"The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him." ~ Pslam 37:23
Junior Class Step-Up Mass

On Wednesday, the Junior Class celebrated a very special Mass in the Chapel with family in attendance.  The Step Up Mass represents their transition to being an upperclassmen and all the responsibilities that come with that designation.  The underclassmen now look up to them as role models and leaders on our campus.  How they conduct themselves on campus and in the classroom matters.  How they stand in their faith and show their love for the Lord matters. How they treat each other, their families, and their friends matter.  Fr. John from OLG was the celebrant at Mass and he spoke to them about the importance of "stepping up" for God.  He blessed all the them, their Garces pins, and their class rings.  Every junior was called up, pinned by a current staff member who is also an alumnus.  The pins are the Garces crest and every junior received one to to remind them they are part of the Garces family and we are part of them. Afterwards, the students and families enjoyed a reception hosted by the Garces Parent Club.
Congratulations Cory Chianello and Catherine Macias

Congratulations to Cory Chianello and Catherine Macias on being selected to participate in the 2018 Youth Leadership Bakersfield class.  The program links students to community leaders, business issues and career opportunities and focuses on a wide range of local interests, including agriculture, arts and culture, criminal justice, energy, health and human services and leadership and ethics.
Volleyball Senior All-Stars

Congratulations to our seniors who were selected to play in the KHSD Volleyball Senior All-Star Games!  The seniors selected were Emily Demos, McKenzie Miller, Priscilla Miranda, Alia Lidgett, Molly Ming and Emily Demler.  Not only was Emily Demler an All-Star - she was the MVP of the the first match between the Navy and the Red teams. Check out her trophy! Congrats Lady Rams!
Hometown All-Stars

Congratulations to our Garces Rams who were selected by Hometown Sports as football All-Stars.  They were honored at a special filming on Thursday night.  The show will air on Sunday night at 5:00 PM on FOX.  The All-Stars are Emmanuel Castro, Isaac Jimenez, Nick Sill, LeBrevon Austin, Isaiah Martin, Zach Hebbard, Bryan Pantoja, and Peter Delis.
Congratulations Isaiah Martin
Hometown Sports Athlete of the Year!

Congratulations to Garces Ram Isaiah Martin on being selected by Hometown Sports as "Athlete of the Year" at the Hometown Sports All-Stars program filming on Thursday night. It is quite an honor to be recognized by local KBAK-TV sports broadcasters Gregg Kerr and Jon Doss, along with their staff, as a top football athlete in all of Kern County.

Congratulations Isaiah.  It has been a pleasure to watch you play four years of varsity football as a Garces Ram.

Congratulations Peter Delis!
Hometown Sports Game Saving Play of the Year

Congratulations to Peter Delis who received a trophy and a $500 scholarship for his game winning field goal against BHS!  It was the first time in 10 years that Garces beat BHS.  And even more impressive was that the team was 0-5 coming into the game.  While the entire team played great, it was Peter's ability to focus under pressure and kick the ball through the uprights when it mattered most that got the 'W" for the Rams.  As a result, Peter was honored by Hometown Sports with a Game Saving Play of the Year trophy.  Congratulations Peter!

Padre Garces statue unveiled 68 years ago this week

The statue of Padre Francisco Garces that stands at the entrance to the campus was unveiled on November 27, 1949.  It was commissioned by Kern County Historical Society president, Dr. P.N. Root and donated by nationally renowned sculptor John Palo Kangas, who also created the statue at the downtown Garces Circle.

The dedication ceremony was held at the statue's original curbside location in front of the school (It was moved to its present site when the parking lot was redesigned in 2004).  Presiding that day were Kern County Sheriff, John Loustalot, and County Superintendent of Schools, Jesse Stockton.  Monsignor William MacLaughlin blessed the statue during the ceremony.

Padre Garces was the first European to explore the San Joaquin Valley on his historic trek to spread his Catholic faith.  On May 8, 1776 (weeks before the signing of the Declaration of Independence) he camped nearby and described it as a perfect site for a mission.  Centuries later, Garces High School stands as a memorial to his faith and vision, still carrying on his Catholic mission today.

Being Faithful at Garces Booklet

The Garces Parent Club has put together a booklet about the spiritual journey all of our students experience while at Garces.  It includes an overview of all the Theology classes along with how Catholics, and Non-Catholics, can grow in their love for God and practice their Christian values on a daily basis.

The booklet was mailed out to all of our freshmen and transfer families.  If you would like a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Parent Club Moderator  Lou Ann Durrett and she will mail you one or send it home with your student.

You can view the booklet by clicking on the link below:

We are making progress!

Please remember Garces Memorial in your end of year charitable giving.

Update on parent giving:

25 families have given $15,000 of the $106,871 given to date towards our Annual Giving Campaign. Remember every gift makes a difference.

