In this edition of Connecting the Dots, I would like thank our 4 winners of our Distinguished Alumni Awards. My mission since taking this position almost 4 years ago has been to connect the past with the present to ensure we have a great future.
That is how this section derived its name. Well, our winners did just that.
On Monday, Oct. 9, Archbishop McNicholas High School honored four alumni with Distinguished Alumni Awards. The night was fantastic,and all in attendance were inspired by the stories shared. Click here to read more. To make sure we keep this tradition going we need your help. You know your classmates, and you know what great things our graduates have accomplished. Now we need you to begin the process for next year. Please take a moment to nominate a classmate for one of our three awards.
Selection
The nominations for the distinguished alumni award are now being accepted for 2018. The McNicholas community will have the opportunity to nominate for this award. All three awards will be selected by a committee of school representatives. Nominations will be due by June 15, and the committee will announce its selections on July 1.
Awards
The Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented annually to one male and
one female McNicholas graduate who have honored McNicholas High School by their outstanding professional achievements, volunteer activities, and community-organization advocacy. These alumni have shared their affection for McNicholas and its community and have been shining examples of high moral and ethical standards and values learned at McNicholas High School.
The Full Stature Special Achievement Award will be presented to an alumni who exemplifies the ideals and mission of McNicholas High School and the Sisters of St. Joseph. It is presented to an individual in recognition of his or her accomplishments which bring honor to self and school and whose service, leadership, and concern for McNicholas support, strengthen, and exemplify the school's mission. This award is bestowed as a lifetime recognition and will not necessarily be presented annually.
The McNicholas Outstanding Service Award
will be presented to a member of the McNicholas community who has made, through years of tireless effort, significant contributions of time, talent, and treasure to the growth of McNicholas High School.

it marked the 116th ordination anniversary of Archbishop John T. McNicholas, with words of advice and wisdom.

Veteran's Day Program and Breakfast welcome Rep. Wenstrup, special presentations
Archbishop McNicholas High School will host a special Veteran's Day celebration this year on Friday, November 10, at 8 a.m. U.S Representative and U.S Army Reserves Colonel Brad Wenstrup
will have the honor of presenting a medal to World War II veteran Frank "Bud" Buschmeier before giving the keynote address.
The program will also include a special presentation to the Archbishop McNicholas community for its support of the
37th National Veterans Wheelchair Games hosted in Cincinnati this past July. Ellen Graf, director of volunteer services, and Tracy Butts, chairman of the NVWG, from the
Cincinnati Veterans Administration Hospital will personally thank the 169 members of Team Archbishop McNicholas High School who volunteered.
Following the program, all veterans and active duty personnel are invited to the fifth annual Veteran's Day Breakfast hosted by Archbishop McNicholas in the Café and Student Union. Guests should arrive no later than 7:55 a.m. for the program, park in the reserved area of the main parking lot, and enter through the front doors. The breakfast will immediately follow the program.
If you would be interested in joining our Military Committee, please contact Jim Hay at 513-236-7609 or jhay279786@aol.com. The committee does a lot of great work here at McNicholas. They host the breakfast on Veterans Day, organize a ceremony at McNicholas on Memorial Day, and host a dance in February. The dance helps raise funds for the upkeep of our military memorial and to raise funds for scholarships for deserving students. To date the Military Committee has raised over $70,000 dollars for scholarships. Five scholarships were offered last year at $1500 each. We would love to see you at the dance this year! More details will be coming as we get closer.

Brad Giesting '04 remembered with random acts of kindness
Archbishop McNicholas High School alumnus Brad Giesting '04 touched so many lives with his big smile, witty humor, and endless love for life. Brad proudly served his country as part of the Army's 101
st
Airborne Division, including a tour in Iraq. In May 2013, he was diagnosed with liposarcoma,
a very rare soft tissue cancer. Brad bravely endured over 70 rounds of chemotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation, and six major operations before passing away surrounded by his family on October 22, 2016.
In honor of Brad's life, family and friends will carry on his legacy by celebrating the anniversary of his passing with a Brad's Blessings Random Act of Kindness Day on October 22. McNicholas High School planned many ways for acts of kindness to honor Brad's memory. Current Rockets and Rocket Alumni are encouraged to post (https://www.facebook.com/bradsblessingsRAK/) random acts of kindness or share random acts of kindness received to help keep Brad's memory alive.

