COWBOYS OF THE STOCKYARDS
The Stockyards has seen its share of cowboys and cowgirls in its 150-year history. They've faced grit and grind of the cattle industry, felt the hardness of horns and dirt in the arena. They've made cattle trades, built buildings that stand the test of time and even survived a few brawls in the process. The spirit of the Cowboy continues in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. And with that we bring you one of today's Cowboys of the Stockyards.

NANCY GILL

Nancy, in one word, what kind of cowboy are you?

All-business

How are you connected to the Stockyards?

I have worked for Superior Livestock Auction for the past 9 years as the Director of Sales and Marketing.  I grew up in a small town in the Texas Panhandle: Miami, TX "Home of the National Cow Calling Contest" every first weekend in June.  Graduating from Texas Tech University in 1998, I lived all over the state of Texas working in the Hospitality Industry, and landed in the Fort Worth Stockyards 12 years ago. While my family still ranches in the Panhandle, I get the pleasure of working with commercial and purebred cattle producers on a daily basis.  Superior Livestock Auction will sell 1.4 million head of cattle this year and will broadcast 650 plus auctions and events (from competitions, horse sales, bull sales, steer shows, equipment auctions, etc.). Superior Livestock also has a production company that serves as an Agricultural Marketing Agency.  A few of the programs you may recognize are The American Rancher, hosted by Pam Minick and Superior Sunrise, hosted by Kirbe Schnoor.  The majority of our production is broadcast on "RFD-TV" as well as their sister station "The Cowboy Channel".  I have a passion for the agricultural industry and want the youth of today and tomorrow to continue that tradition for many years to come.  There is no better way than the "Cowboy Way".

What is your favorite thing about the Stockyards?

I love to entertain family and friends in the Stockyards. I have a black belt in shopping and there are too many places down here that are good at taking my hard earned money.  If you are in the "817" area code and you don't have plans to see the Stockyards, you might as well turn around and go back home or rethink those plans.

Tell us a great Exchange Avenue memory you have.

So many great memories! But every auction day when we have a room full of hard working Superior Representatives, Cattle Buyers and Sellers, Superior Co-Workers and Tourists with their hand over their hearts pledging to God and our Country that gives me goose bumps...every time.  I am a lucky gal to get to do what I love every day!
Next time you're in the Stockyards, come visit us at Superior Livestock Auction, also known as, "Wall Street of the West" in the Stockyard's Exchange Building Suite 121 or join us for a Superior Livestock Auction. http://www.superiorlivestock.com/auction-schedule

The Military Museum of Fort Worth has been in operation for 8 years, but is a recent addition to the attractions of the Fort Worth Stockyards. We are a non-profit museum with an all-volunteer staff that is dedicated to sharing the stories and sacrifices of men, women and units from the 20th Century with a Texas connection.

To accomplish our mission of preserving this history we depend on a small admission fee, or donations, to stay in operation and keep these stories alive. Veterans and active duty soldiers, and kids 12 and under are always FREE.
We are thankful our Documentary, narrated by Red Steagall, was nominated by the Lone Star Film Festival this year.  It was shown on the very big screen during the Festival. A thrill and an honor.

HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
Courtesy of the North Fort Worth Historical Society
Sheep in the Fort Worth Stockyards

By 1936 Texas had become the largest producing state for both cattle and sheep. For one week in the spring of 1937, for the first time in history, total receipts in Fort Worth received more sheep and lambs than any other market in the United States.
In 1944 the Fort Worth Stockyards were known as the largest sheep market in the world with over two million sheep coming through the stockyards.
The 1945 sheep supply was the largest number of sheep ever marketed in Fort Worth in one year: 2,713,524.

The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition  of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.

Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.

Sincerely,

Fort Worth Stockyards
National Historic District
