It is with great sadness that I write this.
A couple of weeks ago we lost a wonderful friend in ISN.
Mark Amos passed away in the afternoon on Nov 7 after putting up a really good fight with cancer.
What do I say about Mark?
Mark was one of the sweetest, happiest, and friendliest people I have ever had the pleasure to know. He had a smile that would light up the darkest room and a love for life that was innocent and pure.
He loved music and he loved to Dance and whether he was dancing in his chair at Namaste or at outdoor events Downtown in the summer. Or if he just had music playing in the back ground on the radio, music was a great source of joy for Mark.
He loved going on adventures and every day he would ask to go for a drive; for Mark it was never about where he was going, the real fun was in the journey and being able to do it with his workers who he loved very much.
For me Mark's passing has left a big hole that will never be fully filled. I will always miss my good friend who was always ready with a hug and a big smile that made even the worst of days not so bad.
Rest easy my friend....

Practical Prep: Economical Emergency Preparedness
The District of Saanich is pleased to share practical and economical ideas to make preparing for emergencies easier.
Many of these valuable tips have been collected from their volunteers, residents and staff. Just as every family is unique, so is their preparedness. Account for the people who make your household special and plan to meet their needs. If you have children, provide age appropriate information about what you are planning for and have them help you make kits. They may take special interest in creating a kit for the family pet. Use small events such as power outages or storm events to practice your plan and access your kit.

Henry House News
Henry House enjoyed a game of table bowling on November 21. They've starting decorating the house for Christmas and are getting into the festive spirit with the story of The Polar Express.

Community Living BC is pleased to support an important resource offered by the Family Support Institute (FSI). FSI has created an online resource database called
www.findsupportBC.com
that connects families and individuals living with diverse abilities to more than 4,000 governmental and non-governmental resources in almost every region of British Columbia.
Find Support BC was launched in 2015, with a small grant from CLBC, and every effort was taken to make sure the database would be an easy to use trusted online resource for families. When developing the site, FSI brought focus groups together at every stage of site development. Because of these efforts, CLBC has heard from many individuals and families that the data base has been a successful tool and central access point for locating programs and activities that range from assistive technology, recreation, and housing options to funding, financial security, and government programs and services.
In addition to the multiple resources found on the site, users will be able to access the recently added
Transitions Timeline
that provides checklists, priority areas and steps families should take and what services and supports may be available to them specific to transitioning youth.

CHRISTMAS HAMPER FOR THE MUSTARD SEED
Mark Douglass was a long time employee at Kardel who passed away in 2009. In addition to supporting individuals at Kardel, Mark was involved in supporting people through volunteering at The Mustard Seed Church. This is something that Mark did for many years and we hope that this is something our fellow employees can help us to continue.
In honour of Mark Douglass we will be collecting items for the
Mustard Seed Food bank. At each home and program we are asking that people gather and donate items that would benefit the people supported by the Food
bank.
The food bank supports a large number of people in our community who would appreciate:
- Cash donations
- Gently used winter coats
- New socks and underwear
- Food and baking supplies
- Personal care items (soaps, shampoos, toilet paper, etc...)
- Feminine hygiene products and wipes
- Baby supplies
- Laundry soap
- Tea, coffee and hot chocolate
Please collect items and the Dustin Team will come by each home/program on December 15 to deliver them to the Mustard Seed.

Hard to believe November has come and gone already. We have been getting ready for the upcoming Holiday Season. Our tree is up, Christmas Shopping is almost complete and gifts are wrapped. Time to sit back and enjoy the beautiful season.
Kim has been meeting up with her high school friends on Mondays at the Serious Coffee in Sidney. She has really enjoyed re-connecting with them and her old teacher Gayle. Kim has also been busy with making some Christmas crafts and she helped to decorate the tree.
Cory is off to Nanaimo on Friday to have lunch with his mom. He and Sharon will head up in the morning, shop at Costco and Jysk in Nanaimo before hitting the White Spot for lunch.
Kate enjoyed a lovely morning "High Tea" at The Empress with her family.
She is off to a Christmas Event this Friday evening with her Day Program.
Let the festivities begin.
Jen has been busy with her physio and massage appointments in hopes of
getting her back up walking a bit more. She is having lunch with her mom
tomorrow and we are going to attempt to get her into her mom's car so they can go for a drive together.

Michael Langridge was part of
Special Olympics Team Canada being recognized in the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday November 29, 2017! Special Olympics Team Canada was honoured by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Sports & Persons with Disabilities Kent Hehr for their accomplishments and performances at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games!
Michael won two gold medals in alpine skiing at the Special Olympics in Austria this past March.

At LifeLabs they understand that having blood drawn can sometimes be a source of anxiety for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which can result in delayed diagnosis and treatment. This is why LifeLabs developed specific blood collection practices as part of their Serving
Customers with Autism program to deliver a safe and positive experience that increases the likelihood of a successful procedure.
The program is now available at all LifeLabs Patient Service Centres in British Columbia and Ontario.

To honour graduates who show dedication and leadership in supporting people who have significant challenges, and through his/her actions, inspires others to see the "person within." The successful recipients will demonstrate creativity, compassion and a sense of humour with people with significant challenges. If possible, these recipients will have the ability to 'sign' (sign language).
