Community Foundation of Morgan County, EDC to Host Industrialists; Focus on Workforce Initiatives

Ed Kominowski, Executive Director of Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc. (CFMC), and Mike Dellinger of MCEDC have invited several key Morgan County industrialists to participate in the Foundation's CEO Roundtable in December that will focus on skilled trades education and lifelong learning.  According to Kominowski, "With the introduction of the Parallel Pathways initiative in the Martinsville school system, CFMC, through the support of local philanthropists, is taking on the role of facilitating an honest conversation about the future of our county."  Having visited other workforce training centers in central Indiana including Ivy Tech in Bloomington, Kominowski indicated that the Foundation is now actively seeking to create a physical space - a skills laboratory - in partnership with a local school corporation.

Dellinger noted MCEDC's appreciation of the opportunity to participate.  "The Foundation is leading the effort to provide resources that enhance the quality of life in Morgan County through partnerships based upon the education, employment, retention and growth of our workforce.  We want our neighbors to have every opportunity to enjoy the highest quality of life that they can achieve, and commerce simply must have access to an abundance of skilled and educable workers to sustain and grow productivity and profitability.   This infrastructure will make a statement to employers in various business sectors that Morgan County is a willing and able partner in the arena of workforce development and lifelong learning."

Mr. Kim Brand, president of 1st Maker Space will join the invited industry leaders to present ideas on new opportunities that are available to create such a physical space.  According to Dellinger, "Our ultimate goal is to gain the buy-in, ownership and participation of everyone in Morgan County that is committed to social and economic growth and opportunity."

For whom the bell tolls: Morgan County Courthouse bell tower ready to ring again

For decades, the clock tower at the Morgan County Courthouse has been keeping time in downtown Martinsville, but in recent history, the bells in the tower have remained silent.
That is about to change after the Morgan County Board of Commissioners voted Nov. 6 to have  Smith's Bell and Clock Service install an electronic bell striker.

Smith's Vice President Jesse Smith said the work on the Morgan County Courthouse clock tower is special because the Camby-based company calls the county home.

"As long as we are in business, we are going to try to take care of Morgan County because we are here," Smith said. ...

Martinsville's 'City of Mineral Water' sign getting new life

For many years, the "Martinsville City of Mineral Water" sign has sat dormant in downtown Martinsville, atop the Union Block Building at the intersection of Morgan and Main streets. That will soon change.

The sign will once again be aglow this week. A downtown lighting ceremony is set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday to celebrate the historic sign and kick off the holiday season.

LED lighting in the refurbished sign will not only increase efficiency and illumination, but will allow for the sign to be lit around the clock, 24 hours a day.

According to research by Joanne Stuttgen, the sign has been unlit for about 14 years. ...
