School Virtual Reality project in need of old smartphones

Do you have an old smartphone at your house, and aren't sure what to do with it? Consider donating it to Roycemore School! We have obtained several virtual reality (VR) headsets, and are in need of smartphones to use with them. We will not actually use these as phones; they simply need to be able to connect to our wifi to be used with the VR devices. Please contact Beth Shutters if you have any questions, or if you have a smartphone to donate.

Cultivating Selflessness in our Children this Holiday Season

Did you get bombarded with Black Friday emails and other advertising? As we enter into the holiday season it is hard to escape the barrage of consumerism that has been borne out of the December holidays. I remember as a kid looking through the giant Sears catalog at all of the toys and putting my "wish list" together for Santa. Today, our children receive all forms of electronic advertising, making it difficult to not be impacted by the consumerism of the season. One way you can counter that and help promote greater altruism and selflessness within your family is to be intentional about ways you will specifically cultivate a caring ethic for others this season. Have conversations with your family about ways you want to help others this holiday season.

In the Middle School, faculty have been embracing some of the core principles of the "Love & Logic" method of discipline. The father-son team of Charles and Jim Fay has many parenting resources available too--one is the blog on their website at www.loveandlogic.com. In a recent post they list a number of ways parents can encourage more selflessness with their children. Here are highlights of their suggestions from that  November 8th blog:
  • Ensure that children have an attachment foundation of love and trust
  • Teach them to serve you and their family
  • Teach them to look at insides...not just outsides
  • Expect tangible mini acts of service
  • Allow boredom
  • Limit exposure to popular media
  • Community service...as a privilege not a punishment
  • Plenty of time and neurological development

Host families needed beginning second semester!

If you have been considering inviting a student from another country into your home, now's the time! Our partner New Oasis is in immediate need of host families in the Evanston area for two incoming Chinese students. New Oasis shares that the first student is an engaging and easy-going 10th grader interested in studying psychology and playing soccer, and he loves pets. The second is a sweet and confident young lady in the 8th grade who loves PE and math.

New Oasis will provide a stipend, which could be used for enriching activities while the student is living with your family. Sign up by November 30th and receive a $100 gift card. Just go to this page and fill out the host family application. Answer "other" to the question "How did you hear about New Oasis?" and write "Thanksgiving" in the blank to qualify for the gift card.

You may also contact our New Oasis rep Audra Murray at  AMurray@newoasisedu.com if you have any questions about the program.
