A Message From Our Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ:
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe.
You call all nations to walk in your light
And to seek your ways of justice and peace,
For the night is past, and the dawn of your coming is near.
Bless us as we light the first candle of this wreath.
Rouse us from sleep,
That we may be ready to greet our Lord when he comes
And welcome him into our hearts and homes,
For he is our light and our salvation.
Amen.

Advent is a season of waiting. We mark the passage of time as we light the Advent wreath, open the Advent calendar, and wait for Christmas and the light to appear.

Our society urges us to hurry and spend, while scripture and tradition beckons us to slow down and wait. We are tempted to rush and hurry, but in our church calendar Advent reminds us to slow down and to lean together. The darkness is all around us in the short days and long nights. In ancient times, people spent more time in doors, waiting for the return of the light. Advent reminds us of the rhythms of life. Advent invites us to open scripture and read of Mary and the promise of God to continue the reign of David.  Mary was an unlikely heroine, yet God invites her into the salvation story. Just as God invites you into a deeper faith journey.

Below you will find Daily Bible readings for Advent and Christmas (pg 24 Sundays and Seasons), slow down, open your bible and read the stories of Advent and waiting. You may experience a more sacred season, as you slow down, read scripture and enter God's salvation story.

Pastor Cliff

A Message From Our Council President

Dear Fellow St. Luke Saints,
Is it me or has this year flown by?  I am sitting here to pen my final newsletter article as your Council President and all I can think to say is "Thank you".   Thank you all for your faith in the leadership of this amazing church.  I have been blessed to have gotten to know and serve with people, who, while we have our differences, always come together for the good of St. Luke.  They always have the congregation's needs at heart and they have supported me in my role.  Thank you to my fellow Council members for the fun, fellowship, food and great conversations that took place at our meetings and for your advice and guidance.  I have learned so much from each of you and will cherish all of you forever.
Sunday December 3, 2017, following our 10:00 service will be our Congregational Meeting.  There are several items on the agenda including the church budget as well as elections for Council positions.  There will be refreshments prior to the meeting.  Please make plans to attend to hear how St. Luke is moving forward in the new year.
As our year is winding down, I would like to challenge each of you in the coming year to try something new.  Experts say that trying something new on a regular basis can help strengthen your mind, body and spirit.  If you have never served on a committee, or it has been a while, please talk to a committee member and see if there is an area that could use your talents. Volunteering doesn't require a great deal of time, just you and a willingness to serve your fellow saints.  Remember that a family that plays and works together, grows and strengthens together.
Please continue to pray that St. Luke will soon find a music director.  I truly believe God has someone in mind, they just haven't heard His call!!
Our capital campaign to reduce the mortgage debt of St. Luke is continuing.  We have been blessed with a couple of large donations which have been applied to the mortgage further reducing the overall amount.  Please prayerfully consider supporting this important mission moving St. Luke to be mortgage free.
Remember to sign up to help with the Christmas eve services as well as other events throughout the month.
Thank you once again for all your support for the leadership of St. Luke. God bless you all as He has blessed me with this wonderful opportunity and bless St. Luke in the new year.

1 John 5:3-4 " F or the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments.  And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world.  And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. "

Yours in Christ,
Priscilla Hughes

 Spiritual Growth Ministry

We will be doing a short review of the book/video My One Word by Pastor Mike Ashcraft and Rachel Olsen in December.  Those of you who participated last year will remember that the study centers around choosing a key word on which to focus for one year.  Many of us chose a word for 2017 and have already started considering
what our word will be in 2018.

All are welcome to join us for a discussion after the Advent Service on Wednesday, Dec. 6 and/or Wednesday Dec. 13, approximately 7:30pm.  We will meet in the conference room across from Pastor Cliff's office.  If you are not familiar with My One Word, feel free to check out the website  myoneword.org  for additional details.