On Wednesday, December 6th we will kick off our 12 Days of Giving event.  Stop by school between 7:30 and 8:30 for a cup of hot cocoa and a Christmas cookie.  You can drop off your donation then (see remittance form link below) or take a pledge card to make a donation on another day.  How about in lieu of a Christmas gift for that person or persons who has everything, you make a donation to Garces Memorial in their name.  We will send them a special card letting them know about your gift in their name.

Lou Ann Durrett
Director of Campus Affairs

The next two weeks will be busy at Garces! We hope to see lots of students in the Collaborative Learning Center during morning break, at lunch, and after school working away and preparing for finals week.  Please know that your student's academic success is of the utmost importance to all of us at Garces Memorial.

Freshmen Parents - for many of you, this is the first time you are going through finals at Garces. Here are some tips to help make sure your child is on track to do their very best their first semester at Garces:

Please go on line and check your student's status in every class.  Make sure all their assignments are turned in or they are making up any missing work.

Have your student check with their teachers to see if there are any extra-credit projects they can complete before finals.

Teachers will start posting study guides for their final exams soon.  Please encourage your student to begin reviewing the study guides once they are posted.

If you have any concerns or questions about your student's grades, please reach out next week to your student's teachers or counselor.

If  your student needs some assistance, or tutoring, it is not too late.  You can email CSF Moderator Mrs. Jennifer Kloock , and she can set them up with a CSF tutor after school.  Or your student can drop in to Mrs. Kloock's classroom any day after school and she will set them up with a tutor.

Winter Sports Parents - it is tournament season at Garces.  Please check the Athletics calendar for early release times and help your student stay on track with his or her assignments. All of our students have access to our quiet rooms in the Collaborative Learning Center if they need to study or work on assignments. Please have your student work with their teachers to make up for any missed class time due to tournament play.

Need to Change a Final Exam Date?
If you need to make arrangements for your student to take finals early, please reach out to Mrs. Sakowski as soon as possible to complete the necessary paperwork.

Finals Schedule:

It's Christmas at Garces!

The Garces Christmas Concert is on Thursday, December 14th in MLH and will be full of the sounds of the season. The Music Department will have cookies and hot cocoa after the concert.

Christmas Week at Garces is December 11th - 15th.  There will be special dress up days.  As an incentive to have as many students participate as possible - the Garces Parent Club will give away one formal bid for the best dressed student each dress up day that week!

Monday, December 11th
Christmas Morning

Tuesday, December 12th
Ugly Sweater Day

Wednesday, December 13th Formal dress with favorite Christmas Socks and Ties

Thursday, December 14th
Flannel Day

Friday, December 15th
Festive Friday - students can wear green, red, dress up as reindeer, Santa, elves, snowmen, etc.

We hope to see you at either the Christmas Mass, the Christmas Concert, or one of the many sporting events over the next couple of weeks.  Look for photos and videos of all our events on our social media accounts.

In closing, I read this quote and thought this sums up one of the many reasons why we are so blessed to have Garces in our community where we can celebrate our love for God everyday, especially at Christmas.

"Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, but there must be no mention of the man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a student asked why it was called Christmas."   ~Ronald Reagan

Wishing you and yours a blessed and joyous Christmas!

In Our Prayers
Dr. Jack Willey

We are sad to report that longtime Garces staff member Dr. Jack Willey passed away on Thanksgiving Day in Washington state where he was living with his family.  Doc Willey was an administrator and Spanish teacher at Garces from 1978 until he retired in 1998.  He was honored with the Bob Carroll service award in 1998.

Despite Doc's seemingly gruff exterior and demanding teaching style he will always be remembered as one of the most devoted teachers in the history of the school.  Generations of Garces students have Dr. Willey stories to tell.  The Garces Family was blessed to have him as one of our own and we mourn his passing.

If speaking Spanish is a requirement to get into heaven, Doc Willey will surely be teaching one of its most demanding classes.
New Pajamas for Christmas

The Karing for Kids Club met and decided that while there are a lot of toy drives, there aren't a lot of pajama drives for children at Christmas. Most of us have fond memories of putting on a new pair of pajamas on Christmas Eve as children. The students thought it would be nice to provide new pajamas to go with the toys that will be collected and distributed through various toy drives.

Karing for Kids will be collecting new pajamas for children ages 6 to 17 who are at the Jamison Center as they are in the most need of our compassion at Christmas.  Depending on the success of the pajama drive, we may also be able to donate to other agencies as well.

Donations can be dropped off in the bin in the Student Center.

The Jamison Children's Center is a 24-hour emergency shelter and protective custody facility, operated by the Human Services Department of Kern County. As the only emergency shelter in Kern County for abused, neglected and exploited children, Jamison Children's Center temporarily houses children who are taken into protective custody by law enforcement agencies or social workers. Children come to Jamison Children's Center from all backgrounds and walks of life.
