Advent I
This Sunday:

Services at 7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m.

Every Sunday in Advent, parishioners will light the candles of the Advent wreath. At the 9 a.m. service, Carissa, Brad and Ella Etters will light the candle, and Christine Lowery, Shannon Sinclair, and Ryon Sinclair will do so at the 11:15 a.m. service.

At 10:10 a.m., both youth and children will meet in the second floor Children's Area for  Godly Play (first Advent lesson)
+ Children in Mission. We will be decorating Giving Tree and making cards for homebound folks. There will be snacks!

At 10:10 a.m, come and study the Gospel passage for today in Lectionary Bible Study! There will time for learning, for context, for discussion, and for imagination.

The Put Happy on a Face table will be in the Gathering Space this Advent. Your donation to this campaign ensure that we are able to provide enriching quality summer camp experiences to our current and past Woodville students. For more information, see below

Dadas & Design will be in the Norwood Room from 8:30 to 1:00 p.m. selling products made by the sewing artisans in Mwitikira.

The Greening of the Church will take place immediately after the 11:15 a.m. service. Please join us for this joyous time of hanging the greens.
Jottings from Grace Street

To read a reflection on this Sunday's Gospel, visit Jottings from Grace Street, a weekly blog by the Rev. Sue Eaves, our bridge interim rector.

"Oftentimes our living becomes clouded by the problems or challenge of getting through another hectic day. The sheer complexity of our schedules consumes our energy, to say nothing of the task of meeting the expectations of family and friends. Before we know where we are, the chaos of minds has no time for the still place deep in our hearts where reside our hopes and dreams."
Vestry updates:

  • Our next congregational meeting will be  December 10 at 10:10 a.m. Please join us for a time of learning and listening to one another as we look at the roles of vestry, clergy and parishioners to understand how we minister together to create a healthy and productive time of transition to our future, facilitated by the vestry and our consultant, Karen Salter.
  • The vestry nominating committee has been selected, so the ballots are out! You can find ballots in the narthex and the Gathering Space, and place them in the ballot box in the Gathering Space. The nominating form has information about eligibility and vestry responsibilities. If you have any questions about vestry service, please let us know by calling the church office or sending an email to [email protected]. Thank you for considering this very important call to service to the people of St. Paul's.
  • The vestry minutes are posted on the vestry bulletin board outside of the parish office.

Advent Lessons & Carols

Please join us on Sunday, December 10 at 5:00 p.m., as the choirs of St. Paul's sings a service of Advent Lessons and Carols.  The Service of Lessons and Carols for Advent was originally celebrated at King's College, Cambridge.
The order of service includes old liturgical forms that vividly express the Church's preparation for the coming of the Lord Jesus both in the festival of Christmas and in the consummation of the ages. The service alternates lessons from the Old and the New Testaments with carols and hymns, finally climaxing in St. Matthew's Gospel, in which the angel brings the news that Mary will bring forth a son, "and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with      us."
Christmas memorial flowers

Those wishing to contribute to Christmas flowers and decorations in memory of a loved one or in honor of someone, may do so by sending your check to the church office by Friday, December 15th.  Include with your check the name of the person(s) for whom the gift is given and also the name of the person making the donation, with Christmas decorations in memo.  Gift donations begin at $20.
Put Happy on a Face

The Put Happy on a Face table will be in the Gathering Space this Advent. Your donation to this campaign ensure that we are able to provide enriching quality summer camp experiences to our curren t and past Woodville students. Honor your family and friends with a Christmas gift of knowing they were a part of putting happy on the face of these students!

A gift of $25 covers one week of camp; $100, a week! Contact Heather Brugh at [email protected] or  Hana Yun at [email protected]

Now casting: Christmas Pageant

For the Annual Christmas Eve Pageant, we are looking for folks to play the parts of Joseph and the Prophet. Please let Keli Shipley Cooper ( [email protected]) or Linda Willis ( [email protected]) know by December 4 if there is a part you could fill.

Intergenerational pinecone project

Intergenerational Pine Cone Sunday Hour is December 17 at 10:10. We will be making pine cone decorations for homebound parishioners, our neighbors, and our friends. There will be hot chocolate and cookies to raise our spirits. Come for fellowship, for fun, and to love those who can't be with us on Sundays.

Blue Christmas

Come to the chapel (enter on 9th Street) for a contemplative Blue Christmas service on Sunday, December 17 at 4 p.m. The holidays are not joyful for everyone.  For those who have experienced loss, the Advent and Christmas season are often difficult and lonely. Blue Christmas is a service of contemplation, quiet, and a place to grieve.
December Foyer Dinner
variety_cookies.jpg

Come and wish your fellow parishioners a Merry Christmas at the December Foyer Dinner on December 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall.  This Foyer Dinner will be a little different - it starts an hour earlier at 5:00 and will not be a potluck dinner.  Instead, please bring a batch of cookies for a "Cookie Exchange" (arrive with your batch - leave with a variety!).

Chili will be provided by the St. Paul's Chili Cook Off contestants, and there will be Christmas crafts, including making ornaments as gifts for the teachers at Woodville Elementary School!

Wine and beer will be available (for a suggested donation of $5 to cover costs), as well as coffee and iced tea. Sign up by using this link in the Coming Up on Grace Street emails, calling the parish office or using the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Space. This event is kid-friendly, but if you need child care, please indicate that when you sign up.
