CHILL OUT AND COLOR

Come relax with snacks and wine and learn how the simple act of coloring can erase a stressful day.  NCJW member Erin Oakley has created a personalized coloring book just for NCJW/Cleveland.  Participants receive a book and a set of coloring pencils.  There will also be additional coloring materials available and a fun discussion of color theory and how coloring relieves stress.

The NCJW Book Group meets the first Thursday of each month, Sept. - June.  Led by Amy Rosenfield, the discussion is open only to NCJW members.  There is no fee to participate, however we collect an optional donation ($5 suggested) per session for our moderator.

How To Argue Jewishly

Poisonous rhetoric is spreading everywhere, even to the dinner table and that's a very Jewish subject.  Our sages spent a lot of time discussing civil discourse.  Yet, for each of us personally, it can be hard to be persuasive, yet civil.  In this session, we'll talk about how to drive home a point without proving that the other person is wrong or making her feel stupid.  We'll learn how to put into action some techniques that can make this world a better place.

VULNERABILITY THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA"  

It is a sign of the times -- All children and teens who are on the internet or who text are vulnerable to sexual exploitation, cyberbullying and other abuses via social media.  Therefore, understanding the Issues & Stop Human Trafficking committees are collaborating to let us know the dangers and help our young people avoid them.

HELP THE HOMELESS KEEP WARM

The Operation Warm Up boxes are now in place at sites around the Jewish community.  Please do your part and fill them up!  Donations go to the homeless community during the Homeless Stand Down event on January 20.

 

NCJW runs this warm clothing drive for the entire Jewish community and it is the only project in which all Jewish organizations in Cleveland and NE Ohio work together.

TRUE JOY IN SHOPPING!

Participate in Homeless Stand Down, the culmination of Operation Warm Up.  Each volunteer will be assigned to a participant to stock them with boots, winter clothing and coats. We need to get an estimate of the number of volunteers who want to participate in order to secure our choice of volunteer opportunities.

What:    The Homeless Stand Down, Cleveland's one-day event to support our homeless population.

ENTERTAINMOBILE had a great year - 25 shows performed at senior centers and nursing facilities throughout the greater community!  We have two upbeat, fun shows running concurrently:  "Ain't We Got Fun" and "Just Because."

Following the sudden passing of our beloved pianist, Gary Darrow, we welcomed back an "old friend," Joan Bendix, who quickly jumped in to join us in "Ain't We Got Fun." She and Rhona Jacobson, who plays for "Just Because", are the true stars of our group and we are so grateful for the hours they spend practicing and leading us at the piano.

Interested members are cordially invited to view the new Hello Israel program.  The grand opening will be held during the week of January 15.  Stay tuned for more information.  Our revamped, fast paced program is a great new volunteer opportunity.

 

KNITTING WITH HEART

What a gratifying evening we had on Nov. 15, when Digknitty

members visited the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center to present 19 blankets, 18 hat and scarf sets, and 4 teddy bears to Veterans in the rehab program. They were so appreciative that we are going to continue to make these items throughout the year so we will be able to do it again next year.

 

We are also going to make red preemie and infant hats for the "Little Hats, Big Hearts" program.

Many of us make our charitable decisions at this time of year. While tax savings is not the number one motivator for most people, why not take advantage of these benefits and support National Council of Jewish Women/Cleveland's mission at the same time. Here are some ideas to consider... 

• With the stock market reaching record highs, now is the time to donate appreciated securities that you have owned for at least one year. It is easy to transfer stock to the National Council of Jewish Women/Cleveland to pay your annual fund pledge, to add or create a named Endowment, or to create a Tribute Fund. In the event that tax laws change, you may receive a larger benefit if you donate before December 31, 2017.

• THE IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER applies to those of you who are 70½ or older. You can transfer up to $100,000 to the National Council of Jewish Women/Cleveland without tax consequences.  And it counts toward your required minimum distribution.
