Mayor Carl Suraci and the Township Committee honored Hillsborough Veterans at the 8th annual Veterans Day Ceremony.

, Air Force Veteran and Hillsborough resident who served during the Vietnam Conflict at Kadena Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan as a Fuel Specialist, was the Military guest speaker.
After the outdoor ceremony, Veterans followed a candlelit pathway back into the Peter J. Biondi Building for a reception. Local Girl Scouts, participating in the Veteran outreach "Interview a Hero" program sponsored by Empower Somerset, took part in the day's events.

Hillsborough P.B.A Collects Donations for Hillsborough's Community Assistance Network (C.A.N) by "Stuffing a Bus"
Last month, the Hillsborough P.B.A. held their "Stuff the Bus" event to help stock the Hillsborough Township Community Assistance Network. Residents dropped donations off at the Shop Rite parking lot to literally stuff a bus w
ith nonperishable food items and toiletries to help stock the C.A.N. by the holidays so that everyone in the Hillsborough community has all of their necessities.

Advanced Eyecare & Vision Gallery Celebrates 25th Anniversary
At the November 8th Township Committee Meeting, Advanced Eyecare & Vision Gallery was presented with a certificate recognizing their 25 years in Hillsborough.
Advanced Eyecare opened in Hillsborough in 1992 and has been
providing quality vision care products and personalized optometric services to their Hillsborough patients for the last 25 years.
On behalf of Advanced Eyecare & Vision Gallery, Dr. Larry Katz was presented with a certicate by Mayor Carl Suraci.

Tickets Now Available for NJ Devils' "My Town" Hillsborough Night
NJ Devils vs Philadelphia Flyers, Jan. 13th
The "My Town" Series Program now in it's 4th year highlights New Jersey towns during National Hockey League games played at the Prudential Center in Newark. The New Jersey Devils tested the program during the 2013-2014 National Hockey League season with 5 New Jersey towns as part of their pilot program. The success of the initial program, lead to an expanded program during the 2014-2015 season and will continue with enthusiasm this season.
This is a great event open to all ages! Tickets and Group Packages will be on sale for township residents who would like to attend. The Hillsborough Police Department will present the Honor Guard at the beginning of the game. Hillsborough Township will be recognized throughout the game, including a group welcome on the scoreboard. Following the game, Hillsborough residents will be invited to the ice for a post-game photo! In addition, January 13th is Chico Resch mini stick night honoring former Devil and current color commentator Glenn "Chico" Resch. The first 9,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative mini stick.

What Township Residents Can Do with Fall Leaves
Keep Your Lawn Healthy & Green by Cutting and Leaving it!
With Autumn in full swing, the leaves have begun to fall and cover your lawn. Hillsborough Township encourages you to help the Sustainable Hillsborough initiative by Cutting and Leaving It. Instead of disposing of your lawn clippings and leaves, try leaving your grass clipping on your lawn. This practice helps keep your lawn healthy and green. In addition, instead of placing leaves at the bottom of your driveway, place them in a compost heap in your yard. Compost piles are easy and cheap to construct and help to reduce Hillsborough's waste. For more information about Cut and Leave It, read the brochure on the township website.
"If you currently recycle your lawn clippings and leaves by staging them for pick-up through the Hillsborough Public Works Department leaf pick-up program, you are already helping to avoid air pollution and wasted resources. However, you can do more by reducing waste at the source. Leave the grass clippings on your lawn when you mow, compost your leaves, and let nature do the recycling for you," stated Deputy Mayor McCauley.
The Hillsborough Public Works Department will be running their annual leaf pick-up program starting in November.

On Saturday, November 4th, Scrap U & Artistry Too, celebrated its one year anniversary with an open house and a ribbon cutting. The open house included food, face painting and giveaways. Explore Your Library's Collections Easier, Faster, and with More Relevant Results Beginning December 5
SCLSNJ's ten branches to be closed December 2, 3, and 4 for a necessary upgrade; eCollections available virtually during closure
A big change is coming to the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) - a change that has been almost twenty years in the making. SCLSNJ will be upgrading their checkout and catalog system to The Library Corporations CarlX product, live for patron access beginning December 5.
"We think patrons are really going to love the new catalog system," said SCLSNJ Director of Operations Lynn Hoffman. "People who are accustomed to shopping for products online will find it has a very familiar feel. And our Library power users will find a host of new features that will make them even better at searching the catalog."
All SCLSNJ branches will be closed December 2, 3 and 4 for installation of the System's new checkout and catalog system.