13th Annual Nick Erdy Foundation Dinner, Dance and Auction
The Thirteenth Annual Nick Erdy Foundation Dinner, Dance, and Auction will be held Saturday November 18, at Norlyn Manor, 4440 St. Route 132 in Batavia. Doors open at 5:30 pm, and the dress is casual evening attire. The event will include an open bar, a silent auction, and dinner provided by Texas Roadhouse. The evening will also feature a DJ and dancing and a split-the-pot raffle. The cost is $60 per person before Nov. 1, $75 per person after Nov. 1. A table of 8 can be purchased for $480. . Last year, the Nick Erdy Foundation awarded $4,000 in scholarships.
The school is grateful for the Foundation's generosity in helping our students and hopes parents and alumni continue to support the Erdy's work.
Nick Erdy was a 2002 graduate of McNicholas High School. Immediately after graduating, Nick fulfilled his life-long dream of becoming a Marine. When his unit was deployed to Iraq, it was part of Operation Matador on the Iraqi-Syrian border. In May, 2005, his armored assault vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device; Nick and five of his fellow Marines were killed. Nick was posthumously awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Purple Heart, the Marine Corps Reserve Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.

St. Nick at McNick is returning
Before you know it, the Christmas season will be upon us. While many of us are not quite ready to start thinking about the season to come, the Alumni Association led by a dedicated group of alumni from the Class of '66 have dusted off their elf hats and are busy making plans.
We are happy to announce that an old alumni tradition is coming back to McNick. St. Nick at McNick, an alumni service project, will once again be gifting and supporting people in need during the holiday season.
So stay tuned...over the next few weeks, information regarding how to support and get involved in the St. Nick Project will be posted on the alumni FaceBook page and emailed.
We hope you will consider joining the Alumni Association in our support of the St. Nick at McNick effort.

We are looking to form a women's alumni golf league
Female golfers, now is your chance to shine. Kathleen Glynn Stocker '82 is interested in starting up a women's alumni golf league. This is in the earliest of stages, but if you are interested in helping Kathleen in this effort, or you are interested in joining please contact her at
jnkstocker@cinci.rr.com. At this time, no course or night has been selected. That will be determined after an initial meeting of interested golfers.

Recognition Tiles
Honor a graduate, teacher, parent, or other loyal Rocket with a commemorative tile. The tiles are permanently installed in the main hallway over the summer and are available in white ($100), yellow ($150), and green ($250).

Reunions for 2018
Time to start planning
It is now time to set our sights on the next round of reunions. If your graduation year ends in a 3 or 8, you are up for a reunion next year. I will be sending an email to the reunion planning committees in the next couple of weeks. Some reunions are already starting to take shape, the classes of '58, '63, and '68 have already started having meetings. At this time, two reunion dates have already been selected. The Class of '63 has selected September 14 and 15. The Class of '68 will be celebrating their 50th reunion the weekend of October 5 and 6. As we move into 2018, please check our website to see as new reunion dates are announced.

Karen Spinelli Spardlin '62
is a Pet Partners Evaluator and Instructor for Therapy Animal Teams. If this is something you would like to do, please contact her at kspradlin@fuse.net. Her dogs visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools (READ programs where the children read to the dogs), libraries, The Clermont County Juvenile Detention Center, the VA Medical Center, and many more places where they are needed. The dogs were at Sandy Hook and most recently, at the Las Vegas shooting disaster.
Gregory Jacobs '83 is i
n his 20th year of running a successful photography business Anderson Photography, whose clients include U.C. Football, prominent realtors, and other commercial clients. Countless weddings, family, pet, and eclectic personal portraits now hang on area walls and windows. Also, his business management consulting business Anderson Services has helped clients develop and grow brand image, marketing, and growth. He has personally helped a number of successful startups as well as saved several small businesses identify bottlenecks in workflow and improve efficiences in distribution and customer service.
William Heitker '98 was promoted to position of Shift Captain at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Airport Fire Department in
September of 2017 . William also had a son, Bentley James on July 28, 2017.
Tony Losekamp '13 graduated from Ohio State and is now in the seminary for the Catholic Priesthood at Mt. St. Mary's right next door to McNick.
Anna Crooker '13 c
urrently is a PharmD student at Ohio Northern University. She expects to graduate in 2019. Beyond graduation, she hopes to do a two year pharmacy residency to become a specialty clinical pharmacist.
Nick Robbin '16
was very active in concert choir with Mr. Chris Albanese. Nick was also in the Liturgy Choir with Mr. Albanese
and Dr. Loretta Graner. He was also very active in the theatre (in many capacities (lighting design, sound, acting)). He still helps Ms. DeZarn as an alum. He sang in the Lessons and Carols last year at Dr. Graner's request because they needed another bass. He will performing in the Holiday Show at CCM. The dates are December 2 and 3, with two shows each day- 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Brittany Taylor '16
is
a biology major in the premed track with an English minor at Loyola University Chicago. She has been involved in a research study at Cincinnati Children's Hospital called Fibromyalgia Integrative Training (or FIT Teens). Currently her science-related involvements are LUC Mentors, American Medical Student Association (AMSA), and Chicago Brigades. She will be going on a medical mission trip to Ghana in January 2018.
