November Students of the Month
Jordan Fernandes
Class of 2018

Senior, Jordan Fernandes plans to study computer programming alongside chemical engineering in college. His loftiest goal is to attend Princeton University. Other schools he applied to are Lafayette, Lehigh, Villanova, and Stevens Institute of Technology. Jordan has had multiple favorite classes, but the two most favorite he took were AP Chemistry sophomore year and AP Computer Science A junior year. For AP Chemistry, although the class carries a hefty workload, he enjoyed all the in-class experiments that showed chemical concepts in action. With the experiments, Jordan felt as though he was not only learning the information, he was participating in it. It felt important, not like more facts and figures. In fact, the class inspired him to pursue chemical engineering in college. As for AP Computer Science A, Jordan already knew he loved coding. However, this class was the first time he ever entered a true programming language. What he loved the most about the class was that it involved so much application. They simply had to learn some simple rules and syntax, and then spent time adapting those rules and syntax to the needs of the program. That class, in conjunction with his coding interest, has inspired him to pursue computer programming in college. At North, Jordan is a member of the Technology Student Association. Outside of school, he participates in taekwondo. He is an assistant instructor and has the rank of senior first-degree black belt. Some of his favorite memories at North include doing the stock market contest in Financial Literacy, working on essays after school with Mrs. Simpson in English II, doing experiments, in AP Chemistry, and programming in AP CS A.
Rupsa Paul
Class of 2018

Senior, Rupsa Paul has had four amazing years at North Hunterdon. Rupsa’s favorite class at North was AP Biology with Ms. Flynn. Ms. Flynn helped her to further explore her interest in biology and life sciences. The class is what reassured her that she wanted to enter the health profession field when she got older. Rupsa is a member of National Honor Society and Math Honor Society. She is also a part of Key Club and Interact Club, where she has the opportunities to help other people. Rupsa volunteers at Hunterdon Healthcare once a week. She also has a job at Clinton Station Diner, where she works three times a week. Rupsa volunteers at the Garden State Cultural Association a couple times each year and recently had the chance to go to India for a chance to help the struggling communities. She plans on majoring in Biomedical Engineering, on a pre-med track. Her top school choices are Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, and Northeastern University. Rupsa’s favorite memories at North have been learning new things from her friends and teachers, while also getting the opportunity to positively affect the community around her.
November Athletes of the Month
Rebecca Fontana
Class of 2018

Senior, Rebecca Fontana has been playing soccer competitively since the first grade. This is the age when she started on her very first travel soccer team and before that she played for Clinton Township Recreation. One of Rebecca’s strongest skills in soccer is being able to get forwards when her team is attacking and then working her way back to defense. Since she plays outside defense, getting forwards doesn’t happen often for her. But anytime the opportunity arrived, Rebecca got up to help her team in the attacking play. This year, the Lady Lions won the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament, which hasn’t been done since 2008. She is so proud of what the team accomplished. Their record this year was 9-7-1. Rebecca plans to continue to play on a club team for soccer. She is hoping to attend Monmouth University to study Marine and Environmental Biology. Rebecca participates in Interact and has been a part of Relay for Life since middle school. Outside of school, she plays travel soccer for Branchburg Soccer Club and works at Chelsea’s Restaurant in Lebanon.

Raymond Sellaro
Class of 2018

Team Captain, Raymond Sellaro has had a very impressive year on the cross country team. Raymond won the Randolph Invitational, Skyland Conference Delaware Division, Stewart Memorial, Shore Invitational, and the Skyland Conference Championship. He was able to accomplish all of this because of his endurance and speed in the events. The Lions ran in the Meet of Champions, but unfortunately Raymond did not run due to an injury. His fastest time this year for a 5k was 15:39. Raymond is also on the track team at North. He started running for the Hunterdon Lions Track Club in 4th grade, but didn’t really start running competitively until the 8th grade. Next year, Raymond will be running for the University of Pennsylvania.

Hour of Code
Computer Science Education Week, December 4-10, 2017
Computer Science Education Week began in 2009 as a “call to action to raise awareness about the need to elevate computer science education at all levels.” Just eight years later, tens of millions of students in over 180 countries now participate in the Hour of Code. Teachers around the globe participate in international professional development opportunities, and advocates make a concerted push for increased support and awareness for computer science education.
During Computer Science Education Week, all math classes will participate in the Hour of Code activities either at home or in their math class. Students will log onto https://hourofcode.com/us to try different activities. Students can program a game using Scratch-like drag and drop steps, learn the basics of JavaScript and Python programming languages, or make an app to share. Students can build a galaxy in Star Wars, create a MineCraft adventure, make Anna from Frozen ice skate in different patterns, or help Moana and Maui as they sail through unknown territory across the ocean. Another website that offers computing activities is Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/hourofcode . Students are encouraged to complete activities on their own in addition to what they do in class. They will have an opportunity to complete any of the coding activities in their study halls or the “Little Library” throughout the week.

T he federal government predicts that there will be 1.4 million unfilled computer science jobs by 2020. Currently, there are 10 more open computer jobs than graduates in the field. Because of this surge in opportunities for computer careers, we have added additional computer classes to our course offerings that students may take during their high school careers. The computer courses that are available for students in the district for the 2018-2019 school year are Introduction to Programming in Java, Python Programming, Introduction to Computer Science through Gaming, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A, and Data Structures. Our hope is that by participating in the hour of code, students may choose to explore computer science by selecting one or more of the courses we offer.

AP Information Session

We are holding this informational session prior to the beginning of scheduling in an effort to give students and their parents the opportunity to speak with individual AP instructors and current students from each content area where an AP course is offered. During this session students and parents will learn about the requirements and rigor of each AP course that will be offered at North next year. For more information regarding this event, please contact the AP Coordinator, Mrs. Carol Skidmore cskidmore@nhvweb.net or 908-713-4199 x 6421.

Winter Reading Challenge
NHHS students and staff have been invited to join the inaugural Winter Reading Challenge! Sponsored by billionaire investor and Shark Tank personality Mark Cuban, the Winter Reading Challenge, to meet a collective goal of reading at 50,000 books during the month of January, has been accepted by close to 100 libraries all over the country, including the NHHS Media Center. If that collective goal is achieved, Cuban pledges to donate $25,000 to  First Book ,   a nonprofit organization that provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need.
As a school community, our goal is to read at least 100 books from the start of Winter Break on December 22 through the end of January. Students can do their part by reading at least 2 books from December 22 through January 31 and then tracking the books they read in  Beanstack , our new book-recommendation service, starting on January 1.
Learn more  about how to read for those in need during the Winter Reading Challenge.
New Tobacco Purchase Law
Effective November 1, 2017, New Jersey has raised the minimum age of sale for tobacco products and electronic smoking devices to 21. Raising the minimum age to 21 helps protect NJ youth from the deadly effects of the many chemicals found in tobacco and vaping products. Click on the link below for more information on leading a smoke-free life.

Friendship Day
The Interact Club hosted its annual "Friendship Day" on Wednesday, November 22nd at North Hunterdon High School. Over 250 Interact Club members participated in team building activities throughout the day. Special Education and General Education students are placed on 8 different teams to work together. The goal is to establish friends with others you may not normally spend time with at school. It's a day filled with fun, food, and friendships.
