News From Old McDonald's Farm

The Columbia River Gorge fire burned within four miles from Old McDonald's Farm, Inc. near Corbett, Oregon in September. They are a non-profit children's charity incorporated in 1994 and have now served over 30,000 children plus caregivers and teachers. So the animals and the farm were saved. They had 37 farm animals to remove from the farm with the two Morgan horses to a cow, pig, dogs, cats, ducks, chickens, goats, geese, bunnies, etc. That animal removal took all night when the fire was moving fast. Thank goodness for OMF volunteers who came together to get it done.
I told my sister Stephanie Rickert, move the animals quickly as fire moves very fast. In one night it covered 10 miles in two hours. I was doing what I could to help her as our wild fire got within a half mile of our farm here in 2015. Our house fire here took out one home, two outbuildings and one detached garage but we have insurance and would have rebuilt, but for once my sister listened to me. I had more fire experience so big sister's advice was listened to. It was hard to not be able to help them long distance but they closed most of the freeways from Spokane to Corbett so I could not help much except ask for help from the Portland folks when they had to remove all the animals. That coordination is never fun so please have a fire plan in place for your farm or animals in case fires hit your area.
They had to farm out all their OMF program animals all over the Portland area and keep them away for two weeks. That took a large hit on their charity finances for the year when having to buy all new feed. They were also worried it would take out a barn full of hay they need to feed for a year when the barn was just filled. New this year they added some AirBnB rentals at the farm so had to cancel a lot of those rentals which is helping their bottom line and keeping the charity viable. Who would want cute farm animals as their neighbors for the night instead of a hotel filled with noisy guests?
Stephanie Rickert used all the publicity she could to let folks know that they had a Pumpkin Pick fundraiser coming up in October. They only had two weeks to plan that huge fundraising event when they were not allowed home for two weeks. They were pretty worried there would be no OMF, Inc, program left to fundraise when it took 25+ years to build that program.
That Pumpkin Pick was a large success but they are still doing more fundraisers to make up for lost income from the fire. They had to make sure they take care of their animals and be ready for their summer children's programs next year. Can you imagine how much all those animals eat to be ready to be a living classroom for children in the Pacific Northwest?

Meri "Mary" Beth Berberet passed away on November 12, 2017, from natural causes. Meri was born on July 17, 1955, in Townsend, MT, the seventh of nine children born to William and Grace Berberet. She had four sisters and four brothers all raised on the family ranch outside Toston, MT. Her younger siblings lovingly say that she was a "mother hen" growing up. She attended grade school at the three-room rural school in Toston and Broadwater County High School in Townsend. She then attended two years at Carroll College in Helena, and completed her Business degree at Eastern Oregon University. In 1982, Meri met her husband, Bill Bond, in Gardiner, MT and in 1985, Meri and Bill moved to the Spokane area.

Meri was full of life and love for others. She loved her husband, her step-daughters, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews, and other family members. Ever giving, she was there to care for her parents in their later years and to also care for her Aunt Joan during her terminal illness. Over the years Meri was very active in the Spokane area community, working for the Economic Development Council and volunteering with the Exchange Club and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, among others. She was also an active member of the St. Joseph Parish congregation.
Meri is survived by her husband, Bill, of Newman Lake; step-daughters Melanie Bond of Lead, South Dakota and Kirstin (Scott) Huff; grandchildren: Noah, Kaitlyn, Hannah, and Elijah of Airway Heights, WA; brothers: Jerry Berberet of San Diego, CA, Dick (Pat) Berberet of Stillwater, OK, Bert Berberet of Toston, MT; sisters: Jane (Bill) Peacock of Astoria, OR, Jeanni (Jerry) Balint, Jackson Hole, WY, Barb DeMartin of Toston, MT, and Trish Berberet of Spokane, WA; sister-in-law Kathy Berberet of Lewistown, MT; and multiple nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Grace Berberet and brother Steve Berberet.

Bill was the manager at Scottsdale Feed & Saddlery and often delivered my hay. Ellie became my Morgan mentor and friend & I house sat & took care of horses & kids while Bill & Ellie went on their honeymoon and vacations. So many memories.
