December 2017
   Our heartfelt thanks...
During the holiday season, we often pause and reflect on the year as it comes to a close - what went well, what didn't; achievements and losses.  Though rescue is often a difficult job, the reward of finding forever homes for dogs in need makes the struggle worthwhile.

We are lucky to have so many amazing volunteers throughout our organization.  Each of you play an integral role in the success of MABTR.  One especially critical role in each of our success stories is the role of foster families.  You are the ones who take these dogs in, often sight unseen with little to sometimes no information about the dog's past.  You are the ones who get to know them, who show them affection (sometimes for the first time in their lives), who nurture them and teach them.  You are the ones who make that initial connection and then tell their stories to potential adopters.  You paint the picture and set the stage for these dogs to find their future homes.

Thank you all for selflessly opening your homes to these animals.

If you or someone you know may be interested in joining our foster family network, please visit our website here.

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!!!

MABTR Alumni - Max

Summer of 2015 was a tough time in our house.  We said goodbye to the last of our three Bostons in July that year - we had lost one only 6 weeks prior, and another a year prior to that.  So in 13 short months, we lost all of our babies.  We were completely devastated.

I didn't think I could bear getting another dog in the near future.  But after coming home from work to a quiet empty house for a few weeks, I couldn't bear  not having a dog in the house any longer.  Having adopted from MABTR in the past, naturally the first place I looked was the MABTR website.

Being a fairly frequent flyer on the website, I had seen  Max before.  Actually, he had been on the site for quite some time.  He was hard to place because he couldn't be in a home with other dogs, cats, or small children.  Which meant, he was perfect for us!

It's been a little over two years since Max joined our family.  He is such an amazing dog.   And of course, his being an "only child" means he is completely spoiled rotten!   He's sweet, smart, playful, cuddly... in short, he was the perfect dog for us at the perfect time.

Thank you, MABTR, for helping us find Max, and for helping Max rescue us. - Laurie S.
Adoptable Dog of the Month

Hi, my name is  Sammy (Samantha).  I am 11 years old and weigh 27 pounds.  I need a new home because I was surrendered by my owners because they could not housetrain me, but then I was not crated when left alone.  I am being fostered in Lakewood, CO.

I love checking out the backyard, snuggling on the couch while my humans watch tv, and taking walks!  I have two Boston buddies at my foster mom's house as well as a cat, and I get along with everyone.  I'm a sweet girl who is looking for my forever family - could it be you?

~~Eligible for the Golden Paws Program!!!~~
Adopters aged 60+ yrs who adopt a dog 7 yrs and older get
$50 off the adoption fee!!!

Ask Jennifer

Q:  My dog has clean teeth per the vet, yet his breath is horrid.  Why is that?

A:  First, make sure that the teeth are looked at by a vet as there could be a rotten tooth, exposed roots which you personally cannot see or diagnose, or the teeth are in need of a cleaning.  If all is good then more likely the smell is coming from his stomach. Enzymes are then needed. A great product is Purina FortiFlora. You can find it online or at your local vet. Once packet of powder each day with food.  You can buy this product at your vet or online.

Another thing to make a dog's breath smell bad is if he is eating his own poop. This is a very common practice for puppy mill dogs or dogs not fed properly.  Watch your dog when going outside to confirm if this is happening. If he is eating his poop here are a few things to try:
  • Be outside with your dog and pick up after him, deterring them from eating it.
  • May need to go as far as walking him outside on a leash and pulling him a away when he goes for it.
  • Change your dog's diet.  A dog's digestive system is dependent on a specific mix of enzymes to break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats.  Sometimes they aren't getting enough of certain nutrients their body needs.
  • Some people have found that adding a small amount of pineapple from a can or sprinkled MSG to the dog food help.  This creates the output of the poop to not taste as good as it use too.

Share your travel plans with MABTR and
in return help out a Boston
As many of you know MABTR covers 13 states. 75% of our adoptions occur between foster homes and adopters in different states, requiring MABTR to set up a transport by car.  We do not fly our dogs.

Many of us travel for business or pleasure by car so we ask that you share with us your travel plan should you have room for a Boston to hitch a ride.

Just some examples, and not limited to, of routes completed.  Note that some routes are short distances where others a whole day:
  • Colorado Springs, CO to Cheyenne, WY
    • Omaha, NE to St Louis, MO
      • Omaha, NE to Boise, ID
        • Des Moines, IA to St Paul, MN
          • Kansas City, MO to Springfield, MO
            • ... the list goes on
Share with us your travel plans - even those scheduled in the future.
It is simple.  Just email [email protected] your starting and ending location, date(s) of travel, and your name and phone number.  We will file the travel schedule shared and if the need approaches we will contact you with details.

Most of our dogs ride well in cars without a crate, but if you require a crate we can supply one.

The doggies thank you for allowing them to hitch a ride!!!!!  Without drivers we would struggle moving our dogs closer to their forever homes.

Remember that you can write off at tax time your gas or mileage when transporting our Bostons.

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

AGE is just a number

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.

Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.

MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