They will listen, care, encourage, pray with and for you, and support you through the holidays and as long as your need persists. BE AN ANGEL this Christmas by choosing a colored tag on our Angel Tree, located in the Narthex, and purchasing a gift.  The green ornaments are for our Outreach Families; blue ornaments are for our Refugee families and red ornaments
are for the children at Peace.
Special Note for the Red Tags -
In the past we have always provided toys for the children in the Peace Lutheran neighborhood.  This year Tonie and the 13 children have a different request.  Please read below what Tonie sent me and what the children are asking for this year.  I know toy tags on the tree are fun to take, buy with your children, wrap and put under the tree, but we need to make sure that EVERY child gets a blanket and a winter outfit!!  I know our St. Luke Saints will come through with flying colors and what an opportunity for a "teaching" moment with our children!!  Thank you!!

"The theme is BLANKETS. The children would love to have their own blanket and a winter outfit. These things would last longer than toys for Christmas. Thanks for including our small community in your ministry for others. We will be having a program play with the children before they get their gifts."
Please bring your
wrapped gifts, with the tag attached to the outside of the packages, and place under the Angel Tree by Wednesday, December 13 th .
Thank you for sharing the spirit of Christmas!!

The Christmas Program at Peace Lutheran "Story of the Train to Bethlehem" will be at Peace Lutheran Church on December 23, 2017 from 11 AM to 1 PM.  Everyone is invited.

Volunteers are needed to plan and coordinate the meal three times in 2018. Please contact Dave (351-1453) or Susie Carlson (486-9972) to volunteer.

Grace Healthcare
You are Needed!
If you can sing, we need you!  If you can't sing we
still need you!
And anyone can make a 'joyful noise' when it comes to Christmas Carols!!

You can serve ice cream and cookies  to people who love to see your smile!  You can talk to a lonely person who wants someone to pay them attention. All you need to do is block out  an hour between 2 and 3 every second Monday of the month!   There are sick, injured and some old folks just waiting for you!   St. Luke's Birthday Ministry  to the clients at Grace HealthCare has had more attendees at the parties for the last few months. We need a minimum of three servers and two singers to be successful. The best part is we try to talk to the people while we are serving! God has continued to bless this ministry for many years. Please contact Alice Burns if you are interested in helping, or need more information.
Email Alice at [email protected] or catch her on Sunday. Thank you!

Thanksgiving Baskets -  Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!!!!
Thank you once again for your generous response in donating food and turkeys for the Thanksgiving baskets.  You not only gave 37 families a bountiful meal, but more importantly you showed God's love through your gifts of kindness.
We cooperated again this year with Tonie Robinson and Peace Lutheran, along with our Family Promise graduates.
Special thanks to Tammy and Kent Anderson, Jim and Esther Allay, Patti Calvert, the P-K 4, Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd grade classes who helped gather and sort food donations, Jennifer Wright and the St. Luke Youth for sharing part of their lock-in evening with packing the baskets and all the deliverers of the baskets.
A very special thank you goes out to Richard and June Morgan and Thrivent Financial with their "Action Team" Project Program. St. Luke saw a need in our community, a need to help 37 families and Thrivent helped St. Luke meet that need!  We had the idea!  We had the passion!  Thrivent helped fulfill it!  Thanks to everyone who made a difference!!

The K-4, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade class helped gather and sort food for our 37 Thanksgiving baskets!!

At the Lock-In St. Luke Youth helped to bag and organize for delivery our 37 baskets!!

Thanks to all of our young "Saints" for helping with this wonderful ministry!!

STEWARDSHIP

Responding to God's Covenant
Dear Saints of Saint Luke Lutheran Church,

Throughout 2017, your Stewardship Team has worked to inspire our congregation to generously and joyfully offer their time, talents and resources to the Lord for the ministries of Saint Luke Lutheran Church. We see Christian Stewardship as a natural extension of the Lutheran Doctrine of the priesthood of all believers. During the month of November we showed how Stewardship is "Responding To God's Covenant". Which was inspired by "We will not neglect the house of our God" Nehemiah 10:39. St. Luke has grown, not because of a few people in the church. It is the St. Luke saints commitment and dedication to growing God's church!

