Cheers to the "Mutt"
National Mutt Day is Dec. 2, but at ROAR we observe "Mutt" Day EVERY day. According to the Urban Dictionary, a mutt is "a dog of many mixed breeds". A mixed-breed dog is a testament to nature. Without any interference from humans, the mixed breed comes in all sizes, shapes, colors, and patterns. He might have a long snout or a pug nose. He may display ears that stand up or ears that flop. He could have a stubby tail, spindly legs, a spot over his left eye - or all three. A divine inspiration, the mixed breed is gloriously, wonderfully nature's design. Here are five more reasons we believe "mutts" rule! Drumroll please...
#1 They are unique:
A mixed breed dog is awesome because without having to adhere to breed standards, the "mutt" is unique. When visiting a shelter to adopt a mutt, the selection of choices is quite varied.
#2 You have the option of skipping the puppy stage:
While we all love puppies, many people just don't have the time and patience to train a new baby. With a shelter "mutt", you can adopt an adult dog instead. In these cases, the dog's size and temperament can be determined as well, so there will be no surprises in the future.
#3 They are less prone to breed-specific illnesses:
It is known that certain purebreds are more prone to specific illnesses. Mixed breed dogs are thought to be less likely to develop these illnesses because they have fewer breed-specific genes than purebred dogs.
#4 Start-up costs are cheaper:
Breeders charge a lot for purebred dogs. While shelters do charge adoption fees, they are significantly less than what you would pay for a purebred and these fees often include spaying or neutering, vaccinating and micro-chipping, costs usually not covered by a breeder.

You're saving a life:
Mixed breed dogs living in shelters are too often euthanized if not adopted quickly in order to make room for the constant influx of "mutts". Adopting one means you are directly saving a life, a fact your grateful new dog will not soon forget.

Meet TRACEY
and
CALVIN...
Holiday miracles happen all year
This petite one year old kitty had a rough start. Just a baby herself, Tracey seems too young to have had kittens of her own, but she arrived at ROAR with three little ones in tow. She was caring for them, but having a
hard
time caring for herself. So we did! We had her spayed to avoid further pregnancies, and, with lots of love, good nutritious food and a warm place to sleep, Tracey is absolutely thriving. Quite petite in size, Tracey is not lacking in personality or confidence. She has even claimed the princess bed in the window of our cat room as her very own!
The three kittens have all since been adopted and now it's time for this darling mama kitty to find a loving home of her own. Tracey is comfortable living with other cats and dogs. She will make a constant, loyal, loving companion.
Tracey is up to date on vaccinations, is FelV/FiV negative, and is spayed. Her a
doption fee is $200.

CALVIN
Four-year-old Calvin was found starved, unhealthy and covered in mange after being neglected by his owners. His rescue was miraculous thanks to our wonderful rescue partners at Homeward Bound of Mississippi. They quickly cleaned him up, made him comfortable, fed him nutritious food, and provided him with the medical care he desperately needed.
His bad luck is behind him now. Calvin is starting a new chapter in his life...one where he should be the main character. Here at ROAR he's getting more love than he could ever have imagined and he repays our kindness with an abundance of affection. Spend five minutes with Calvin and you'll discover that he is a gentle giant just starving for love.
His story reminds us of what rescue is all about. It truly makes you wonder how any human could neglect any animal in his/her care, especially a good boy like this. And it is amazing that after being treated so poorly, Calvin is still trusting and affectionate. Maybe it's rescue "mutt" gratitude,
often
expressed through loyalty, warmth, and a deep desire to please, that makes him extra special.

Russ and Tink:
"As Important as Oxygen"
Meet Russ and Tink. Russ is a Staff Sergeant in the Army who served in OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom) in 2006, 2007 and 2011. He currently works as a nurse at the VA Hospital and serves in the Army Reserves.
Tink is a two and a half year old terrier mix
from Texas who tested positive for
heartworm
. Throughout her grueling treatment, Tink remained true to her name, happy, buoyant, and full of energy. Pets for Vets, ROAR Chapter, brought these two deserving souls together and their match has truly been a match made in heaven.
"Tink has helped me to enjoy life a little bit more by slowing down a bit. There have been many times when I've had a terrible day at work but would feel so much better after getting home to her jumping up and down because she is so happy to see me. She has also helped reduce my feelings of loneliness...nothing better than her wanting to cuddle and just falling asleep like that." Russ credits Tink for his improved relationships with his family as well as others, and for allowing him to get closer to other people. When asked how important Tink is to his current life, Russ replied, "as important as oxygen." It seems like they both know where "home" is for the holidays!
