The winter holiday season is a time of year filled with all sorts of emotions and experiences – from fun to challenging family gatherings at Thanksgiving; from bright, sunny, and crisp coastal weather to stormy weather; from end-of-year work or holiday-preparation stress to holiday excitement and relaxation; from reflection on 2017 to renewed hopes and dreams for 2018. However, a prevalent value that surfaces during the holidays is that of
Giving
– giving of your time, your help, your resources, your stories, your thoughts, your laughter and more. The list of events and announcements in this week’s Connect With Pacifica is filled with opportunities for giving. You could give your joy at the Holiday Extravaganza at the Community Center on Friday, 12/1, or at the Rockaway Tree Lighting Festival on Sunday, 12/3, or your resources to donate or bid on a gift basket to help Pacifica homebound seniors, or your time and thoughts to apply for the Sea Level Rise Community Work Group, Library Advisory Committee, or as representative to the Mosquito Abatement District. Rest assured, however you choose to give this year, big or small -- a present or donation or smile or thought -- will make a difference in Pacifica. I’ve come to learn that Pacifica is a community that knows and thrives on this truth.

Holiday Extravaganza 2017

The City of Pacifica hosts THREE AMAZING EVENTS in its Holiday Extravaganza at the Pacifica Community Center, 540 Crespi Drive.
Holiday Lighting
,
Friday, December 1st, at 5:30 pm
featuring Cabrillo School Choir and a visit from Santa! This annual tradition has continued since the 1990s.
Santa’s Workshop
,
Saturday, Dec. 2nd, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
. $5 cash or check at the door — kids get to make a gingerbread house, can do a holiday craft and visit with Santa!
Elf Market

. Pacifica’s very own unique craft fair! Shop for holiday gifts handcrafted by local artists and community organizations with over 57 vendors.

- Visit the City of Pacifica Booth and More at the 7th Annual Rockaway Tree Lighting Festival on Dec. 3 - Pacificans are offered another opportunity to come together to ring in the holiday season on Sunday, December 3 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with the 7th Annual Rockaway Tree Lighting Festival in the Rockaway Beach district off of Hwy 1 & Rockaway Beach Ave in Pacifica. Free cable car rides get you to the event from the Pacifica Community Center beginning at 3:30 pm. Santa arrives by fire truck at 5:00 pm, and the tree lighting takes place at 6:00 pm. Enjoy local shops, vendor booths, live music, free pony rides, snow flurries, food trucks and more. Be sure to stop by the City of Pacifica booth and say "hi" while you're there. - Place Your Bid on a Beautiful Gift Basket to Benefit Pacifica Seniors - For more than a decade, donations of silent auction gift baskets by City of Pacifica employees in every department, various community service groups, and generous individuals have provided for a "Night Out on the Town" for Pacifica Meals on Wheels clients. This event offers our otherwise homebound seniors a lovely social opportunity with an elegant dinner and live entertainment "out on the town". All costs for this event are covered by a festive silent auction of donated gift baskets each December. Everyone is encouraged to join the bidding and fun of this year's silent auction which will begin online starting Friday, December 1 at 5:00pm with opportunities to bid in-person at the Rockaway Tree Lighting Festival on Sunday, December 3 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. Baskets will then be on display at the Community Center until 5:00pm on December 6, when winners will be announced. See the Silent Auction Event flyer for more information.
- Pool Closed for All Programs December 11 - 14 - The Jean E. Brink Swimming Pool at Oceana High School will be closed from December 11 through December 14 to all programs for routine maintenance. No daytime aerobics will be held at the pool on December 15. Check out the Aquatics webpage for more information about the pool and the wide array of programs offered at the pool.
- Job Opening: Lifeguard - The City of Pacifica is seeking enthusiastic and energetic individuals committed to providing excellent customer service and enjoys interacting with people of all age levels to join our team in the Aquatics Division. Lifeguards patrol and oversee the activities in and around the community swimming pool, enforce regulations to prevent accidents and rescue swimmers in distress. The ideal candidate will have a current lifeguard certification, is flexible, self-motivated, attentive, and enjoys working with public. All shifts available, including: early morning, daytime, evening and weekends. Candidate needs to be available to work at least 3 varied shifts during the week and weekend as the Aquatics Division is open year-round. - Winter 2018 PLAY Activity Guide - Watch your mailbox next week for the Winter 2018 edition of the City of Pacifica Parks, Beaches and Recreation Activity Guide (PLAY). The PLAY Activity Guide will be mailed to all homes in Pacifica. An online version is available here. Registration for classes and activities opens on December 13.
- Sea Level Rise Community Work Group Is Now Forming - The City of Pacifica is seeking applicants to participate in the Sea Level Rise Community Work Group (CWG). The CWG will be a cornerstone of the stakeholder engagement program for Pacifica’s sea level rise assessment and planning. Please see this link for a description and application for more information. All interested stakeholders are encouraged to apply. Applications must be received by December 13 and can be submitted via email at o’connorb@ci.pacifica.ca.us or mailed to Bonny O’Connor, Assistant Planner, at 170 Santa Maria Ave. Pacifica, CA 94044. - Now Recruiting for Library Advisory Committee - The City of Pacifica is recruiting qualified citizens to fill a vacancy on the Library Advisory Committee. - Mosquito Abatement District Representative Needed - Mosquito Abatement District Representative Needed - The City of Pacifica will have an opening for a City representative to the Board of Trustees of the San Mateo County Mosquito Abatement District for the 2- or 4-year term beginning January 1, 2018.