We would like to thank all of the Saints who turned in a pledges card or signed up for "Simply Giving". Our Stewardship Program culminated on Celebration Sunday, November 19, with a message from Dr. Scott Morris, and a Turkey Dinner. It is with faithful support from Saints like you that help St. Luke continue to grow and reach out to those in need. If you have not turned in a pledge card, you still have time. You can pick one up in the Nave and turn it in to the office. You can also register for "Simply Giving" via the internet at stlukememphis.org and click on the "Giving" tab. This will allow you to monitor and set-up your Simply Giving at your our leisure.

There are so many ways that you have shown your Trust in God's Generosity through Time, Treasures and Talents. We are striving to find new and better ways to help you give your Time, Treasures and Talents for St. Luke. We want to encourage you to take advantage of these programs and also let us know how Stewardship can improve.

We are deeply grateful to the members and for the ministries of our church family, all to the glory of God!

Sincerely, with the Love of Christ,
The St. Luke Stewardship Committee

Thank you ALL for your support of God's ministries through St. Luke!

OVER 70-1/2?
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD's) have been permanently extended to individuals 70-1/2 and over. These are direct contributions from a qualified IRA (traditional or Roth) to a qualified charity (St. Luke). They do not first go to the owner of the IRA, but instead go directly to the charity from the IRA trustee or custodian. So what are the advantages?
QCDs are included in meeting the test of Required Minimum Distributions (RMD's) from your IRA upon reaching 70-1/2 years of age;
deductibility limits do not apply to QCDs up to a maximum of $100,000;
If you do not itemize you could possibly still get a tax deduction for charitable contributions through lower income assuming that you would otherwise withdraw your charitable contribution from your IRA;
If you pay taxes on a portion of your Social Security, QCDs may reduce reported income below the RMD. This may also help in cases where you are subject to tax on Net Investment Income, or phase-out of personal exemptions or itemized deductions.
If you feel that this is something that would be of advantage to you, talk to your tax advisor. QCD's only became permanent this year so a lot of folks are not familiar with the new law.

Parish Talk & Cliff Note

Reformation:  What a celebration!  Think of all the Lutheran churches around the world, celebrating such an awesome event in history, on the same day...  St. Luke was graced with a beautiful violin prelude, performed by Marcin Arendt and the Adult Choir performed "The Family of Christ" for us.  Many thanks for all the hours of practice and talent shared!

Have you seen the awesome Ulmer Munster cathedral that Ray Hatton donated to us?  It's the 5 th tallest structure in the world, built before the 20 th century.  Take a look or two at this amazing replica.  Many thanks to Rev. Hatton for his generosity!

Please join us in decorating St. Luke for the Christmas season, on Friday, December 1st at 9am.  We will have a great time and join together in fellowship over a chili lunch.  Many hands make light work!

Welcome to our new members:  Rob, Cathy, Thomas, and Sam Dafoe and Leif Karnuth.  Don't you just love it when we get a bigger family of saints?! In this season of gratitude, we welcome you and offer our support.

David Potter We had a surprise visit from David Potter in November.  What a treat!  He even went to work and led us in music - no rest for the weary...  Many thanks, David; come back often!

And, speaking of surprise guests, Theresa Peters visited us with her mother, Peggy Nutzell.  Sadly, Peggy is leaving us for a new home up north.  We wish her every blessing. She and George were longtime members of St. Luke and worked very hard to build this church.
Wow!  Did you attend the Ceruti String Quartet concert, last month?  I told Pastor Cliff I almost ran into the sacristy to get a fire extinguisher.  The fingers of Marcin Arendt, Timothy Shiu, Lenny Schranze, and Kimberly Patterson were flying over the strings so quickly, I expected to see flames shoot out from their instruments.  Many thanks to them for their beautiful performance and for sharing their musical talents with us.