Award-Nominated Local Author to Participate in Book Talk at SCLSNJ's Hillsborough Library Branch
Explore the legacy of Doris Duke with SCLSNJ and Hillsborough Author Rikki Lyn Hauss
Hillsborough resident and author, Rikki Lyn Hauss, will be giving a book talk at SCLSNJ's Hillsborough Library branch, located at 379 South Branch Road in Hillsborough, on
December 11 from 7-8:30 p.m.
"I was driven to become an author as a response to a need. When I saw how people who lived and worked on the Duke Estate were being turned away, I saw their stories left untold. These amazing residents never had a good venue to speak their mind and have their voices heard, and I wanted to give them a fair chance at writing their histories into Somerset County," said Hauss.
"Doris Duke and her father JB (James Buchanan) were staples of this community and impacted thousands of lives with their philanthropy, but their personal lives were seldom shared with anyone besides those who were close to home. It became my mission to be the venue of their memoirs and to promote the Duke history as it continues to unfold in our cherished locality."
Hauss's new book, which can be found in SCLSNJ's collection, explores local history by using the words of Somerset County residents - past and present.

Cold Weather Is On Its Way - And So Are Winter Heating Bills
Help is available now
For those who need help paying their heating bills, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)/Universal Service Fund (USF) is available to eligible customers beginning October 1, 2017. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to help low-income families and individuals meet home heating and medically necessary cooling costs. To qualify for LIHEAP, you must be responsible for home heating or cooling costs, either directly or included in the rent.
When you apply for LIHEAP, you automatically apply for the Universal Service Fund Program (USF). If you are eligible, USF can lower the amount you pay for
gas and electricity.
LIHEAP funds are limited.

Rotary Club Seeks Volunteers for Operation Shoebox
The Rotary Club of Hillsborough needs hundreds of community volunteers
this Saturday to help pack 1500 boxes of toiletries and snacks for troops serving abroad. This annual event hosted by The Rotary Club of Hillsborough on behalf of Operation Shoebox brings together young and old to ensure our troops aren't forgotten at this special time of year.

Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) invites customers to celebrate the holiday season by entering its fifth annual "Merry & Bright" Holiday Lights Photo Contest.
Participants can enter by submitting a photo of their home's outdoor holiday light display on the
JCP&L Facebook page from Monday, Nov. 27 to Friday, Dec. 15. Up to 10 finalists will be selected by JCP&L based on criteria such as creativity and number of lights. Finalists' photos will be posted on Facebook for public voting from Monday, Dec. 18 to Friday, Dec. 22.
The grand prize winner will receive a $200 Visa® gift card and a set of LED holiday lights controlled by a mobile app. The runner up will receive a $100 gift card.
More information, including complete contest rules, will be posted to the
JCP&L Facebook page. The "Merry & Bright" contest is open only to JCP&L customers who are legal residents of New Jersey and who are at least 18 years of age. Only one entry per household will be accepted. Employees and family members of FirstEnergy, JCP&L or its advertising agency are not eligible.

2018 Recycling Schedule Coming to Your Mailbox
Somerset County's 2018 recycling schedule, how-to guide and calendar stickers are being direct-mailed to all county households this year.
Previously, the annual schedule packets were dropped off to households that placed their recycling buckets at the curb during the first half of December.
In an effort to streamline the process and reach more residents, recycling officials opted for the direct-mail approach this year.

What Secrets are Hidden in Your Signature?
Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites Somerset County residents age 60 and above to attend a free program titled, "Signature Analysis for Fun."
The presentation by Terry Antoniewicz, who has over 45 years of experience in analyzing handwriting, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge, located at 202 Mt. Airy Road on the VNA Campus.
Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite writing instruments and samples of unlined paper to the center. During the program, Antoniewicz will explain the hidden messages in each stroke of the pen and discuss fun aspects of your personal signature.

December Program Schedule for County-operated Senior Centers
The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have announced the December program schedule. All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed.
This month, all centers will be closed on Dec. 14 (in-service day), 25 and 26.
All Somerset County-operated senior centers offer a nutritionally balanced lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée and a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations before 10 a.m., at least one business day in advance. Why not invite a friend or neighbor to join you for lunch! Or come earlier in the day and enjoy one of the center's many programs.
