IEEE Journal Papers on Biomedical Imaging Published in 2017
|
All peer-reviewed IEEE journal papers published by SPS or EMBS societies during 2017 whose topic is in the biomedical imaging and image analysis domains are eligible for presentation at ISBI 2018, subject to space availability and approval by the ISBI Program Chairs. Requests for presentation of such papers should be made by submitting a one-page abstract of the paper through the ISBI 2018 website on or before the submission deadline (
January 8, 2018
). Approved requests for presentation must have one author/presenter registered for the symposium according to the ISBI 2018 registration rates. The final format of presentation (oral or poster) is the decision of the ISBI 2018 Program Chairs. The accepted abstracts will not be published in IEEE Xplore or indexed otherwise

Jennifer Doudna, Pioneer in CRISPR Genome Editing, to speak at EMBC '18
|
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Dr. Jennifer Doudna, a pioneer in
#CRISPR
genome editing, will join us at
#EMBC18
in Honolulu as a plenary speaker. Dr. Doudna's research seeks to understand how RNA molecules control the expression of genetic information. Her research led to insights about CRISPR-Cas9-mediated bacterial immunity that showed how this system can be harnessed for efficient genome editing in animals and plants, creating a transformative technology that
is revolutionizing the fields of genetics, molecular biology and medicine.

Author Instructions for Contributed Papers - Full
C
ontributed Papers-Full are presented either as an oral presentation or a poster presentation. The type of presentation will be determined by the Conference Editorial Board based on factors such as the reviewer's suggestions and topic of the paper. All presented and contributed papers will be published in IEEE Xplore and indexed by PubMed and Medline.
At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

Wake Forest University's EMB Club Holds Department Potluck
|
The Wake Forest University EMB Club hosted the annual School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES) departmental potluck. There was a surplus of food and laughter as the entire department demonstrated their cooking talents and gathered together to share a meal. As the slideshow of iconic department photos played, new connections and inter-departmental relationships were being built.
There was 43 individuals contributing to the potluck, but this event still would not be possible without IEEE Winston Salem Section. We are looking forward to next year for the new photos and return of some super star dishes.

What's Happening to Your DNA Data?

GENETIC TESTING SERVICES ABOUND, BUT CONSUMERS OPTING TO USE THEM SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE PITFALLS
|
Over the last decade, technology advances in the field of genetics have led to cheaper and more accurate testing. But attempts to be proactive in one's healthcare through genomic screening can lead to frustrations. Many general practitioners aren't trained in genetics and cannot answer specific questions, insurance may not cover a genetic test, and genetic counselors can have long wait times. So people are turning to the slew of companies offering genetic tests directly to consumers, bypassing the need to go through a clinic. Easier access to genetic testing has potential upsides-for instance, being alerted that you have a greater chance of a disease allows you to take the appropriate actions. However, as "over-the-counter" genetic tests have become more readily available, consumers are facing potential pitfalls, most notably risks from misinterpretation and a loss of privacy.

Developing a Wireless, High Precision and Processing Speed Pulse Monitoring Headset Using Photoplethysmography

|
In this paper, thorough improvement of pulse monitoring and analysis equipment with a headset structure is presented. In order to study the most suitable infrared wavelength for the acquisition of the pulse wave at the earlobe, Monte Carlo simulation was adapted. Both high frequency noise and baseline drift, generated in the signal acquisition process, are considered. To further optimize the system design and improve accuracy, for the sensor's dimensional drift, the corresponding compensation was carried on in the software. The work introduced nonlinear quantization, especially in terms of very weak pulse signal, in the time domain analysis process. A quick extraction method named table look-up combing with interpolation (TLI) was utilized to obtain frequency domain information whose processing speed can be increased by about 30 times compared to fast Fourier transformation (FFT) setting the sampling point as 300. The results demonstrated the sensor's excellent performance in pulse signal acquisition whose maximum residual is less than 0.004mV. The test on a random sample of 300 people indicates that the system had high correlation with reference, validating the system accuracy is extremely high. Overall, this study provides a practical pulse monitoring and analysis system with high precision and processing speed that can be widely applied in the field of health management or medical measurement.
