Management Promotes a Healthy Holiday Season
|
Moreno Valley's Office of Emergency Management would like to remind residents that influenza (flu) viruses change constantly. It is not unusual for new flu viruses to appear each year. The timing of influenza (flu) is unpredictable and can vary from season to season. Flu activity most commonly peaks in the U.S. between December and February. However, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this virus. The seasonal flu vaccine is designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will cause the most illness during a particular flu season. Doctor's reccomend vaccination as soon as the flu vaccine becomes available. October is the ideal time to ensure the protection of as many people as possible before flu season begins.
Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk for serious flu complications, and their close contacts. Children between six months and eight years of age may need two doses of flu vaccine to be protected from the flu. Children younger than six months are at higher risk of serious flu complications but are too young to get a flu vaccine. Because of this, safeguarding them from flu is especially important. If you live with or care for an infant younger than six months of age, you should get a flu vaccine to help protect them from flu.
In addition to getting vaccinated, you and your loved ones can take everyday preventive actions such as washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school and keep a safe distance from others to prevent spreading influenza.

MoVal Residents Encouraged to Stay Safe and Warm this Winter

There is something very soothing about curling up with a good book by the fireplace during the winter months. However, heating equipment can be very dangerous. With a few simple safety precautions, you can prevent most heating fires from occurring. Here is how you can keep warm and safe this winter:
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, such as the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater
- Establish a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters
- Never use your kitchen oven or stove to heat your home
- Hire a qualified professional install space heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions
- Hire a qualified professional to clean and inspect heating equipment and chimneys annually
- Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed
- Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer for fuel burning space heaters
- Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container and stored a safe distance away from your home
- Test smoke alarms monthly
- Smoke detector batteries should be changed twice annually during the time change
- Install and maintain carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning

Moreno Valley Fire Department Offers
Chimney Maintenance and
Fire Prevention Tips
|
The maintenance of your chimney will make a big difference in the safety and operation of your fireplace. Chimney fires are common and highly dangerous. Chimney fires are mainly caused by tar build-up.
- Maintain a safe perimeter and keep all tree limbs and other objects at least 10 feet from the top of your chimney
- Instruct your family on the fireplace, furnace, and stove safety practices
- Retrofit a chimney cap on your existing chimney if you don't have one
- Chimney caps should be metal with 1/2 to 3/8 openings
- Chimney caps keep leaves and animals out of your chimney and can prevent dangerous obstructions
- Use your fireplace or other warming devices per the manufacturer's instructions
- Use appropriate fuel and If you have doubts about a particular fuel, err on the side of caution
- Greenwood dismantled furniture, and other questionable materials are not safe fuel choices
- Never put wood in a non-wood burning stove
- Build fires correctly by adding kindling or fire-logs in the back of the grate and support them, so they do not slip
- Make sure your fireplace has a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room
- Clear the hearth or areas surrounding your heating device
- Never keep old rags, newspaper, furniture or other objects near your stove, furnace or fireplace
- Do not leave fires unattended
