Potter's quick tip
How to keep lids from sticking to pots

Q.
What can I do when glazing to make sure the lids don't stick to my lidded pots?

A. There's nothing more disappointing than getting a lidded pot out of a glaze firing only to discover that the lid has stuck immovably to the pot. Here are a couple of clever tips from potter Nancy Gallagher that will help you make sure this doesn't happen to you again.

Heads up: At the end of the video, Gallagher misspeaks when she says she adds alumina to her glaze. She adds it to her wax, as correctly shown in the caption.

You can visit Gallagher's web site here.

Readers, if you have a burning pottery question for Kay, ask away . We'd like to know what you want to know.

Resources for potters
A new source for creative ideas in clay, plus a deal

ClayCraft Issue 1 Cover
Here's something to put on your holiday wish list, or to treat yourself to for the holidays. It's a brand new pottery magazine from the UK. ClayCraft was inspired by The Great Pottery Throwdown, a popular TV show that has sparked a renewed interest in ceramics in the UK.

ClayCraft's selling line is "Pinch, Coil, Slab and Throw," and the magazine does an outstanding job of covering all those bases. Each issue is packed with ceramics projects that are clearly explained and well illustrated with photographs. Some offer templates as well. There are also articles on surface decoration, glazing, tools and equipment, firing, making molds, and much more. And you'll meet practicing potters, visit pottery studios, and learn about pottery history. ClayCraft is a genuine treat for potters. No matter your skill level-from beginner to professional-you'll find useful information here.

Best of all, ClayCraft's publisher has kindly offered our newsletter readers a special subscription price, which is available here. (You'll know you're on the right page if the Order Delivered To line says North America.) Visit the ClayCraft web site to learn more about the magazine and see a sampling of past articles.

Dry throwing a bowl

Ayumi Horie has been dry throwing bowls, dishes, and plates-with no water-for more than 20 years She explains that she likes using this technique, which she developed as an undergraduate at Alfred University, because it allows her "to preserve the inherent textures in clay that I love-the stretching, cracking, and sagging." Dry throwing also enables her to "work more spontaneously and intuitively because I don't have to wait for the clay to dry out quite so long."

Don't miss the hilarious shot of Horie's puzzled-looking dog in this 3-minute video.

Read more about Horie here and see a selection of her work here.

Mr. Rogers makes pottery

To celebrate the holidays, we're giving you not one but two delightful videos of Fred Rogers learning to make pottery.

In the first video, potter Dolly Naranjo, member of a famed family of artists from Santa Clara Pueblo, shows Mr. Rogers how to hand build. Read more about the Naranjo family and their artistic legacy here.

In the second video, potter Bill Strickland guides Mr. Rogers as he tries his hand at the wheel.
Strickland is founder of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, which began as an after-school arts program in inner-city Philadelphia. Discover Strickland's inspiring story here.

We hope you enjoy our holiday treats for you.

The trials of a young pottery teacher

Oops, where is The Great Pottery Throw Down? Unfortunately, Season 2 episodes on YouTube have been blocked on copyright grounds. We'll resume linking to them if and when they become available.

Meanwhile, we hope you'll enjoy this brief, charming video of Zalla, age 10, teaching her sister Zoey, age 5, how to throw on the wheel. Teaching pottery can be a tough job, especially when your student is your sister and she's only 5.
