martinwolf  Executive Perspective
Peter Jackson, Bluescape

The latest issue of Executive Perspective features Peter Jackson, CEO and president of visual collaboration software company Bluescape. With more than two decades of experience growing innovative SaaS companies,  Peter  has held several positions as chief executive. Prior  to joining Bluescape, Peter was CEO and co-founder of Ziploop, a smart wallet for mobile receipts and rewards. Earlier on in his career, he founded and grew two companies, Granite Systems and Intraware, leading them through acquisition and IPO, respectively. He went on to found and lead several other companies to successful exits.

 Peter Jackson
In this interview, Peter discusses what initially drew him to IT and how he has been able to thereafter adjust to the industry's rapid transformations. Recalling his first foray into the distribution world, and later into software, Peter discusses how technology "tends to leapfrog or become passe." With regard to these shifts, Peter shares the challenges he has faced as a leader who has had to be "brutally honest" in the face of shrinking market demands. Stressing the need to be realistic about the company's top line and the need to "migrate to where the trends are moving," Peter concludes that companies will have to choose between one of two options: pivot or go to outside services for an objective outlook on the company, which most often means M&A.

Later on, Peter details how his journey in eliminating software inefficiencies has led him to Bluescape today, where his interest has landed on the various facets of supply and collaboration software. Looking at major companies' ability to innovate via collaboration, Peter envisions a future technological emphasis on touch screens and direct interactions. In addition to discussing the growth of display technology, Peter shares his thoughts on the challenges of the IPO market, the future of the digital wallet space and the developments of SaaS. Concluding the interview with advice to "assess your company like you would the machinery of a factory," Peter shares one of the hardest but most valuable lessons he has learned throughout his career.
