TABC Marks November 29th as
70th Anniversary of UN Partition Plan
TABC did not let November 29th pass without bringing our students' attention to the 70th anniversary of the momentous decision of the United Nations adoption of the Partition Plan, which led to the establishment of the State of Israel in Eretz Yisrael.   Rabbi Jachter addressed the freshmen and sophomores during Shacharit and most of the juniors and seniors later in the afternoon, enlightening our students on how to detect Hashem's involvement in this awesome event.  Rabbi Jachter used Megillat Esther as a model of a miracle which does not include a violation of the laws of nature.  When repeated actions occur against all odds, the reasonable conclusion is that Hashem's subtle hand is manipulating events in our favor.   Rabbi Jachter described how Soviet, American, French and Latin American support for the resolution (as well as many of the abstentions) were against all odds yet it was not reasonable to say it was coincidence.  We are proud to have echoed Rav Soloveitchik's assertion that "kol dodi dofeik", the voice of our Beloved was knocking when the UN voted on November 29, 1947 for what eventually led to a Jewish state.
Introduction to Economics Class
Welcomes Two Alumni Speakers
As part of the curriculum in the senior elective Introductory Economics/Financial Literacy classes, students are often participants in interactive presentations with guest speakers on various topics relevant to their course of study. Last week, their instructor, Mrs. Cary Reichardt, was once again thrilled to welcome back another former student and TABC alumnus,  Aaron   Safier  '01, who is currently working for the Barnum Financial Group, as a financial/special care planner and investment advisor.  Aaron  presented an overview of financial planning concepts such as budgeting, insurance, and investing. As students answered his questions and asked many of their own, they began to see how much of this advice and information can be applied in the future.  Many thanks to  Aaron , for taking time out of his busy schedule to "give back" to TABC.

This week, yet another TABC alumnus, Joshua Schleifer '10, visited with students to discuss credit card management with students. Josh, who was an entrepreneur even back in his high school days, is managing partner in a firm which specializes in helping people in debt to repair their credit standing. The students were surprised at all the ramifications which might result from mismanagement of credit cards.Josh also encouraged them to begin a strong credit history as early as possible in their lives.  Mrs. Reichardt and her students are grateful to Josh for sharing his expertise with us.
From Book to Stage:
9H Performs The Odyssey
The 9H English students did not simply want to talk about Telemachus's maturation in Book Two of  The Odyssey;  they needed to understand exactly what the son of Odysseus was experiencing with his father absent for twenty years, no one to help guide him to action, and his courageous decision to set sail and solve the mystery. That is why they decided to rewrite the heated debate of Book Two in which Telemachus finally stands up to the angry suitors as a play, and then perform it. The class was divided into three groups and each one worked first to understand the situation, then to write the parts for each of the seven characters and finally to re-enact the scene as part of a heated competition. Speaking the words of an angry suitor helped the students understand what Telemachus was up against, and answering with strong words of his own showed not only the actor playing Telemachus but the rest of the class how determined this character was to finally act boldly and decisively. As Telemachus came to life, so did Book Two.

Dov Lipman Visits TABC
The students and faculty at TABC were privileged to hear an address from Rabbi Dov Lipman, esteemed former member of the Israeli Knesset. Rabbi Lipman described his experiences in the Knesset beginning with several whimsical stories,  such as bringing Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera to Israel, passing a law  to help facilitate training seeing eye dogs and even breaking the tension in a Knesset debate by showing a catch by Odell Beckham Jr. He shifted to a poignant description of the funeral of a lone soldier that was attended by 30,000 Israelis who had never even met him.  Rabbi Lipman exhorted the students to care about Israel, do what they can to spend time there, and to act as its "ambassadors" in America. Rabbi Lipman will be a Scholar-in-Residence in Fair Lawn this Shabbat at Congregation Shomrei Torah.
9H English: We Are All Heroes
To prepare for our study of the quintessential hero's journey,The Odyssey, and to better identify and empathize with the character of Odysseus, each student in Dr. Master's 9H English class was asked to create a board game that  followed his own personal journey to his first day of high school at TABC . At  the heart of the game were to be at least  four decisions  that either helped him arrive at this  day or hindered him in some way. As you can see from the photos, the students enthusiastically embraced this project.

Frankenstein and Frankenstein
Mrs. Shavelson's English 10A does not agree with the 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating of James Whale's 1931  Frankenstein  starring Boris Karloff. In the class's Schoology discussion comparing the movie with Mary Shelley's original, Shelley's novel came out on top for its depiction of the monster as more human and reflective. Nonetheless, most students felt the burning windmill scene and the stealing of the defective brain to implant in the Monster were excellent additions, enhancing our sympathy for the unnatural being and ratcheting up the drama. Ultimately, the boys opted for an intellectual "monster," one created 300 years ago by a 21-year-old British woman, rather than one created by Hollywood, and meant for mass consumption.