Our Cherub Choir blessed us on Consecration Sunday with not 1, but 2 anthems!  They started out with "Kids of the Kingdom'' and then sang "Thank You Jesus."  How delightful!  They will be getting choir robes soon (how cute is that?!) and we thank each and every one of them for their wonderful performance!
Congratulations to Karen McCracken and Alice Burns for awards earned for their work at the Church Health Center.  Karen completed an 8 week course in Health Ministry and Alice completed a First Aid for Mental Health course, having already done the Health Ministry course.  We are so proud of these two women as they provide blessings to the St. Luke Saints.

Cliff Notes:
Reformation Sunday:  "We're WHAT?"  That's probably what Pastor Cliff said when his father let the German Lutheran skeletons out of the closet, a few months before Cliff's ordination.  It turns out this family has short Catholic roots, dating back to when they settled in Baton Rouge.  So - what does this have to do with Martin Luther?  Imagine Martin having an intimate discussion with his blue collar father, who scrimped and saved to send his son to law school and Martin, like Cliff, informed his father that he was changing careers, to become a monk.   Cliff is no monk, but he went the way God led him.  (Yeah for us!). In Luther's time, if a man and a woman were of different faiths and wed, the marriage wasn't recognized.  The church was re-formed by Luther, who had the creds to do it:  he was a parish priest, a monk, and a college professor.  His 95 theses were questions about the practices and beliefs that were accepted in his time.  Thank goodness he was a man of honor, passion, courage, and willingness to tell the truth.  He wasn't perfect, by any means - he was a saint and a sinner, like all of us, but his stubbornness paid off and we celebrate his work today.  When he died, a note was found in his pocket that read, "We are beggars; this is true."
Death and money.  Hmmm.  That's what Pastor Cliff spoke on for All Saints Day.  It was a day of remembrance of those saints who have passed away and we also held in our hearts those close to us who have gone before us.  God has given us everything we have and therein lies a covenant of faith that we will manage well with the limited time we have in this life.  Stewardship prompts us to regard every new day as a new beginning, a time to enjoy life.  We need to make preparations for how we are to be treated in our final days and we can do this in dialogue with our family.  As good stewards, we are to give and live generously; peace of mind is all we have and that comes from God, a generous God!  Generosity is strengthened by faith.  How will you manage what God has given you?
Ken Westphal shared with us his thoughts on stewardship.  Jesus gave the parable of the bridegroom and the 10 bridesmaids, five of whom let their lanterns burn out.  They missed the wedding!  Giving can be done with time, talent, and money; we need to discern how to share our gifts, which were given to us by a loving God.  We all wish to support the future of St. Luke like Moses led his people to the promised land.  He did not get to go in, just as we will not be able to see the future of this church.  Our goal is to leave a legacy for the future of our children and the saints that will come after us.

Dr. Scott Morris, founder and CEO of Church Health was our guest speaker on Consecration Sunday.  Pastor Cliff reminded us that St. Luke sponsors a full day's care every year at the center and he chose October 31st, in honor of Martin Luther as our day.  Dr Morris spoke about the early Thanksgivings, starting with Henry VIII  (who knew?!), who winnowed down 95 days of paid vacation for the people to 2 days, when everyone was to eat and be thankful.  (Sheesh!)  Then Lincoln declared the last day of November to be the American Thanksgiving (during the Civil War).  In 1963, President Kennedy pardoned the mighty fowl, the first president to do so.  Dr. Morris went on to speak about Jesus' return to the disciples while they were fishing and He asked Peter 3 times if he loved Jesus.  Three times Peter declared that he did and Jesus told him to "feed his sheep."  This was a call to discipleship:  "Follow Me."  Health is a state of having more joy, more love, and a closeness to Jesus.  Be generous beyond words to your church.  Remember that our gifts are not judged by God.
Many, many thanks to our Stewardship Committee for putting on an incredible Thanksgiving feast.  We are so lucky to have these hard workers in our midst - true generosity to St. Luke.
