Preview Reception on Friday, December 8, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Winter Art Tour
Yourist Studio Gallery is sponsoring host to the Winter Art Tour, which features more than 300 artists at 10 shows in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Tour Passports are available at every participating show. Make Yourist Studio Gallery your first stop on the Tour, pick up a Passport, and get your first Tour stamp. Then visit at least three more Tour shows, stamp your Passport at each one, and enter to win one of 10 prizes made by local artists. You'll find full details on the Tour web site.

2017 Winter Art Tour: largest outside of Art Fair!
Handmade works of art by 300+ local artists await you on the
December 8-10 Winter Art Tour, the second largest show and sale of art in the area outside of the Art Fair. The Winter Art Tour spans 10 diverse shows across Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.
When you take the Tour, you'll experience the best handmade art the area has to offer. You'll also be treated to music, refreshments, creative activities, and artists' demonstrations at many of the shows.
Collect your Passport to the Winter Art Tour at any participating show or download it
here. Then stamp your Passport at four or more shows to become eligible to win one of 10 prizes from local artists.

Studio calendar
Studio Gallery holiday schedule
Here's wishing you happy holidays and a wonderful new year. The studio and gallery will be closed from
Sunday, December 24, through Wednesday, January 3. We will reopen for regular hours on
Thursday, January 4.
Remember, the studio will be unavailable for doing any work with clay during the
Yourist Studio Gallery Annual Holiday Show and Sale from December 8 through December 10. But you are cordially invited to join us at the show.
Reminder to pick up your pots
Bisque ware or glazed pieces remaining on our shelves from November will be discarded on December 23. Please come and collect them now.
Ready, load, fire: cone 10
We've tentatively scheduled one more gas kiln firing this year after the Holiday Show and Sale, so glaze, glaze, glaze! H

Potter's quick tip
How to keep lids from sticking to pots
Q.
What can I do when glazing to make sure the lids don't stick to my lidded pots?
A. There's nothing more disappointing than getting a lidded pot out of a glaze firing only to discover that the lid has stuck immovably to the pot. Here are a couple of clever tips from potter Nancy Gallagher that will help you make sure this doesn't happen to you again.
Heads up: At the end of the video, Gallagher misspeaks when she says she adds alumina to her glaze. She adds it to her
wax, as correctly shown in the caption.

Finland 100:
The Cranbrook Connection
This exhibition examines the "profound influence" Finland "has had on the development of the arts in America." Of particular interest to potters are the works of Maija Grotell, former visiting artist and head of ceramics at Cranbrook.
Visitors to this exhibition will also see treasures by Eliel Saarinen, his wife Loja, and his children, Eero and Pipsan, as well as other Finnish artists associated with Cranbrook. Get more information about the exhibition here.

The Art of Containment: Vessels From the Sidney Swidler Collection
The Flint Institute of Arts is exhibiting more than 100 pieces of ceramics that architect and collector Sidney Swidler donated to the FIA this year from his sizeable collection.
"The Swidler Collection of ceramics encompasses pieces by ceramicists working predominantly with the vessel form. Some consider the straightforward functionality of a bowl or pot while others consider the cultural or social implications of the vessel."
The vessel at left is by ceramic artist William Kidd. See more of his astonishing pieces here.

Dry throwing a bowl
Ayumi Horie has been dry throwing bowls, dishes, and plates-with
no water-for more than 20 years She explains that she likes using this technique, which she developed as an undergraduate at Alfred University, because it allows her "to preserve the inherent textures in clay that I love-the stretching, cracking, and sagging." Dry throwing also enables her to "work more spontaneously and intuitively because I don't have to wait for the clay to dry out quite so long."
